Android :: Accessing Raw Resource Files With Filename As String
Mar 7, 2009
Is there a way to access a raw resource file by having its filename in a String? According Google's documentation, I need to use "Resources.openRawResource (R.raw.myDataFile)". This requires that I have the file name at compile time, but what if I have 20 or so files and want to do something to a specific file by passing its file name at runtime?

I have preferences where you can enable/disable what items will show up on the menu. There are 17 items. I made a string array in values/arrays.xml with titles for each of these 17 items.
I have preferences.xml which has the layout for my preferences file, and I would like to reference a single item from the string array to use as the title.
In the Android developer reference, I see how I can reference a single string with XML, but now how I can reference a string from an array resource in XML.

I know I can put escaped HTML tags in string resources. However, looking at the source code for the Contacts application I can see that they have a way of not having to encode the HTML.Unfortunately, when I try something similar (like Hello, World!), getString() returns the string without the tags (I can see that in logcat). Why is that? How can I get the original string, with tags and everything? How is the Contacts application doing it?

New problem *sigh* getting to be quite annoyed with HTC/Android. Gone from excitement to frustration.I have Google apps for my domain with a custom email matt@mydomain.com (example)I use Exchange ActiveSync to access my emails, calendar and contacts on my phone.I have been having the same frustrations of others when things stop syncing but this is usually fixed by either putitng in a wrong password and then the right one or by removing the Exchange ActiveSync account and then readding it. Unfortunately this how now ceased to work. Yesterday afternoon my phone stopped syncing email and showed the little circle with arrows icon with an exclamation next to it. I left it overnight thinking it might have been a Google glitch or something rather than the phone but its still not working now getting close to 24 hours later.I have tried putting a wrong password and the the correct one and it still fails to sync (calendar works etc)I have tried several times removing the account and the readding it again but it still fails to do mail. Instead a little message shows at the bottom of the screen saying "Error accessing a remote resource". I google searching this on the web and also on this forum and found no results of any value or help

I have a application 'A' and application 'B'. Say, I have a string resource in the application 'A'.
<string name="abc">ABCDEF</string>
How do I access the value of abc from the Activity in 'B'.
I tried the following method.
try { PackageManager pm = getPackageManager();
ComponentName component = new ComponentName( "com.android.myhome", "com.android.myhome.WebPortalActivity");
ActivityInfo activityInfo = pm.getActivityInfo(component, 0);
Resources res = pm.getResourcesForApplication(activityInfo.applicationInfo);
int resId = res.getIdentifier("abc", "string", null);
} catch(NameNotFoundException e){ }
Always resId is returned 0 always. Can anyone please let me know if I could access string abc from the application 'B'.

I want to determine a resource string is existing or not. Because other programs in my system will build this string, I need to check the string building is success or not. If fail, I would replace this string as other string. is it possible to check R.build.buildid is existing or not?

I just want to read <string-array> resource elements into a String array. I don't want to make a view or anything and mess with adapters - just want to transfer the elements. Is there a built in class for this? Or do I need to treat the resource file as a regular file?

I have a String Array Resource that has about 1000 drug names
<string-array name="index">

Aspirin

Levitra

....
</string-array>
I tried to load this string array into a String[] inside an activity. Using the same syntax provided by Google's java documentation found here.
Resources res = getResources();
String[] drugs = res.getStringArray(R.array.index);
It appears my string-array has too many records and its causing my App to crash (stack-overflow?) When I reduce the string-array resource to about 506 records, the app works again, but adding even 1 more element in the string-array would crash the app. What should I do? I want to code logic to filter and do other things to the list. I do not have a SQL db in the app so I can't do the processing in the DB. Is there a way to iterate through the string-array resource without loading it into a String []? I notice the resource is a pointer. Or is there an alternative data structure or approach that would work?

I have some messages being passed back from my server through php. The problem is that the messages are in English and if the user is using another language they will still get the message in English.
So I had an idea that maybe instead of passing back the message I would instead pass the String resource Id from the android app, that way the app will get the correct string id for their language. I will use this in a number of apps so I just want to know if the string id is guaranteed to be the same across different android projects?

