Motorola Droid 2 :: Global - First Impressions About Device?
Nov 16, 2010
It looks like I am going to pull the trigger on a D2G assuming VZ will give me an early upgrade. I have not been able to get much info on the D2G yet so thought I would see if anyone could share their experience so far here. BTW - I am coming from a Storm2 so have high hopes. I will post my experience once I have the phone in a few days.

After much deliberation, hopefully next Friday I will be ordering the Droid 2 Global. This will be my first SmartPhone and Android device. For those who have the White model, does it stain easily? Would the hard clear case Verizon sells cause any friction on the painted surface, particularly the corners, to wear or chip?

So I thought to help the madness on the others threads that we could make one with all of the pros and cons we have seen in the new official update to help people see what they should do as far as force it or root and etc.Flash is not included so you have to find it in dumb ways and it is not in the market. No more vibrate and silent modes being separate.

Looking for anyone who has the shell/holster combo on their Motorola Droid. I would love to hear your reviews and would especially appreciate photos of it from all angles, both in the holster and apart from it.

-It came quickly
-Installation was very simple (sans flimsiness, see cons), it's a tad smaller so it's easy to get on.
-Came with awesome equipment for installation, like latex finger covers
-Totally fingerprint resistant, as to be expected with anti glare
-It's definitely ANTI-glare
-Really thin, so no sensitivity is lost
-Feels EXTREMELY smooth, I prefer the feel to the standard glass
CONS:
-Makes the screen have a terrible rainbow effect on all lighter screens, a lot worse than I expected, I have an anti glare on my iPod Touch that I LOVE, it doesn't do this rainbow effect nearly as bad. I don't know if it's the screen of the products, or just the difference in protectors, but it's noticeable. Note: I also keep little to no brightness on either of them -There seems to be no adhesive anywhere around the edges of the film, because even with the protector dead center there is a border of bubble (well it just doesn't lay flat). Though if you use a case this would be nonexistant as it would probably cover it -The thinness is a tradeoff, because while it does help with the sensitivity, it's a PIA to put on cause it's so flimsy. So yeah, overall I'm content with it, but it could be much better. I just have to have anti-glare, cause to me I can't STAND fingerprints. Actually the anti-glare I could care less about, these might as well be called anti-fingerprint to me.

Is it just me or does the D2 Global run warm? I'm guessing that's due to faster processor?

Since the Droid 2 Global is coming out soon. I think a Droid X Global (w/ the 1.2GHz CPU) will be the real killer here. Anyone thinks so, too? BTW, I have a Droid X and my daughter have the D2 (R2D2). I like the DX compared to the D2 and my upgrade plan is to get a global Droid phone. Hopefully, a Droid X Global is in the works.

The Droid 2 alone wasn't all that impressive to me. But the Droid 2 global looks like it could be pretty sweet. I'm liking the 1.2 ghz processor inside. I don't know if Ill need the global capabilities but it seems like a pretty good upgrade from the standard Droid 2. Just curious what your guys thought is on this? Don't get me wrong I love my Droid Incredible but I'm wondering if the Droid 2 global will be a little snapping with the better processor.

Can anyone confirm whether the keyboard has been changed from the Droid 2 to Droid 2 Global? I had read that it has been changed but would like to know the specific differences. Hands on reports or pics would be ideal.

I know you can create shortcuts to the main Settings menus (battery use, bluetooth settings, etc.) by just long-pressing the screen -> Shortcuts, but I need to create a shortcut to a submenu (specifically Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode) This is on a Droid 2 Global. Anyone know how I can do this? I have LauncherPro and I know you can make shortcuts with it but programming those shortcuts seems pretty complicated. Also I know you can make additional shortcuts using the LauncherPro "Activities" menu but I can't find the "Network Mode" settings in that list either.

