Android :: How To Use Http Connections Like TCP Socket In Java

Mar 9, 2010

may be asking a bit much here but I have faith in the community so it's worth trying. I'm making a game and I'm trying to pick the connection type to use for communicating between a Java mobile client and a Java server backend.Socket programing in Java is easy - there's a lovely tutorial on the subject and two way communication is trivial.Trouble is that on a mobile client (Android) it's not guaranteed that the cellular network will let you make TCP connections. That makes me think using an HTTP connection is the way to go. HTTP connections are request based but I need a way to push notifications from the server to the client. It seems the solution to this problem is to use 'long polling' I have read a bit about it but have yet to see a simple example for what I'm trying to achieve.Again I might be asking a lot but this seems like a fairly common problem, is there a library or framework I can import / use to wrap a Http connection and provide a two way long standing connection (That reconnects automatically etc). I read a bit about cometD but it doesn't seem to have a Java library that I can just pick up.The communication I need is not heavy, not constant two way streams of data just occasional updates either way to keep the game going.

General :: How To Increase Concurrent HTTP Connections

Mar 3, 2013

My company is importing some Android-based TV boxes from China, and we're experiencing a strange bug with some apps we are developing to run on them. I'm trying to find a specific solution that I can tell them to implement in a firmware upgrade, but I am not sure where to look.

In some apps (especially Adobe AIR-based ones), there seems to be a limit to concurrent HTTP requests to a web server. On an earlier ICS 4.0.4 firmware for these devices, this did not cause any problems. But they recently released a JB 4.1.1 firmware, and this problem occurs.

Let's say an app requests 20 items by HTTP from a web server (XML files, PNG or JPG images). What will happen is about 2/3 of these will be sent back, and the rest just remains blank, as if in a perpetual waiting status.

Looking at the web server's logs, there is no requests at all for these missing items.

And, it's totally random. If you re-launch the app, the missing items will be different ones.

So, I am guessing the app can only request so many things at the same time. Any system property that could be adjusted to solve this?

BTW I am unable to replicate this bug on any other device. The TV boxes in question are based on Rockchip 3066 SoC's

Android :: How To Develop A Soft Keyboard - HTTP Connections To Synchronize Keyboard Data With A Cloud DB And Other Phones

Aug 13, 2010

I would like to play around with some ideas and develop a soft keyboard for Android to replace the default one.

Is there any general information about soft keyboard development for Android out there?

Any best practices or guidelines?

Can I do with my keyboard application pretty much anything I could do with a normal Android application?
Can I do HTTP connections to synchronize keyboard data with a cloud DB and other phones I have?
Can I open other windows/screens from a key press, e.g. to display a custom input interface different to a normal QWERTY one. If that doesn't work, can I use a pop-up dialog instead?

Android :: Can't Do A HTTP Post To A Web Service From My App

Sep 8, 2010

I've been working on an app that uses both GET and POST requests to Web Services. The GET requests are no problems but the POST requests are killing me. I've tried 2 different scenarios in the code. The first looks like this...

CODE:......

This code gets this result for me..."Bad Request (Invalid Header Name)"

Now here's my second piece of code...

CODE:.....

This gives me an entirely different result. It's a long garbled mess of xml and SOAP that does have a SOAP Exception mentioned in it..."Server was unable to process request. --- System.Xml.XmlException: Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1." Now, can anyone shed any light on what I am doing wrong.

Android :: Remote Service Returning Value From Http Transaction

May 6, 2009

I've been researching how to best implement a service which performs a network transaction and returns data to the caller.

Clearly, this needs to happen on its own thread which means some form of async response. I can see at least three ways of doing this--some more complex than others. In the descriptions below, C is the caller, S is the service.

1) C wraps a Handler in a Messenger object, adds this to an Intent. C then calls startService with this intent. S extends IntentService which runs the Intents received in a worker thread. S then sends a message to C via the Messenger. This has the benefit of not requiring any of the async binding process or making an IDL interface that needs to be compiled into C. This seems to be the closes to a Handler-based response mechanism of Local Services.

2) C binds to S and then uses AsyncTask<> to make a blocking call to S. S performs the network transaction and returns the data in the return value or an out parameter. This requires the async binding process, but does not require a callback function since the inter- thread communications is handled by AsyncTask<> and the worker thread is in C's context.

