Motorola Milestone :: Video Playback Supported Formats
Oct 5, 2010
Just curious it says that the phone supports MKV files but they do not play with the regular player. I do have a program to convert any video format to MP4 and have done that and it plays no problem with the default player. I've seen in another thread with the droid 2 it can play AVI's? What formats does the phone play? What player is the best that supports the most formats? For my computer I use VLC and that is the best damn player there is for my PC.

Just thought I'd share the video formats supported by EVO for those who may not know. You can play these high-definition MP4 video formats in:
H.263 profile 0 @ 30 fps, WVGA (800x480), max 2 Mbps
MPEG-4 simple profile @ 30 fps, 720p (1280x720), max 6 Mbps
H.264 baseline profile @ 30 fps, 720p (1280x720), max 6 Mbps

I'm just trying to find out what video formats are supported on the Hero? I've tried mkv and avi, but no go on either. This is particularly frustrating since all my movies / video files are in mkv and avi. Also, if these formats can be supported through the use of an application.

I looked into this forum and in Google but with no success so far. Yesterday I bought HTC Desire and can not understand how to play the supported video formats- mp4, wmv and 3gp on the device. I am not trying to stream these files from Internet- I have them already downloaded on my PC. I want to copy them onto my Desire and somehow play them. I have several questions: 1. Do I need to re size the video files- do they require specific resolution in order to be played? 2. Do I need to copy these videos to a specific folder on the device? Or I can just create new folder through my PC and dump them there. 3. How the hell can I actually play the movies once they get onto the device? I can not see an application which launches movies. There is a music player but not a movie player. Do I need to download a widget or an application which runs movies? If yes- please recommend a good one.

Does anyone know what video formats are supported on our phones? I'm downloading AVI's, and wasn't sure if I could play it directly from the phone. Would be good to know before upcoming flights.

I've noticed that since today, video playback on my Motorola Milestone has become almost impossible
The video starts ok, but all the sudden it gets REALLY choppy (like 3 FPS or so)
Audio still runs at regular speed and no glitches there...
This happens with any video, be it Youtube, or some video i shoot with the phone.
Does someone here experienced something like that ?
I turned it off, removed the battery, waited a couple of minutes and turned it back on... and problem persists... Also i've noticed that the time in the status bar, sometimes shows incorrect time...

I am working on an Android application which is supposed to play videos over HTTP on Android devices. Before we setup a server to host the video files just wanted a few things clarified: As per the developer documentation, Android supports .mp4 and .3gp container formats for video. If we use H.263(video) - AAC LC (Audio) audio-video codec used for our media files will we be able to play the video by passing the URL to MediaPlayer class?
I did a little experiment and passed URL of one of the video files(.mp4) to the MediaPlayer class and got the following error:
Command PLAYER_INIT completed with an
error or info
PVMFErrContentInvalidForProgressivePlayback
From the docs, I came to know that for progressive playback, the video's index (e.g moov atom) should be at the start of the file. Questions:
1. How do we make our videos Android-ready?
2. What are the different considerations that we need to make?

Been struggling with this since receiving my X. Seems like no matter what player I use the playback is jerky. It's very subtle, almost as if the video is dropping a frame or so every second. I've tried the stock player, Astro, Rockplayer, mPlayer, Zimly, Act, and the list goes on and the problem still persists.
I've encoded (using handbrake) with all of the settings suggested on the boards and have tweaked things on my own trying to find the proper setting, but still no luck. The strange and frustrating thing is that the exact same files play just fine on my 1st gen iPod touch (clearly an inferior piece of hardware) and on my wife's incredible. These encodes are of standard def DVDs at average settings (a full movie is about 1.3gb, all h.264 mp4 files.
I was able to improve playback by rebooting the X and then playing the video, but this doesn't seem like an acceptable solution every time I want to watch something. I tend to encode and watch a lot of stuff on my commute to/from work, and I'd really like to replace my touch with the X, but the media capabilities are falling way short. Considering switching to the Inc as I know it's able to play my media properly, but I'd prefer to keep the X for the larger screen size (though the Inc does seem to feel better when using one-handed). I'm on the fence right now, but if the X can't function as expected then it might be going back. Unfortunately I only have until the 1st to return it so I don't think I can hold out and see if 2.2 fixes this issue.

I've been using MediaPlayer for playing some sounds and I've found no way to get hold of a list of supported mime types at runtime. I was hoping for something along the lines of MIDP's javax.microedition.media.Manager.getSupportedContentTypes() but there doesn't seem to be anything that achieves this on Android. The only thing that there seems to be is a web page that lists supported media types (at the moment and on the small amount of devices available).
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
Does anyone know of a way of enumerating the mime types?

My Vonage account sends me a .wav copy of each voice message via email and I used to be able to listen to them on my Dinc. Since the 2.2 update rolled in, I get an error indicating that the format is not supported. The common question since Froyo is the same here:Is this just my phone or are others seeing the same issue with .wav files?

What is the maximum read/write microSD speed supported by the Milestone? I couldn't find information on this anywhere.
I am not sure if it's worth spending the extra money for a class 6 (8MB/sec) 16 GB micro SD card vs a class 2 (2MB/sec), as I'm not sure the Milestone will support it.

Question about video playback. Do you have to convert everything to .3GP ? I drop some movies onto the SD card and play them just fine. Then went back to play them it was REALLY choppy. Not exactly sure what is causing this. I would rather not covert everything to a different codec.

I took a few videos over the weekend and when I played them back on my phone, there was a bit of jerkiness, in each video. When played back multiple times, it jerked in the same spot each time. I don't remember if I was running Stagefright or not when I took them, maybe that is a variable.

The Droid can only play MPEG-4s right? If not what's the best format to rip movies to? I tried MPEG4 720X480 and the phone never even saw it on the SD card. Unless I'm doing it wrong (like music, I just created a folder called videos) A certain Tarantino film just leaked and I really wanna watch it during my commute.

I just received a micro hdmi an wanted to know what is the best settings for just connecting my DroidX to my tv to watch dvds? Do I skip the converting process altogether an just make sure that the video that I burned from a dvd can be played with the Droid X media gallery while connected to hdmi? I have converted some dvds (Super Troopers) for optimal playback on the Droid X but when I watch that video through HDMI it really isn't the best quality. I have used DVD Catalyst.

I am not sure which is the culprit, but while playing back video or even at random times, the screen shifts lighter or darker seemingly at random, and one time during a video playback on the TV.com app, it went black altogether. I am not sure whether it is the timer or the ambient light sensor, but I am tempted to turn the sensor off and push the timer back a lot.
