Android :: Can I Hooks And Trap Events That Will Occur In Android Process?
Jul 29, 2010
it's possible to hook process in Android? for example we can hook process in windows:"trap events that will occur, either in your own process or in other processes. By "hooking", you tell Windows about a function, filter function also called hook procedure, that will be called everytime an event you're interested in occurs"

I am now learning how android handles linux input events from kernel raw input events to the userland level KeyEvent and so on. And I want to handle input events in native language. I've do some experiments on handling events using NDK but the touch screen events are very hard to handle(when I touch the screen, It generates a lot of kernel events).
I've read the eventhub class in framework base dir in the android source repo. And I now I know how android collects linux kernel raw events using eventhub class by reading from /dev/input/event* , but I still have no idea how it translates these raw events into the userland logic input events like KeyEvent. The file keyinput service only wrappers eventhub to JNI functions but there are no translation. So please give me some hints on the kernel event and userland event translation process.

Are there any accessibility hooks into the system which will let me build an application that can monitor for system wide GUI events, such as application windows being activated/focused, keys being pressed on a particular widget, mouse clicks on buttons?I'm looking for behavior similar to that provided by java accessibility utilities (http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/ accessibility/docs/jaccess-1.3/doc/api/com/sun/java/accessibility/util/ package-summary.html)

I am playing with "android.speech.action.RECOGNIZE_SPEECH" and in the source it says to trap for ActivityNotFoundException. However, I am not sure how I can do this, the activity class doesn't support this event. I found it as part of android.content, but am not sure how to implement it. Multiple inheritance?

I've got a tab host activity started from a home screen shortcut. When my application starts it downloads information from a server using an AsyncTask. In the onPostExecute method of the AsyncTask I call setContentView to display the TabHost.When I start the homescreen shortcut by tapping on the shortcut using my finger everything works as expected, I download the information from the server and display the TabHost with the information in the tabs. However starting the application by navigating to the shortcut with the mouse wheel and then clicking on the shortcut with the mouse wheel leads to a trap in the framework code as soon as my application starts. This looks like a simple fix since mCurrentView is null at the time that this method is called - can this issue be addressed? Does anyone know of any workarounds?

I wanna add three layout in a TabActivity, but it was force closed when I ran it.
Here is the code:
import android.app.TabActivity;
import android.content.res.Resources;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.TabHost;
public class Test1 extends TabActivity {
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
Resources res = getResources();
TabHost tabHost = getTabHost();
tabHost.addTab(tabHost.newTabSpec("egcquery").setIndicator("EGCQuery").setContent(R.layout.main1));
tabHost.addTab(tabHost.newTabSpec("PatientInfo").setIndicator("PatientInfo").setContent(R.layout.main2));
tabHost.addTab(tabHost.newTabSpec("Comp_Interp").setIndicator("Comp_Interp").setContent(R.layout.main3));}

There are a lot of Android SDK APIs where callback handlers are registered. For a concrete example, with MediaPlayer you can set an onCompletionListener callback. Will these callbacks be called from the main (UI) thread? If the answer is "it depends", then I'm looking for some general rules for what callbacks will be called from the main thread versus another thread. The SDK documentation doesn't seem to spell it out. (Maybe I missed it) It seems important to know, because if I'm guaranteed main thread callbacks, then I can skip some thread synchronization on data shared between different places in code. If I'm forced to be pessimistic out of ignorance, then I have to write extra synch block code and worry about deadlocks, data integrity, and reduced performance.

I am having an interesting problem and would appreciate any advice. My app uses WebView as its primary view. Using a javascript hook, it can launch the camera so the user can take a picture. The camera is launched using: Intent i = new Intent(android.provider.MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE);
When the camera starts, it makes sense to use landscape mode, so the user naturally turns the phone on its side. After the user takes a picture, control returns to my launching Activity (actually, my Acitivity gets restarted because it usually gets destroyed to free up memory for the camera on my Moto Droid). When my WebView gets recreated, I restore its state from the Bundle I saved in onSaveInstanceState().
Now everything looks ok, except the phone is still in landscape mode. However, when the user turns the phone upright bringing back into portrait mode, my WebView takes up only half of the screen. Somewhere along the way, the scale of my WebView got lost. This seems like such a minor issue, but it is driving me crazy.
Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening? What is the correct way to preserve the scale of my WebView? I am hesitant to hard code any scale factors because what looks good on my device may not be the same for another.

In my android app, I'm setting an alarm that I want to occur repeatedly, hence using AlarmManager.setRepeating().
I don't want to keep track of whether the alarm is set myself (sounds like a bad idea that's prone to fail at some point), and there seems to be no API support for checking whether a particular alarm is already set for a given Intent.
Hence, I am pessimistically resetting the alarm each time my app activates:
alarmManager.cancel(pendingIntent);
...
alarmManager.setRepeating(..., pendingIntent);
Question: is calling setRepeating() idempotent i.e. do I need to explicitly cancel() any prior alarm or can I safely just call setRepeating() and be done with it?

