HTC EVO 4G :: How To Know When 4G Turned On In Neck Of Woods
May 13, 2010
How do you know when 4G is turned on in your neck of the woods? I'm in the Bay Area and I plan on picking up the EVO when we have 4G but I don't know how to know?

I can't seen to find the neck or hand strap holes on this phone which is common in a lot of phones and mp3 players. Are they on somewhere on the phone?

This is my first post and it comes with some questions:
First and foremost at random times my 3G is turned off even though I haven't turned it off...go into the setting and it says its still on. Only way to turn it back on is to turn it off and then turn it back on? Any ideas just a problem with the phone maybe. Didn't know if anyone has encountered this problem
Second is there and application that I can use that will let me select what things will startup with a reset of the phone? Also is there an easy way to reset the phone without a battery pull? I just like to do this when Unistalling apps and installing apps...always seems faster after downloading or Unistalling after I do this.

Back when the Evo first came out, it was possible to turn off the Sense UI and use the stock Android. This option was deleted after the first update. Does anyone know if the option has been restored with the Froyo update?

We don't even have 3G coverage. My $10 premium data fee is an absolute joke. There's no way I could use that much data on their network. Now, with my g1 on tmobile, I was given the option to turn off 3G so that the phone wouldn't search for it and destroy the battery. But I can't find this option on the evo, so when I'm not in an active WiFi area, then the phone is continually searching for 3G. Is there a way for me to turn off 3g on the evo?

I had a moment of paranoia in the theatre recently. I turned phone off, couldn't remember if I'd turned the phone off, then realised the only way to check the phone was off was to press the button at the top, which if the phone was on would bring me to the screen unlock thing... but if it was off, would turn it on. Is there a way to check its 'offness' without turning it on?

I see that my Android has WiFi. I leave it turned off all the time. So what's it's point? I already pay for a data plan from Verizon, so I don't need it for the Internet. Is there anything I can use it for without paying extra?

I was sitting there last night and my HTC hero was on the table when I heard it vibrate. When I picked it up it was turning itself off. It then turned itself back on again and everything was fine. Bit odd I was wondering if they do this from time to time to sort of update itself a bit like restarting a computer?

Can the Sense UI be turned off easily? I prefer a phone without it and I've been waiting for the Nexus One for Verizon or Sprint. With the HTC Incredible coming out I'm starting to wonder if the Nexus One is going to be pushed out a little further to give Incredible sales time to build. My contract was up months ago and I really need a new phone. I'm thinking of maybe just biting the bullet and getting the Incredible if I can shut off Sense.

Yesterday I've upgraded my Alcatel OT-997, ICS 4.0.4. with Kuano's TWRP and now it's:
Alcatel OT-997D, JB 4.1.1. - (details in this thread, 5th post) [URL] D means I can now use two SIM cards, which is cool.
The problem is the damn thing doesn't charge when it's turned on. It shows the lightning bolt over the battery icon, but in settings shows that charger is not connected. However, when it's turned off it charges, normally. I tried different settings in USB menu: Mass storage, MTP, Camera mode and Charge. Tried with and without Debugging mode. All of those work when connected to a computer in the sense that I can use internal storage, access both SD cards, and so on. But it doesn't charge.
I have tried 3 different cables, 3 wall outlets, and 2 PCs so it's not that. I suppose it's not a hardware problem otherwise it wouldn't charge properly when it's turned off.
So now I use schedule to turn it off before I go to sleep, and to turn on before I wake up, so it would charge while I'm sleeping.

I know about not being able to install custom roms or rooting the phone, but are you able to disable Blur (shadowblur or whatever its called) and just run stock android? Without being able to load a custom rom, being able to run stock android is pretty much a deal breaker for me.

I noticed the 4 big cursor keys on the side (landscape) and bottom (portrait) of the HTC Sense keyboard on the EVO. After playing with the HD2 that has the same layout, I prefer not having them there. It makes me have to reach farther with my right thumb to get to the spacebar and gives an unbalanced feel. I end up hitting the period by accident.
-Can the cursor keys be removed?
-If I install a 3rd party keyboard like Smart Keyboard or Better Keyboard (I've purchased both) on the EVO, will that get rid of the cursor keys?

