Android :: Multiple Screen Support - Size / Image And Layout

Nov 11, 2010

I am trying to develop an app for which I want multiple screen support. I have read the Android article on Best practices for Multiple Screen Support. As per the article we have to follow 3 important things:
1. Mention support for different screen sizes (large, medium and small) and any density in AndroidManifest.xml.
2. Place images of 3 dpi's (120, 160, 240) in 3 folders res/ldpi, res/ mdpi and res/hdpi.
3. In layout's the dimension should be mentioned in "dip" units. Then Android will take care of the scaling on its own.

I have implemented all these points in my project. The images are picked up correctly from the appropriate folders. But the arrangements of the controls in not same. e.g. I ran the app on three emulators 1. Resolution 240*320 dpi 120. 2. Resolution 240*320 dpi 160. 3. Resolution 240*320 dpi 240. (All the emulator have same resolution but different density). The problem is the position of the controls is not same on all the three emulator. As per my understanding if the android:layout_marginLeft and android:layout_marginTop are mentioned in "dip" then this problem should not occur. As the density of the emulator increases the controls get placed more towards the right. Is it necessary that I provide layouts for all combinations of dimensions and density i.e. in layout-small, layout-large, layout- medium, layout-long,layout-notlong?

Android :: How Can I Make Browser Render My Document At Screen's Size?

Aug 8, 2010

I'm working on a site that's supposed to scale fluently down to low resolutions, so that it would work just as well on a phone. This works well in Firefox and Chrome when I just make the window small, but when I try it out on an actual Android phone (Nexus One running Android 2.2), it renders it super-huge! (Using JS's window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight properties, it seems the viewport resolution it reports is 800x1271!.Is there a way to render the page at actual-size in the browser window so I can have my full design show up on the phone? User-agent sniffing is allowed, JS is allowed but discouraged.

Android :: How Do I Make My Image View Fixed Size Regardless Of Size Of Bitmap

Sep 23, 2010

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

Android :: Home Screen Widget Size In Normal Screen And Largest Screen

Mar 31, 2010

I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels.Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?

Android :: Size Of Background Images To Support All Android Screens

Jun 25, 2010

I'm writing an application and I want one of my activities to have a background. I've read the android docs about supporting multiple resolutions etc. but my designer is asking me what size the wallpapers should be and I do not want a lot of images for low, normal, high dpi in all the screen sizes.

What would be the most space efficient way to get a nice screen filling graphic background on all those screens? Android is great and all, but I do not want to end up with a huge application since I need all sizes of images for everything.

Android Screen Size

Jan 17, 2014

I got to know that the devices with screen resolution 1280x720 or 720x1280 are extra large screen devices.

But when I run my application on Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 (resolution 720x1280) throught eclipse, the following code prints "Normal screen" i.e. it is a normal screen device but according to my knowledge it should print "Extra Large screen". If its a normal screen size device actually then why its picking the layout (XML) file from res/layout-xlarge-port folder instead of res/layout? Need to understand this screen size concept so that I can make my application for multiple screen sizes.

// get and check the screen size of the device
int screenSize = getResources().getConfiguration().screenLayout &
Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_MASK;
switch(screenSize) {
case Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_XLARGE:
Toast.makeText(this, "Extra Large screen",Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
break;
[code]...

Android :: Multiple Screen Support - 1.5 And 1.6

Oct 19, 2009

So I'm trying to make sure my apps are compatible with the 1.6 SDK emulator skins WVGA800 and WVGA854. The Android Developers Blog post regarding this seems strange to me. The post talks about upgrading your app using the 1.6 SDK, then says this:
"Note that not all devices will be upgraded to Android 1.6 at the same time. There will be significant number of users still with Android 1.5 devices. To use the same apk to target Android 1.5 devices and Android 1.6 devices, build your apps using Android 1.5 SDK and test your apps on both Android 1.5 and 1.6 system images to make sure they continue to work well on both types of devices."

Now resource directory qualifiers (e.g. "res/drawable-mdpi/" or "res/ layout-large") don't work with the 1.5 SDK. So right now as a dev I have the choice to either:
1) Update my apps with the 1.6 SDK so that they are compatible with the various 1.6 emulator skins and the various hardware configurations coming out. If I do this, the updates will not be available to those users that still have 1.5, which is a "significant number of users."
2) Continue using the 1.5 SDK, without the available tools in 1.6, but try to somehow get my app to render properly in the various 1.6 emulator skins.