After following some instructions on Diego Torres blog I am able to test my classes using the regular Eclipse JUnit test-runner, however I also want to be able to run my unit tests from within the emulated android environment. For now this should make no real difference since the classes I am working on do very basic numerical or networking tasks, but obviously anything which involves the UI or Android API specific functions can only ever be tested on the emulator.
I set up a new run configuration of type AndroidJUnitTest wich uses the ndroid.test.InstrumentationTestRunner, however whenever I fire up the test I get the following error in the console:
[2010-01-09 00:45:23 - Pal1]Uploading Pal1.apk onto device 'emulator-5556'....................

I am using Android SDK 1.5. I am developing an activity with multiple content views. It will call setContentView() with different viewgroup instance for different functionality. It contains a text input dialog popped up by an option menu item. I didn't specify anything for IME in mainfest.xml & EditText attributes. I found at first, the soft keyboard for the text input dialog will overlap on the activity content view. But after several content view switch (by calling setContentView() with different ViewGroup instance), the soft keyboard will resize the activity content view. Why this inconsistent behavior happens?

At a certain point in my program, when I'm completely done with my service, my activity executes unbindService() and stopService() -- yet the process persists. I can tell that it persists because I run "ps" in "adb -e shell":
CODE:.............
"adb logcat", I can show you the sequence of events:
ACTIVITY: context.unbindService(serviceConnection);
SERVICE: onUnbind();
ACTIVITY: stopService(serviceIntent); & returns true!
SERVICE: onDestroy();
First, my activity calls unbindService(serviceConnection). According to the documentation, unbindService() will "Disconnect from an application service. You will no longer receive calls as the service is restarted, and the service is now allowed to stop at any time." So that is fine, and it is happening.
Appropriately, we see the onUnbind() call happen on the service side. According to the documentation, onUnbind() is called when "all clients have disconnected from a particular interface published by the service." So this confirms the correct service connection is being passed, and that the service is responding accordingly.
Next, my activity calls stopService(serviceIntent), and returns true. According to the documentation, stopService() does the following: "If there is a service matching the given Intent that is already running, then it is stopped and true is returned; else false is returned." Again, this is happening and returning true.
In response, the service's onDestroy() method is called. According to the documentation, onDestroy() is "Called by the system to notify a Service that it is no longer used and is being removed. The service should clean up any resources it holds (threads, registered receivers, etc) at this point. Upon return, there will be no more calls in to this Service object and it is effectively dead."
At this point I expect the process to disappear from the process table. Yet it remains indefinitely. But why?
Also, the process is so persistent that I can bind to it again, and I see that it is the same exact process responding because the PID (process ID) is the same!

So, I decided to give Tridents ROM a try about 10-minutes ago.
I used ROM Manager, backed-up my old ROM, then downloaded Velocity 0.2.
Now, my phone will do nothing, it turns on and shows the red Droid eye, then when it's time to go to the home screen I get pop-up after pop-up saying that "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I have no way of getting on my phone at all, what can I do?

Don't know if there is a connection, but when I need to update an app, I get the message something like "process android media process stopped unexpectedly" and it will not allow the update. Everything else works well. I have turned it off for awhile, and have done a battery pull.

Is there a way to craft a daemon process as to make it "unlistable" to a process viewer?
OR
is there a way to dynamically change a process name?
I'd like to design a security application without having to modify the firmware, if possible (yes I know about "security through obscurity"...).

So since I got the phone on Thursday, at random, I'll get these popup crash messages, that say "The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly" it has a "Force Close" button, which doesn't seem to change anything other than to acknowlege the message.It will happen at random, sometimes while I'm on the home screen, or sending a text message, but more recently, as I was trying to manage & link contacts. When I searched for this message it seemed to be related to people using Gmail, but I always get this message when I'm doing other things and not even touching my Gmail account.

I've searched around the forums (here and SDX forums) and although it seems the few people that had this issue were able to solve it, my case seems a bit different.
It's different because of the people I've read solving the issue, it was a problem with something they changed / removed with gmail / gmail storage or talk / talk storage. And when they cleared the cache or re-installed the problem went away. Also, it seemed that the same people had a problem with downloading from the market...
Neither of the above apply to me, but yet I'm still getting this FC error all the time!
I was helping a friend with their CL14 Moment out of the box...and went from stock 1.5 CL14 to 2.1 DD03 w/Joey recovery to EclairDD10 and v5 root. I then did the streaming media fix, and then the private app (build.prop) fix (all previously done with my phone no problems). I did all of these update right in a row, and after my last re-boot the FC error (process com.google.process.gapps has stoped unexpectedly) started showing up and won't go away.
The only .apk / odex files I removed were the preloaded Sprint apps
Does anybody have any other ideas on how I can get this FC error to stop? I've tried clearing the cache / data for all the mail / talk apps, rebooted, cleared dalvik cache...

Not the corp calendar, the regular one. I have a band I go listen to, and I want to enter their schedule in my calendar. Generally the same times and locations, so it would be cool if I could just copy an event to a new date and use all the stuff I already entered. Or make changes to any detail if I need to. This would also be useful for irregular meetings of any type. It is NOT a recurring event.

I'm just getting up to speed in Android, and today in a project meeting someone said that Android has no native calendar app so users just use whatever calendar app they like.
Is this true, and if so how do I programmatically add an event to the user's calendar? Is there a common API they all share?