I'm developing a simple application for the Google Android to turn on and off the wifi or 3g or 2g. id/net/wifi/WifiManager.html#setWifiEnabled(boolean) to turn on and off the wifi. I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same for 3G and for 2G/GPRS? I know it's possible because you can turn off 3G and left 2G on.

I just setup my Activesync to Exchange 2007 and now every single time I turn the phone on I have to put in my password. My Exchange settings on the server are to require password after 1 hour of non use so I set the screen timeout to that but that appears to be just for the screen.
Anyone know how I can have an HTC Incredible not require a password everytime I turn it on?

I have been using CM7.1.0 RC1 - tass - kang for about 3 months paired with 360 launcher v2.0. everything is running smooth. until 2 days ago, the bluetooth always automatically turned on during incoming or outgoing call. i've looked over and over again in setting, but couldn't find what makes the bluetooth on. it's very annoying, since i have to manually turn off the bluetooth after any call
the latest software i installed on my phone is ROM TOOLBOX the free version, download it from the market (very handy n usefull tool indeed). But i didn't change any setting there...

I've just started having a problem with my MyTouch 4G in which it won't charge while the phone is switched on. The battery charging symbol displays but the battery % slowly decreases. I have tried using a different battery but no luck. If I go into "battery usage" in settings it says that Wifi & Cellular Idle are the 2 biggest users with 29% each. The strange thing is that these 2 are always using 29% even if I turn Wifi off and put the phone on flight mode. Another user had a similar problem and it turned out to be an app using buttloads of power but I can't identify any on mine doing this. I've done a virus scan.

Has anyone noticed that if you have your WIFI on that it cuts your cell signal by half? I know I have a netgear N router. With the router turned off I get full cell signal. With the router on it gets cut in half. Sometimes it gets cut down to one or two bars. Anyone else experiencing anything like this? Mods sorry if I posted this in the wrong section please move.

I don't know what to do. I tried to make a call this morning and it kept disconnecting, even though it was showing signal. So I decided to turn it off. This took over 15mins. Finally it went off. I switched it back on to find it will only make Emergency calls and I don't know why.
I've turned it off multiple times now, even taken the battery out etc and nothing works. Its been very slow the last couple of days, and frozen a couple of times. I've only had the phone 3 weeks from new (T-Mobile!)

When I wakeup in the morning, I like to check my calendar to see what the day has in store for me. Of course, I'm often too tired to check and sometimes will go half the day before I see what's on it.Is there an alarm clock app that, after hitting the dismiss button, will open up a program of your choosing?

I am am recent migrant from Blackberry. One of the nice things on the BB was that when you set the alarm, you can switch the BB off overnight and be sure that at the set alarm time, the BB wakes and the alarm goes off. The alarm on the HTC Desire does not seem to do that - i.e. when I turned it off overnight it did not wake when the alarm should have gone off. I tried a couple of other alarm apps and no luck. Is there an alarm app for my requirement? Or is this not possible with an Android phone?

I just got my desire and was downloading/syncing etc., and wanted to make sure I did it over WiFi rather than 3G but couldn't seem to get that to work or wasn't sure if I had. I tried flight mode like iphone but that seem to turn off WiFi too - so then tried normal mode and mobile network set to off - this seemed to leave the signal bars showing, so phone not actually off - so does that mean that data is off?

I have a strange problem. I have my GPS turned off, yet the gps icon on the status bar is still on. What's up with that? I verified that the GPS was off in Settings. I turned it on (sucessfully) and then off again (verified) and yet the icon is still being displayed. Rather strange. I'll try a power cycle to see if that changes it.[It is gone after a power cycle. I don't know when it showed up. Perhaps after updating Google Maps tonight].

My Droid showed 100% battery charge last night when I powered it off. When I turned it on this morning it showed 70%. What gives? Is this phone running all the time, even when it appears to be powered off? I recently learned that applications running on Android can implement what is called a "partial wakelock" which prevents the CPU from going to sleep.
Apparently it was discovered earlier that the built-in messaging app on the Sprint HTC Hero did this, resulting in a battery drain issue. With this in mind, I decided to do a factory reset (removing all apps and system settings). Then I repeated my overnight, power off battery drain test with no third party apps installed. Sure enough, after 8 hours I was still at 100% charge. I have not yet reinstalled any apps so I can't identify the culprit.
