HTC Hero :: Android Update - Desktop Manager
Mar 16, 2010
My Mother just bought a TMobile HTC Hero unlocked for herself. I would like to know while updating this phone, do I have to download the new HTC update or TMobile Update? And if its TMobile one, then does the phone get locked again. While Updating does the phone loose all its data (Contacts, calendar, etc.) or not? And is there any desktop manager for android phones or HTC Phones?

I've got a quick question.
My friend bricked his DX with the Deodexing or whatever. After an sbf flash..
Can we update to 2.2 via update.zip in recovery, install rom manager, and then install MY backup on his phone? I'm currently uploading them to file hosting, and wondering if this would work.
If so, will he be fully rooted, deodexed, and themed(I'm rocking the xtreme 2.2 theme)?

I don't have the plug in for linking FB to the contacts. I used to have it on 1.6 and linked some contact with FB from the timescape app. Also I cannot modify those contact that already have the link to FB. In the contact when I click edit I get this message "Timescape plug in manager contact information is not editable on this device". Does anybody have a solution for this or have the same message in the contacts? I tried to restore the software from scratch but it did not solve the problem.

I am currently running NexBeast 0.1. I am having issues updating ROM manager in the market. I have v1.8.8.7 with ClockworkMod 2.0.1.3. Every time I try to update in the market, ROM manager downloads and then never tries to install. If I hit the cancel download button I get a FC from the market and when I re-open the market it's still stuck on cancel download.

ok I asked this question before but can't find the thread anylonger so here it goes again. I'm coming from a palm treo to the htc hero, and on the treo I had a program named pdareach that enabled me to have a image of my phone on my monitor, that I could control from my desktop. the main advantage was being able to text via my keyboard and not having to press the keys on the cell. Is there a software out there for the hero that is comparable? I've contacted junefabrics and they don't make pdareach for android phones. So am I the only lazy one out there? I don't mind paying for the app if it works, and preferably a program that works without rooting my phone, I'm still a novice here.

The great Koush has updated the great ROM Manager App and says that it should greatly reduce "broken" recoveries because recovery will not need to be reflashed every ROM switch or wipe. You can check out article and info here: ROM Manager App gets updated, once again proves its the easiest way to flash a ROM! | WJD Designs. And remember to go buy ROM Manager premium and support Koush

I'm trying to install Android SDK on Ubuntu but fail when I try to use the SDK Manager and AVD Manager to install Android platforms.
I've downloaded: android-sdk_r04-linux_86.tgz
Then I start the SDK Manager and AVD Manager (UI) according to the README file:
./tools/android
And I get the following
Installed Packages:
- Install SDK Tools, revision 4
Available Packages:
- This repository requires a more recent version of the Tools. Please update-
- Android SDK Tools, revision 4
- Archive for Linux
Now doing an update of the Android SDK Tools, revision 4 or everything results in
99% progress and then the application hangs.
Here's the console feedback:
johanc@johan-desktop:~/android/android-sdk-linux_86$ tools/android
Starting Android SDK and AVD Manager
No command line parameters provided, launching UI.
See 'android --help' for operations from the command line.
Error: null
In the app I choose to update the following package:
Package Description
Android SDK Tools, revision 4
Archive Description
Archive for Linux
Size: 15 MiB

Site
https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml
The console output reads (and the app hangs at 99%):

I've checked related posts and this question specifically pertains to the HTC Hero Sprint CDMA phone. Before connecting my phone to my PC desktop computer, I want to verify if this is the correct method: Question May simply connect my USB cable from my HTC Hero into my USB drive into my PC desktop? Will this pop-up the files, directly, etc? May I simply Copy/Paste the file(s) (pictures, etc.) into a file on my PC desktop hard drive? Is there simply a folder with my Micro-SD card files? Are there any other folders of files, etc. that may be on my phone which may be copied as well (i.e., Apps, etc.)? It's interesting to note that if an iPhone or iPod Touch is ever lost or misplaced, everything is backed up on iTunes on an external device. I suppose if I lose my phone, I'll have to start over. Correct? Or is there a way to backup Scenes, downloaded apps, customizations, etc.?

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero. The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.

We all know that battery power is an important issue with the HTC Hero. I just wondered what people had discovered in the way of apps and using their phones to optimise usage.
I've included things which I like, and which I don't because I find it useful to read about applications which aren't so good, so I know to avoid them, but feel free to try them for yourselves.
Close everything
I installed this from the market, after reading it suggested on a blog, but I'm not convinced its the best to be honest. I've "closed everything" and yet still seen tasks running in the background I'm going to remove this pretty soon unless someone points out a reason not to.
TasKiller
Worked fine for the first week but I've now removed this as I prefer Taskpanel
TaskPanel
I like this a lot and have used for a few weeks. It tells me all the applications which are running and allows me to stop them all. If I want to keep something running (eg scrrebl) in the background then I can set it to ignore "kill all background tasks" for specific applications. It also tells me how much available memory I have.
finally a couple of apps that I find useful for increasing battery usage although not task killers in themselves are.
screebl
This little app turns the screen off very quickly (after about 10 seconds) unless it looks like you're using the phone. It thinks you're using the phone if you're holding it at a certain angle (which you can set).
Graphical Battery Stats Monitor
I installed this yesterday. It takes a while to collect data, but its telling me that it i'm using 5% battery an hour, which would explain why I need a daily recharge.

