Android :: Catch Handler - Invoke HTTPGet In HTTPClient Object
Oct 20, 2010
I have recently hit a snag using the Android plugin to Eclipse. For some reason, ALL of my errors being thrown don't initialize and show me the error. Has anyone ever seen this issue before and if so, what did you do to correct it? In particular, I am seeing it when I try to invoke the HTTPGet in a HTTPClient object. If I have no connectivity, then I should get an error. The Catch block does fire when this occurs...however, when I check my general Exception object, the object is NULL (NULL Pointer). Why would this happen if the catch is grabbing the exception?
My exceptions used to be working and I was able to see the stack trace. However, I can no longer see any stack trace regardless of the Exception class I am using. Can someone please help me understand what the heck is wrong with Eclipse, Android, or both? Is there something I am missing on the configuration side?...is this a bug? Mind you, I have already used Stack Overflow for this question. It has been viewed 40 times but no answer yet.

I'm trying to call a web server that is using relative URL redirects for some of the calls. This of course isn't working with DefaultHttpClient as it isn't treating it as a relative URL. I've gotten as far as implementing a RedirectHandler in an attempt to catch the redirect and add in the base call but I can't work out how to get the location of the redirect.
With the following method how do I go about finding out where I am being redirected to? I can't find any fields on either response or context that have what I need and I don't know where else to look.
public URI getLocationURI(HttpResponse response, HttpContext context)

I have a custom view that draws to a canvas. I am trying to invoke changes to the canvas when the user pushes a button from the activity that this view is tied to. Currently, I am attempting to do this by calling a public method, called setNewDrawable, that I created inside the view.
The debugger is giving me different values for the view ID depending on whether I'm inside setNewDrawable or inside the Overridden onDraw method when I post an Invalidate.
For example the debugger variables show: (This - MyView id=830067720176) or (This - MyView id=830067712344) in setNewDrawable and onDraw respectively. This makes me think I basically have two copies of the object and I am essentially interacting with the wrong one.
How can I get information to my custom View in order to determine what it draws?
Here is the code I am running...

I have an "open" animation and am using Handler.postDelayed(Runnable, delay) to trigger a "close" animation after a short delay. However, during the time between open and close, there is possibly another animation triggered by a click...my question is, how would I cancel the "close" animation in the handler?

Android: 2.1 SDK
I have a hello.php running on standard Linux host. (Ubuntu 9.01 with Apache2 web server)
In android I have a simple activity which sends HttpPost or HttpGet to the above hello.php with some parameters in URL. Irrespective of HttpPost or HttpGet in my php always $_GET has values, $_POST is always empty.
How do I know in PHP if it was a post , get,put or a delete? $_REQUEST['REQUEST_METHOD'] is also always empty in my php.

I am writing an android application which uses a REST-based API on the server. So far the login works perfectly using HttpGet = I send the credentials, it sends me back a JSON response object containing session id or failure. I then moved onto using another get api (this one is passed the sessionid) and the response I get back looks like a valid one "200 - Ok" but the response body contains nothing - 0 text.
If I take the same URL and drop it into a browser, I get all the JSON text I expect displayed in the browser window. So what is the difference between a browser request/response and that of HttpGet? Any clues as to why my HttpGet might return a 'valid' nothing?

After clicking the button in ther first Activity, the second one will be shown with new content base on what we enter in the first Activity.) Instrumentation provides us the function called startActivitySync() and return the Activity object for processing. I am trying to get a FileInputStream object on an image that the user selects from the picture gallery.
This is the android URI returned by android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.INTERNAL_CONTENT_URI content://media/external/images/media/3
When I try to construct a java URI object from this object, I get an IllegalArgumentException with the exception description Expected file scheme in URI: content://media/external/images/media/3 whereas the android URI shows the scheme as content
Never found a solution for the original question. But if you want the byte stream of an image in the pictures gallery, this piece of code will do that.

I am developing an Android app for a website. I'm trying to get some information from the website by sending a cookie using a HttpGet request. I don't know where I am going wrong with the request. I am using AsyncTask to send the request to the server. The request also uses a token which I receive when I login to the webpage. All this is clear in the code below. This is part of the process in the doInBackground() function of the Asynctask:
BufferedReader in = null;
JSONObject token = Login.getToken(); // Token received after login, used in the cookie
try {
r = token.get("session_token").toString();
} catch (JSONException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
[code]...

Sorry if this sounds like a really stupid question, but I'm really struggling to understand the Search Manager documentation. How do I actually invoke a search from the hardware search button in my application? I've added the relevant code to the Manifest file, but pushing the button has absolutely no effect. The API is very unclear - is this something that should be handled automatically from the Activity class, or have I got to override something? Have I got to include a hardware key listener?

I'm trying to make an app where a button will invoke a web service's API call (it'll be my own web service; the call/functionality is not relevant). I know how to make a new listener that invokes an activity, but that is insufficient here since I'll still need to make a call out to a web service through it. What is it I'm doing here? Is this a service that I'm looking at? content provider that I'll be invoking that somehow gets data from a web service?

I need to invoke skype application and make a call from skype when a 'skype me' link (eg: skype://1866012345) is clicked from a webview. Can someone help how to do this?
I tried the following:
Downloaded skype application from market (in my driod 2.2).
When launching skype, the package invoked is 'skype.android.raider' - as per ADB logs.
So I tried invoking a ACTION_VIEW intent with cmp=com.skype.raider/.ui.call.SplashScreenActivity or cmp=com.skype.raider/.ui.call.SkypeOutCallActivity
and data=Uri.parse("skype://1866012345"). These did not work.
(I also did find a few posts suggesting to use skypelite component, but I guess I should ve skype lite installed for that, which could not find in the market. I assume skype lite is not in market anymore.)
(Also, i have to be able to make a phone call or email when corresponding links are clicked from WebView. As of now, I have added custom handling for each of these, but wondering if webview by default would not support it. Is there any webview setting to be enabled t do this? Any idea??)

I haven't used the Java HttpClient before and the documentation is confusing. Say I want to send a POST to the URL "https://domain/foo/ bar". I'm accessing a server with an XML API that defines the message to send like this:
code:.........
And the response to expect like this:
code:..........
Now, I can build and parse the portion inside the serverapi tags but I'm not sure how the HttpClient handles the header. If I use the standard code like this:
code:...........
In the area shown as "not sure", should I pre-pend the entire header in front of the xml section, just as it's shown in the server API document or does the client take care of the first line, since it knows the URL?
Is there a way to see exactly what is about to be sent right before I call HttpClient.execute?
As for parsing the response, I believe I can just do this:
code:..........
Or do I need to strip anything off the response content before I start parsing the xml? I took a few stabs at this and it looks like there's some HTTP bookkeeping information at the start of the response content.

I build a website for phones like android and iphone,when users click an url , is it possible for me to invoke some system build in activities like Dialer or SMS)?I want to implement this cause I hope when user click the link with phone number,user can start to call directly. it will open the market app and lead me to the app I search. so I think if we format the url in some way ,maybe it can also open the Dialer app in Android.I know it must be another case when it comes to Iphone,but currently,it is fine enough it works with Android,any one ,any idea ?