I'm looking to move to Android from my iPhone 3G and up until recently I was pretty set on an HTC Incredible.
Stumbled upon the Captivate recently and have been considering it instead of the DInc. I like the extra screen space (despite same resolution) and the sleeker body styling. I'm a little worried after reading the "bugs" thread here as it seems a lot of people are having a lot of issues with the DCap.Has anyone owned both a DInc and DCap? What are you impressions of the DCap after owning a DInc?

Got my DInc yesterday, ordered in store 5/14, shipped 5/28, arrived 6/1 (thank you, holiday weekend.) Charged it to 100% and started exploring. Went to bed last night with the battery around 40%, left it ON intentionally to run down, was at 14% when I got up, now down to 5%. Will let it die then charge while turned off. Overall I am impressed. Love the feel of the phone (except the plastic back doesn't seem to be very durable.) It's VERY fast (I came from a Razr2 V9m) and the apps are great. Went crazy trying to set up Yahoo! Mail until I realized I needed to TURN OFF WIFI so it would authenticate. Soon as I did that, I was good to go. Used a few Twitter apps, love Hootsuite (I use that on the web) but it's unstable, so I'm using Twitter for Android and am happy with that. Have not used Friendstream yet. Created a Google Account just for my contacts, cleaned them up and had them ready when I activated the phone, everything came in clean. Call quality is excellent even with 1-2 bars, speaker sounds great. Controls are well placed. Overall it's clearly the best phone I've ever owned. Still have a lot to learn. Wish I'd had it over the weekend, I'd be a pro by now. :/
Boxwave screen protector: great item (got the non-glare one). Didn't know I needed a Clean Room to install it. Literally went from the factory plastic to the Boxwave and still managed to get dust underneath. Removed & cleaned it per the instructions, reinstalled, and now have EVEN MORE dust bubbles. I'll try again. The protector itself is awesome, love the matte finish it gives the phone, no fingerprints. Just a royal PITA to install (I guess they all are.) Using the black rubberish VZW combo holster/case. The holster is okay but as others have reported the phone doesn't snap in very securely. Anyone with an active lifestyle had better keep it vertical or it's probably gonna slide out. The case has a really nice feel and offers some but not complete protection (exposed top & bottom edges), but it's fine for me for now. Pretty sure I'm going to get a Seido Innocase and see how it fits with the VZW holster, or, just bite the damn bullet and get the Seido holster as well. That is, unless Accessory One gets their act together and eventually sends me the CORRECT leather pouch I ordered. :/ At that point, I might have to go commando (just a screen protector) but we'll see. I do like how the VZW case makes it so the camera lens isn't touching anything when you lay the phone on its back. Decisions, decisions....................

I'm currently working on Android NDK, porting my libs, and I'm using SWIG (Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator) that is a great tool to generate JNI code around my C/C++ headers for Java.
However, there is a big issue using it on Android, 'cause of incomplete JNI support : 'Weak Global References' are missing. Unfortunatly, SWIG is waiting for a full compatible Oracle/Sun JVM, and use this feature with its 'director' option (for proxy class creation).
For now, I comment each time, in a (kind of) bad way, the use of weak global references in my generated C/C++ wrapper files (4 lines in my case). I think it is really a shame that we can't use (one of) the best wrapper with Android NDK just for one missing feature.
I read that Google Team will add it in future release : "NewWeakGlobalRef and DeleteWeakGlobalRef are not implemented. The VM supports weak references, but not JNI "weak global" references. These will be supported in a future release." (http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/ dalvik.git;a=blob_plain;f=docs/jni-tips.html;hb=HEAD)
So my question is, does anybody know when 'Weak Global References' will appear in Android NDK ?

I know this is going to sound pretty lame but I have never had a need to send or receive a text message but now find that it might be useful. I have a Droid Global phone but I have no idea of how to text. I just want to be able to send and receive text messages from my grandkids.

