Android :: Android Out Of Memory Error - Loading JSON File

The app I am working on needs to read a JSON file that may be anywhere from 1.5 to 3 MB in size. It seems to have no problem opening the file and converting the data to a string, but when it attempts to convert the string to a JSONArray, OutOfMemoryErrors are thrown. The exceptions look something like this:
E/dalvikvm-heap( 5307): Out of memory on a 280-byte allocation.
W/dalvikvm( 5307): Exception thrown (Ljava/lang/OutOfMemoryError;
) while throwing internal exception (Ljava/lang/OutOfMemoryError;)
One strange thing about this is that the crash only occurs every 2nd or 3rd time the app is run, leaving me to believe that the memory consumed by the app is not being garbage collected each time the app closes. I'm not quite sure what the best approach is for such a task.

I use this method couples of occasion to load text file to display as help file. But I don't know why the following code didn't work. It seems to hang and logcat says "OutOfMemoryError"? All I did was break this out as an separate activity.

Noticed in Android 4.4, Google removed one of internal functions in class, DexFile:
native private static int openDexFile(byte[] fileContents);
which is capable of performing loading dex from byte-array without going through reading the dex file on disk, which has proven to be very useful

I am trying to login in a website via HTTP post and then via HTTP get download a json file (.do file with json content). This json file url contains a group of parameters that I already sent on the url. Although, I can successfully login I cannot access the content from the json file - I'm downloading the html code of the site - i have already tried for an image or a css and it works.The code goes like this:

I'm trying to make a bundle for Felix on Android which may take photos regularly.
All the code compiles well and it can be resolved by Felix, but when I try to start it, I get an exception (java.lang.VerifyError) and this trace in logcat :

The CameraHandler class opens a Camera object, and implements PictureCallback and AutoFocusCallback.
The .jar file has been 'dexed', via a simple 'dx --dex --output=classes.dex ... && aapt add ... classes.dex'.
I don't know why this error raise, so if someone has a solution...

I have some xml files with a custom format (based on the scxml specifications) that I want my program to read. I've already written the code to read it, but I'm running into problems actually reading the file itself. I want the file to be compiled with the apk, as it will not be changed at all during run time. So I put the file (test.xml) in the res/xml/ folder, and got the inputstream by using:
getResources().openRawResource(R.xml.test);
But when I read in this inputstream it is complete jibberish, which makes me suspect it is being read in binary, as openRawResource() is often used for binary files like images, if I am correct. What is the correct way to do this?

I've seen a few places where this was asked but I haven't seen where it's been resolved. I've just installed the tools needed to develop Android applications. This includes, of course, Eclipse. When I try to open the res/main.xml file, I get the error 'could not initialize class java.awt.font'.I'm running the newest version of Eclipse and all the software required for Android development. I'm running on Ubuntu 10.04 32bit. Sun JDK and JRE are installed.

I'd love to get some ideas on best practices for testing our Android software, especially for AT&T devices. We're using a Samsung Captivate, on AT&T. As you know, AT&T disables sideloading (no Unknowns Sources option in Settings->Applications). We need to have our QA team load our apk file onto these devices as part of our testing and validation process. We're willing to install the SDK if needed, and upload the apk file via USB. We are not willing to root the phone.

neither mWebView.loadUrl("file:///raw/about");
or

works.

I'm dealing with a problem you guys might not have faced earlier. I'm having a use-case in my Android application where the actual screen that I want to show to user is not stored in any layout file of my application. The layout of the of the screen is designed by server in this case, based on selection made by user on first screen.
Let me elaborate here,
1st Screen : List of check box with different biller names. (Imagine I've selected 2 billers from this screen)
2nd Screen : (The screen that server has decided how it should look like)
* Header,
* 1st Biller name (Label)
* Amount for 1st Biller TextBox
* Image (a Separator image)
* 2st Biller name (Label)
* Amount for 2st Biller TextBox.
* Here there can be a checbox/radio/another TextBox anything.
* Image (a Separator image)
* Button (to submit above form back to server)
I hope makes some sense in what I'm planning to design. The current issues I'm dealing with are as below.
1). How to draw this dynamic widgets?
2). How to fetch user Inputs from this dynamically created widgets?

when I load external web page, image or javascript file from local webpage. I can't see external image and can't load javascript or webpage. But I can only see local image. I think I have a pretty easy problem to solve, but I have been beating my head against the wall for hours trying to get past it! I have an adapter that loads a list of URLS:
adapter=new MyAdapter(this, lStrings);
list.setAdapter(adapter);
The list of URLS looks like this:

What I want instead is to load these values from a text file that lies on the SD card. For that matter, I would be okay with loading the values from a text file into a String, and then load the String into the list as I imagine that would be the "cleaner approach". However, all attempts to do this have failed. For instance, I replaced the above snippet with this:

{ MainActivity.this.getString(R.string.myurllist) };
but then I get a Forced Close on loading.
I'm a bit new to Java, Android, and development in general.

In different kind of classes...some my app, some general java.. Does this always mean there is a problem in my app, or can it also be the phone ran out of memory due to a other process? In my application I change layouts very frequently with most of the user interactions. Each time when a new layout is drawn, the applications memory size is increasing. I can see this in DDMS. This is absolutely fine. I have analyzed my application with memory analyze tool and it shows that there around 42 Table layouts at some point of time and this number increase as user does more interactions with the app. Now my question is why doesn't the GC collect the stale layout objects. Does GC collect on UI widgets also??? I feel it does but can any one tell me what may be the reason for GC not collecting my UI elements.

I have a couple of worker threads in my app which I stop and restart during onPause() and onResume(). I use a method that clears all the reference to and from the threads when stopping. However ThreadGroup is still retaining a reference to my threads and causing a small memory leak. After pausing and resuming my app about 40 to 50 times I will then get OutOfMemory Errors when loading bitmaps. Allthough this doesn't effect most of my users I do get occasional reports of crashes. How can I remove the references to my threads from ThreadGroup so that GC can do it's job.

I'm writing an application which connects to a back office site. The backoffice site contains a whole slew of JavaScript functions, at least 100 times the average site. Unfortunately it does not load them, and causes much of the functionality to not work properly. So I am running a test. I put a page out on my server which loads the FireBugLite javascript text. Its a lot of javascript and perfect to test and see if the Android WebView will load it. The WebView loads nothing, but the browser loads the Firebug Icon. What on earth would make the difference, why can it run in the browser and not in my WebView? Any suggestions.
More background information, in order to get the stinking backoffice application available on a Droid (or any other platform except windows) I needed to trick the bakcoffice application to believe what's accessing the website is Internet Explorer. I do this by modifying the WebView User Agent.Also for this application I've slimmed my landing page, so I could give you the source to offer me aid. package ksc.myKMB;