I created a new string in the resource file and got what seems to be an odd error. The name of the string was "continue". The error reported: ERROR invalid symbol: 'continue'
Changing the name by even one character solved the problem so it's nothing serious. My question: is there some set of names we must not use as resource identifiers?

Does android resource files for values and layouts have any way to import other xml files. This is a good approach for products, where there is a core module and many sub modules. The Submodule may also use some of the core defined key value pairs etc. Also, in case with a module, if the view is very complex.. better to manage them as different xml's. Are there any other approach to handle this.. by way R inheritance etc.. I suppose only one R supported per application.

i am updating an app i developed so that it downloads xml files it needs for content management. the files download successfully to the emulator but are not placed in the /files directory that openFileInput() is attempting to read from. i am admittedly unsure as to the proper overall solution here - app originally used packaged XML and was fed to an XMLPullParser - but i cant even get as far as attempting to parse new XML at present because my app cant find the new file sitting in /data/data/[myApp]/ and not /data/data/ [myApp]/files and i cant figure out how to get it in there. the download doesnt work at all if i add that folder to path.e.

I've recently upgraded the Android SDK to the latest version, and I'm trying to re-build the ApiDemos project. I've imported it properly.
The problem is
1. the .aidl files aren't being processed at all by Eclipse during the pre-processing stage.
2. R.java isn't re-generated at all by eclipse
Using Eclipse, Helios release.

My application will have some customisation for each company that uses it. Up until now, I have been loading images and strings from resource files. The idea is that the default resources will be distributed with the application and company specific resources will be loaded from our server after they click on a link from an email to launch the initialisation intent. Does anyone know how to replace resource files? I would really like to keep using resource files to avoid rewriting a lot of code/XML. I would distribute the application from our own server, rather than through the app store, so that we could have one version per company, but unfortunately this will give quite nasty security warnings that would concern our customers.

Can I have sub-folders to hold my drawable resources. For example can I store an image in, say, 'res/drawable/content/images/myimage.jpg' and then find that resource via a call to:
id = context.getResources().getIdentifier("com.mycompany.myprog:drawable/ content/images/myimage", null, null);
I have tried this and it doesn't seem to be working (but I may have something wrong). Is it supposed to work or do all the resources need to be in the root drawable folder? Also, are jpeg files supported and drawable resources?

Is it possible to store strings values in multiple files? Eg, strings.xml, strings1.xml, strings2.xml etc.
I do not mean localized versions of the same file - those multiple files should contain different string ids in the same language, so in code they would be refered like: R.strings1.my_string_1 R.strings1.my_string_2 R.strings2.my_string_3 etc. So, "strings1", "strings2", "strings3" would be a kind of namespace for them.
Or, another way is to have multiple R classes inside one project, which would deal with different stringsXXX.xml files.
Like, currently we can refer to "my.name.space.R" and to "android.R" at the same time, so is it possible to have: android.R my.name.space1.R my.name.space2.R etc
At the same time inside single project?

I'm porting to Android. My existing project has a ton of resource files that I'm porting into my Android project. I have them all in /res/raw/, and I would like to access those resources in my native library with functions such as fopen() and such. Can this be done, or do I have to go through JNI for this as well? I would really prefer not to, for ease of porting and possible speed and memory reasons.

I am currently developing a dictionary application with voice database. I would like to know about the current Android limitation on the file size. I am using a self-provided sqlite database ( > 50mb ) . I tested that once the built .apk size exceeds ~30mb the app will not be installed onto the simulator (INSTALL_FAILED_ INSUFFICIENT _STORAGE). Could anyone confirm me that if up until now there is no way to embed such large size files in a single apk ( Aimed to sell at Google Market without requiring user to download datafile afterwards). Also, is there a limitation of 1,048,576 bytes for a single file in the assets folder ?

I have an XML resource file:
<resources>

</resources>
Using XmlPullParser, on the START_TAG, I can use:
int value = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "value", 0);
to get values 1, 2, 3...however:
int resourceId = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "resourceId", 0);
doesn't work...it just yields the default value 0, or whatever I change the default value (3rd parameter) to be. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or if this is possible?