3) Make the function called in S be completely asynchronous. S defines two interfaces: IMyService and IMyServiceCallback. S implements IMyService.Stub. C implements IMyServiceCallback.Stub. C binds to S then calls S via IMyService, passing its IMyServiceCallback binder. S spins up a worker thread and returns immediately. S then calls the callback when it has completed the network transaction.

I am asking for advice on which methods are most appropriate. I do not need the the service running constantly, only when the web transaction is required. C does not use S all the time--definitely don't want to bind during C's onCreate. However, I would like the time from when C determines it needs to use S to getting the results back to be as quick as possible (i.e. adding minimal latency to the already latent network access).

Is there any preference to having the worker thread in C or in S? Are there any significant problems with option 1?

Android :: Saving CookieStore In Http Client Service

Feb 9, 2010

I have a Service for my Android app that performs HTTP calls. The Service stores cookies in a CookieStore. I am trying to find a way to persist the CookieStore but I haven't been successful. I don't want the user to log in every time to receive a new CookieStore.

I tried to use SharedPreferences to store the CookieStore as a string, but I can't re-construct the CookieStore with a String.

Has anyone else had success in persisting a CookieStore?

Android :: Service Unable To Call Java Class Methods / Way To Fix?

Jun 22, 2010

Hi, custom classes which are part of a framework, so nothing graphical. One of those (singleton) classes is a Logging class which send logs to my server. I noticed that even though I can call the classes methods in my service it actually won't be logging anything... In my specific example it's osmething like : Logger.getInstance().log("Whatever I want to Log"); Obviously the getInstance is a static method so it can be accessed from anywhere within my project right away.. I was wondering though why this method for example isn't getting called ? Also how do I debug a Service ? Btw I am using of IPC from one of my Activities which gets bound to the service and can start/stop the music for example...

Android :: Unable To Get Data From Activity To Service / How Intents Could Pass That?

Nov 24, 2010

I am pretty new to this but I was told I could get good help here. A friend and myself are playing around with creating Android apps (using ADT)

Here is how we are trying to make the program: in activity, user sets threshold values for the X and Y axis on accelerometer. When user hits button "Start", startService is invoked and starts TiltService.

TiltService is designed to run in the background always on the phone without user interaction. TiltService constantly compares the threshold with the accelerometer values and will vibrate if they are off.

My problem is I can't seem to get the putExtra() data correctly. I have overridden the onStartCommand in my service but I get the message "unreachable code" when I save the getExtras() to a bundle.

Here is the relevant code (I can post the whole thing, just do not want to clog up page) code...

I thought I understood the basic of how Intents could pass data, but I guess I don't. Is it obvious what I am missing?

Android : Unable To Start Service Intent Error In Client-Server Project / Fix It?

Feb 12, 2009

I am getting the below error when ever i am trying to call the bind service. 02-12 20:17:25.486: WARN/ActivityManager(58): Unable to start service Intent { action=oem.android.proj2.IRemoteService }: not found

I have created the Client-Server application. At the Server site i have used the AIDL to impliment the interfaces in my Service class. At Client site i have exposed the AIDL interfaces and have one Activity that mainly do the IPC mechanism , i mean ServiceConnection, bindService and then call the Serivce of the Client site. But i am getting the error i mentioned during the bindService call.

Could you please let me know the steps mainly i have to follow to run the Client -Server Application. For time being i am running the Client .apk first and then the Server .apk, but the server one giving me error.

It would be great if you could let me know what all permission short of thing to take care, as my Client and Server code are placed at different APks, so do i need to import the Client project in my Server Project, if yes then how to impliment that.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Unable To Use Phone - No Service After Error Message

Nov 6, 2009

I thought this phone was going to be great, especially coming from 4 instincts (btw, the last one was working just fine, finally) I was just getting tired of it and really like the options the Hero offered and when working, it's great. I am getting this error message:
Sorry! The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

It is not allowing me to use the phone at all, it says no service. Even the sprint website has my phone greyed out as if it don't exist. Now if I do a hard reset, everything comes back on, but I lose everything. This is my second Hero and I am hoping that there is a fix. I went to HTC email support site to try and get a solution and it is down, getting really frustrated with this phone. I downloaded apps from the market and transfered music to the sd card.

As soon as a contestant clicks his/her button, the quiz master's app will flash the name of that contestant. Is it even possible to have multiple connections and accept concurrent (or multiplexed) messages from them in bluetooth (something similar to select() in unix/c)?If possible, where should I look for any examples?
