Is there a difference between using a terminal emu and a file explorerer opposed to using the root explorer file manager. I don't have a pc and can't use my card on the market for paid apps at the moment because I'm BROKE!

I've been messing around with my Droid and I stumbled upon the Files app which lets you add a server. Is this for FTP servers or like a local computer connected to Wi-Fi? I have an FTP server I'd like to connect but it says it cannot be reached, even though I'm 100% sure the details are correct.
And another thing: what is the best File Manager/Explorer app? I found like a dozen of them and honestly, I don't feel like installing them all to find out which one is the best.
Specifically, when I go to /mnt/sdcard/download all the files are ---rwxr-x. When I long-click a file I can access a Permissions dialog, but any changes I make there are not actually reflected on the file system. Anyone know what might be going on?

Let's say you have an apk file on your SD card. How would you install the apk file? Terminal emulator, using which commands or another way?

I don't really know where to put this topic but anyways my problem is that i need to edit a line in a file.
So i think of something like this
su
Cd /data/data/foldernameofapp/
Edit "file.dat"
Edit line 4 "text here 2"
i want it to edit like this "text here 3"
Change only the number. or replace the hole line with a new line where i only changed the number. btw the best is if the script can change a line and not find text and change. Because the number in the text i want to change can vary from different numbers.
P.S i can use root explorer and open the file with a text editor and change it, this works but takes forever P.S.S i got root
I'm very intimidated by terminal emulator because I've never used such a thing and it seems like a powerful tool.Many of the roms I'm considering offer special scripts (like Overclock or switch apps) that I'd like to be able to use.Would someone mind sharing exactly step by step how to use terminal emulator to install a program or use a custom script.Are there settings in terminal emulator that I should adjust? Basically I open TE and see a blue screen (yes reminds me of BSOD).Then what.just type the script instructions verbatim? After typing do I use the enter key to run?I'm looking at Fab's Apex Rom.Maybe that will help give an idea as to what options/scripts I'd like to be able to tinker with.Maybe a short video tutorial would help?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing 2.2 ver 2.3.13, I erased cache and personal data (shouldn't have I know but the step by step said to do so) and lost my root somehow kinda. Easy Root said I was rooted, but most of my root apps except for Drocap didn't work , saying they needed root access. After typing su in Better terminal, it said su permission denied. A buddy of mine gave me the zip Droid2root (said it was the same for Droid 2 and X), he also gave me a link to a SWEET step by step using an emulator and then "force closing" the emulator then going back to it and finishing the typing of the rest of the commands. It worked great until, I did a factory rest to try to fix a minor problem I had with my contacts shortcut force closing on me. Well, after the reset, I lost root again, but I couldn't find the link again either. If anyone knows the link, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know. The title had something like "rooting the lazy or easy way" in it, and again it used an emulator.
Even when I try adb shell though my emulator it says: /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro/bin/sh:adb: Permission denied
Alright so, I've recently rooted my phone and I installed terminal emulated, I have superuser permissions and I'm semi-familiar with both. I got an app called Barnacle Wifi Tether and when I try to run the app, it says permission denied and it doesn't ask for superuser permission. When I go into terminal emulator and type in su it says permission denied.I forget the code to manually give SU to something like Barnacle...I'm tech savvy but not Droid savvy yet so be gentle!

Or do I need to connect it via usb to my computer each time and then select to connect in disk drive mode and use the explorer on the computer to browse the folders on my htc?
2. Talking about the htc sync program, I couldn't connect to the computer via bluetooth and htc sync software. Is there a way to do this or can you only sync using usb cable?
I installed ES File explorer v1.4.6 and I was able to add my freeNAS over wifi at home.I can access the folders and can list the thumbnails of the photos on the phone but when I try to view one all I get is a black screen with right and left arrows.If I copy and past the file onto the sdcard, EStrong can then view it from there.any ideas as to why it fails to view the files directly from the network server? It shows the loading process but no pic.

I like the idea of tinkering with command line on my phone, using it to do simple stuff, partly as a fun way to get reacquainted with it, as I use to use command line a little bit with XP and ubuntu. I've batted around between Better Terminal Emulator Pro and Terminal Emulator. One confusing thing is that they seem to use different commands. For example, in terminal emulator the help command brings up a help menu, in TEP it is unrecognized as a command. What accounts for these differences? Lastly, any suggestions for lists of commands and tips for using them, in a way that will work with these emulators?

Coming from a BB user, I used to shrink my OS so I could use only what I needed. I found out that a lot of of preinstalled stuff on my phone that is always running on the background, skype mobile, amazon crapware, my verizon, and so much more. View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the DDMS, I had used FileExplorer and visited /data/app folder to see the .apk files installed in the emulator. After that I had minimized the data folder and thus stopped that process.
But I am observing that this /data/app folder is opening again and again automatically. I dont know what is the reason and how to stop it.
installed Estrong File explorer and I am able to connect to my PC (Windows 7 Pro 64bit) when i select a file to open-for example a mp3 file, i get a error "Do you forget to insert sdcard?" I do not have a SD card in my mobile. is it needed for opening files from the remote PC? I am assuming that Estrong looks for a temp folder for caching, is there a way that i can change this path to something like "emmcestrongcache" where can I find this option?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had the E Strong File Explorer for some time but never really used it. So today I wanted to create a special folder for some pictures i downloaded off the web. All the ones I downloaded were put under sdcard/downloads. I created a folder and named it "Cars" and then went to the download folder, copied the pictures, went to the Cars folder and pasted them there. I then think I made a mistake and went to the original pictures in the download folder and deleted them. Now when I open my photo gallery and go to the download folder, i see frames for the pics but no picture. And when I try and open them I just get a black screen. When I go back in the file explorer, I'm able to go to the "cars" folder, click on a picture, choose image from the drop down menu, and then I can view it. So what did I do wrong and is it fixable?

In doing this, Estrong's File Manager notified me that only 3 of my total applications failed to backup.Can anybody tell me why these apk files failed to backup to my sdcard? The system works just fine after a fresh reboot of my PC. After a few hours, I get the "Login Fails" error (plain text or SMB). The only way to fix it is to reboot my PC. I believe its a Windows 7 setting that causing this. I searched all over the net for a fix and none of them worked. I tried:
Enabling Guest Account
Changed Advanced Sharing Settings
Set "Everyone" as read in the File Share Window
Enabled Inbound/Outbound rules in the Advanced Windows Firewall
Enabled sending unencrypted passwords to SMB via Local Security Policy
I can go into more detail of the fixes I tried if needed. What is an alternative to sharing files from a Windows 7 machine to Android devices? I feel like Ill never get ES File Explorer to work.
Whenever I try to enter any command into my Terminal Emulator on my Droid it lets me only go so far then automatically enters the command incomplete and says things like "path does not exist" etc. I'm running Bugless Beast v1.1 with the Dark ROM patch. I'm also trying to get meta morph to work but when I run the checks it says there isn't enough space on /system and to make sure busy box is installed.