Duplicate: static options menu
I know how to create a menu in my application with an icon and text on each "button" of the menu, but this menu is only visible on the activity where I created it...
I would like to know if it is possible to create a global menu which would be accessible from all activities?

I was wondering if it is possible to intercept keyboard input on a global level on Android. For example a user types in text into an edittext (does not matter which application) I would like to access said text to check for certain words. Is this even possible with Android's security model (yes I am aware this kind of feature could be used for various wrong things too).

I am having issues with my droid 2 global, bootloader is stuck at "MEM_MAP blank" which i can fix easily, but a really irritating issue is happening...
I am stuck at "Battery Low, Cannot Program". Now dont tell me that i need to charge it! ive had it plugged in for hours. usually it takes 1 hour to get 0% to 100% battery. i was inatlling the cyanogen mod and i did exactly what it said, but it said "Pull out the battery and press "X" and power back" or something like that. so i just got mad and left the device alone, then when i turned the device back on, i got "MEM_MAP blank". No problem. but then i noticed it flashing that i needed to charge it,, several hours later of charging. still have low battery, ive tried to boot into recovery, no luck, i have a external dock if that information is useful, i dont need support on the mem map, just this charging issue.

What do you think is the best ROM at the moment and why? To qualify as one of the best it must be stable not a stable build but stable that theres not a crazy amount of force close or reboots and no other significant problems. Also post what kernel you are using with it.

I'm using Touchdown to access a corporate Exchange server. Our corporate group inform me that they report two devices accessing the network under my user ID (I only have a single device). One device has a 28 character numeric ID, and the other has an ID Moto followed by 12 numbers. An admin mentioned that Droid send more than one device ID.
Is the device ID submitted by TD, or by lower level processes? Does the Droid send more than one ID? Does the ID remain constant for a given Droid, even through re-boots? Is there a way for me to determine the ID for my Droid?

K my frustration level is definitely climbing.I've checked and don't see anything related to this specific issue.I'm following the step by step instructions on RootYourDroid. Have tried both the custom recovery image (adb shell is what's getting me that message) and the busybox instructions. Each time, in the adb window when I try either option I get an "error: device not found" After doing some research, I found info saying it likely had something to do with the debugging drivers. So I uninstalled them, reinstalled them and went through that whole process again. Tried both the busybox and custom recovery image steps. Still getting the error message.
Anyone have any experience with this issue that might be willing to sling some help my way?

My Droid showed 100% battery charge last night when I powered it off. When I turned it on this morning it showed 70%. What gives? Is this phone running all the time, even when it appears to be powered off? I recently learned that applications running on Android can implement what is called a "partial wakelock" which prevents the CPU from going to sleep.
Apparently it was discovered earlier that the built-in messaging app on the Sprint HTC Hero did this, resulting in a battery drain issue. With this in mind, I decided to do a factory reset (removing all apps and system settings). Then I repeated my overnight, power off battery drain test with no third party apps installed. Sure enough, after 8 hours I was still at 100% charge. I have not yet reinstalled any apps so I can't identify the culprit.

My Droid X wont charge when its turned off. When I plug it in the green charge light comes on then the phone boots up and shows its charging, but if you shut the phone off while its plugged in, it wont charge. The green light stays lit but no charge in the morning. So if you boot it up, it will charge when turned on. With my DINC it was best to charge the phone when it was turned off. This is all pluged in and charging from my computer. I am getting about 12 hours on a full charge, thats about 4 more hours than I was getting from my DINC.

I have been rooted since shortly after 2.2 dropped and it broke the SiriusXM app. I love having the ability to do so much with the phone . My question is kind of specific to an application and general to the nature of a rooted device. I have been playing World of Warcraft for 5 years now and with the always present threat of being hacked and all of my in-game items, characters and account being stolen I added the mobile authenticator app as soon as it was available for Android devices. For those who don't know what this is, it is an app which you add to your in game account and will generate a key which you put in upon login that adds an extra layer of security to your account.