Unfortunately I've had to factory reset my hero thanks to my son locking me out of it. I had co-pilot live installed and paid for. I've re-downloaded a file manager and can see it on my SD card. Can I get it back onto phone? Will it be easy or do I have to but it again. I don't think I can find the product key code which was sent by email.

I think this is something we need a post covering. So many people are using task managers, which is likely un-necessary for the most part, and quite a few folks don't know what they can and cannot safely kill. All of the task managers I have tried include an ignore list so I figured I'd post what I have ignored in TasKiller, along with what I know about each item, and hopefully others will do that same and we can some up, at the very least as set of stock applications to ignore and maybe some help keeping other application running correctly. So here is my ignore list and what I know about each item (hopefully the ones I don't know about can be explained by others):
Stock:
Touch Input - Reasons obvious by the name
HtcIQAgent - Not sure what it does exactly but it should be left running
IQRD - Not sure
OMADM - Not sure
HTC Sense - The Sense UI - Killing it only causes it to reload and auto-killing it would loop your phone into oblivion
Clock - The clock backend - Killing it will cause your alarms not to go off
Calendar - The calendar backend - Killing it will stop calendar syncing and cause you not to receive reminders for calendar events
com.coremobility.app.vnotes - The voicemail backend - Killing it will cause you not to get visual voicemail notification and stop you from being able to listen to voicemails through the voicemail app.
Mail - The Mail backend - Killing it will cause the phone to stop syncing mail from any account other the google account you associated your phone with.
Gmail - The google backend for your phone's associated account - Killing this will stop you from syncing with your phone's associated account.
Third Party:
Astrid - The Astrid widget's sync backend - Killing this will stop Astrid from syncing.
Handcent SMS - Killing this will stop the Handcent SMS process and cause Handcent to load again when you get a message which degrades performance.
That's all I have on ignore list for TasKiller. I don't use the widget to kill everything anymore because it's not necessary and I tend to dump any app that doesn't properly manager memory and sleep and either do without or find a replacement. The ignore list is still nice because TasKiller won't let you kill an ignored app and lets you hide them as well. I hope more folks will share their ignore lists.

If you use the "End All Background Tasks" button (the widget for this app I believe), it ends the weather functionality on the standard clock/weather widget. The weather does not appear to restart without trashing the clock widget and then replacing it. That basically renders the Kill All Background tasks functionality useless does it not? I'm wondering if it's like this for all background task killing apps as well.

So, I finally decided to root my Sprint HTC Hero. My handset crashed for some reason and would not boot, so I figured while I had my hard cover pried off to pull the battery, I would give Z4Root a shot. Ironically, it worked without me having to pull my battery. Anyway, as I said, Z4Root worked great, but I after I installed ROM Manager, it keeps giving me an error about not being able to flash the recovery image. Am I doing something wrong here?

I know, there are already threads out there but I think my question is different...I am looking for a simple password manager just to show the usernames and passwords for about 30 frigging passwords for work...I downloaded KeePassDroid, but when you enter your stuff, it hides the passwords when you look them up...unless I am doing something wrong? I had a Blackberry before this (I'm never going back) and the password vault they had on theirs work t.It listed the usernames and passwords out in the open so you can get at them quickly. It was protected by a password to get into it, but then everything was open to plain view. Any suggestions?

I just changed to a new desktop running Windows 7. After installing HTC Sync, it can detect my HTC Hero. The problem is, under Sync Manager, it only show "contacts" but no "calendar".
How do I make it to see the calendar. I am running Outlook 2007.
I don't have this problem previously when I used Windows XP. Both contacts and calendar synced properly before.

I went through all the troubleshooting steps in the "Update Available From Sprint" thread, making sure I was on v1.29.651.1, yada yada. Worked on this for a week and a half. Spoke with Sprint, spoke with HTC, no luck. Going to firmware update always reported NO UPDATE AVAILABLE.
Took the phone back to Best Buy and demanded an exchange. After receiving the new phone, went to try to firmware update, it showed that one was available. I asked for my old battery back since it was charged fully so that I could do the update. Put my old battery back in, went to update, NO UPDATE AVAILABLE!
Turns out it was my battery? Put the new one back in and the update was successful. I had scoured the net before but did not notice anyone with this particular issue. I
