Android :: Application - Service With One Database / Prevent Locks?
Jun 8, 2010
I have android application and service that runs in separate process. Application and service read and write to same database (and same table).
What is the best way to work with database? How to prevent locks?

I use a sqlite database in my project. The stored data in it must not be available for the user to edit. As I've read here I saw that if you have root access you can alter sqlite database. The only solution would be to encrypt database content, but this would be time consuming for device. Any solution to prevent access to database ?

I have few queries on Android SQLiteDatabase
1.) As normally the database stored in internal memory, can we specify the path of external storage and use it in similar way ?
2.) How to determine the size of available space of database ? I used getMaximumSize() from SQLIteDatabase class but that gives me 1099511626752
Is this in bytes ? If assumed then this seems to be too large and not practical. I am using HTC G1 to test this.
3.) How can I determine the size of an entry in table ? Or do I have to pull the whole table and manually see its size. Is it same that would be in phone storage ?
4.) Can I check if any free space available before making entry in database ? I want to prevent SQLiteFullException.

From what I can tell -- if you return START_NOT_STICKY from Service.onStartCommand(...), the system should not restart a service if it crashes. However, I'm not seeing that behavior -- any ideas on what could be restarting the service?

It is very important that my service stay running until someone with a password stops the service from my UI screen. My app runs great but it is designed to be turned on/off by parents (with a password) on their kids phones. I have managed to make everything work but the problem I'm having is that if the kid uses a task manager to kill my service then my app is useless. I would be grateful to anyone who knows a way to either
1) monitor the service and start it back up automatically if its "killed"
or
2) prevent someone from being able to kill it except from the activity (administration screen) that launched the service. Or both?

Every time i lock the screen the SIM locks as well, meaning I have to enter the SIM pin code every time I unlock the phone! Also no one can call me since the SIM is locked. Anyone else got this problem? This happened once in a while on 1.6 but since my update to 2.1 this morning it happens every time.

I'm watching the 2010 Google I/O video on this topic and I have a few questions to make sure I understand properly. Google I/O 2010 - Android REST client applications Please note I also have a very limited understanding of CursorAdapters Right now my application just has a UI layer. I've created an object called DbAdapter using some Google tutorials to create a small database and a table in that database. I've created a class I'm calling DataBroker (extending ContentProvider) to manage retrieving data from the database and calling web services to update data. Scenarios:
1) Suppose I want to display a list of items in my ListActivity. Am I correct in assuming I will write a function in my DataBroker that creates a Cursor to the table in my database that holds those items, fire up a service which launches a thread which calls a web service to get additional items, then return the Cursor to my UI thread? Doing this would likely return the Cursor to my UI thread before the web service finished, but, I'm assuming, once the CursorAdapter has a Cursor, it will automatically show any changes made to that database table, yes?
2) Now I have a list of items in my ListView. Suppose I give the user some functionality to delete an item. The user executes this functionality. It should call a function in my DataBroker which updates the row in my database corresponding to that item, setting the status column to STATE_DELETING (which will remove the row from the ListView because the Cursor has a clause excluding this state), then fire off a service that fires a thread that hits my web service, then deletes the row in the database when finished? Also, suppose I have multiple Activities, am I looking at having a static Cursor for each Activity with a list, grabbing that Cursor in the Activity's onCreate, and if that Cursor is null, hitting my DataBroker?

When I create a instance of the SQLiteOpenHelper, I always need a "Context" to be passed as its constructor's argument. To use this "Context", in my service layer class, I extends Activity class, though I do not display this activity on the screen because it is my service layer. I always get NullPointer exception when I open the SQLiteOpenHelper in my service layer class, Is it because my service layer class extends the Activity class but I did not show this activity on mobile screen? (That's there is no intent to my service layer class), if it is so, how to get rid of it if I wanna open a SQLiteOpenHelper in my service layer class which do not need to extends Activity, but need a Context object to pass to SQLiteOpenHelper?

I have created a multithreaded application but it still hangs if the server is unavailable.causes some delay and I believe this is the cause for hanging. But if the TCPClientService Service is executing in its own thread I don't know why this affects the timeout of the main activity.I would be very thankful if anyone could show how to prevent the application from hanging when the server is unavailable.

I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it).I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to.Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with. Please note, this question is specific to Android Marketplace Applications - the difference being, application delivery is out of my hands and I have no way of linking between a legitimate purchase and an illegal download.

i have a android application which is ready to release .so to release i have put the app in android market .the user can buy the app and can install the app into the phone.android market wont provide any apk file to the user .so normally we need not bother about re distribution of of the app to the unauthorized persons(who didn't buy the app). But what my problem is ,I heard that there is a jail breaking concept which can allow the hacker to get the apk file(installation file) from the device .(even though android market not giving the apk file to the user ).then he can distribute the apk file to all(to unauthorized persons ).how to avoid it.is there any thing to restrict the unauthorized person in using our app, even though he get the apk file . does android market provides the details of the users who has buy the app by paying?

I'm using Google Code to host my application code, its convenient and the SVN repository means I don't have to worry about backups. When you create a project on there you need to select a license, I chose GNU GPL v3. By doing so, does that prevent me from selling my application on the Android market place?

I have started creating database for my application. It is working well. The data is also getting stored. But the issue is that i require dropping table, that already exists, every time i run the application.
But one thing i found is that whenever i change the version of the database in my code, the table gets dropped. But i would like to know whether it is possible to drop table without changing the version number of the database.

Is there a particular flag that we can use to prevent apps showing up in marketplace which require the phone to have a camera flash /LED? Typical apps are ones which make the phone act like a torchlight in dark. I have seen a tag which prevents apps requiring auto focus in a camera from appearing in the marketplace. Just looking to find out if there is something similar for camera flash.
