HTC Desire :: Insufficient Permission Error On SD Card
Jul 9, 2010
I know this was a common error experienced by a lot of people, but did anyone ever get to the bottom of it. I have just had it for the first time.
The EVO 4 had a similar problem and HTC moved quickly to release an update which seems to have solved it.
I had heard that the bug could be caused by the auto-backup feature, so I had never used it. However, I recently turned auto-back up on and, low and behold, I get the error. A reboot fixes the problem and I have not had it again since, although I have turned auto-update off.
Some people say auto-update messes up the permissions, others say the supplied cards are of a low quality and prone to corruption... but does anyone know for sure?
Whilst the error is present, you cannot modify the contents of the card and cannot therefore take pictures etc.

It seems that sometimes I can't take pictures due to permission errror on SD card. If i reboot the phone it'll work again. Anyone else get this? Also stops backup and others from running. Can see and load the photos on the SD fine though

I'm getting this error when I try to install or update almost every APK on my Android. SOME will install or update and I can tell you there's nothing to do with file size. The storages seem to have plenty of free space, apps install smoothly when I factory reset my phone, but after a few days I start getting this annoying error.
I'm running the latest Nightly build from CyanogemMod for LG p720h (Yea, it's not stable and I know I should expect some... erm... bugs). It's Android 4.1.2.
I know the Internal Storage is emulated and have tried many many many fixes I found in this very forum and all over the internet. I'm a game developer so I know a few things about adb shell/logcats but couldn't find/understand anything analizing those during an APK install. I can provide logs, etc.

I was trying to install Skype on my phone and got the error "insufficient storage available". I have traced the problem to the bug in Skype that doesn't delete com.skype.raider or something like that. The only way to get rid of this file is to root and delete it from /data/data which is only accessed by rooting. I don't want to root, but I need Skype. I have heard you can temporarily root your phone. Does phone automaticaly go back to stock after you restart?

I have an eMoto, with Android 4.1.1 Jellybean.
I can download any app under 10mb, but anything over 10mb such as Facebook, gives me this error. I have enough space on my SD card and internal memory. Considering I can download any app under 10mb just fine. I have tried tons of apps and games over 10mb and none work, ONLY ones under 10mb.
Is there a way to update android on my phone, which could possibly eliminate this issue? Because I didn't have this problem on 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on another phone.

I'm getting an "insufficient storage" error on installing apps from Google Play (even small 6mb apps). I find if i delete several apps and run it again it works (there is apparently 470MB free despite this).
I've seen references to changing settings so that Google Play installs to the SD card but cant figure out which apply here. And also to clearing the cache for applications (in the TWRP app perhaps?).
I've run the jmz script from the Nabi 2 root thread, but I think I'm missing a step or two (although apps do in fact install, which they wouldn't before).

I just got an HTC Desire that was locked to Telus (Canadian Carrier). I have read that numerous people are using it on Rogers network. From the day I got it when I put my rogers sim card in (the right way) it said "No SIM card in phone" so I could not enter an unlock code. Thinking the SIM was defective went to Telus and tried one of their sim cards and it worked fine, then I went to Rogers thinking it was a problematic card. We tried 4 cards and none of them worked. I then went to Bell (another canadian carrier) and tried their sim card. It worked as well but said that the phone was locked. I purchased an unlock code from the internet which worked. Now the Bell sim card works as well becuase the phone is unlocked. I put my Rogers SIM back into it and it still sais "No SIM card in phone". I also tried a SIM from a european company and it did not work as well. This HTC Desire works on the same 3G 850/1900 GSM that Rogers uses.

This morning when I accidentally turned on then off again the Airplane Mode my phone came up with the SIM card error & had no reception whatsoever. I've tried all the turn the phone off, then on & battery out things etc, even a hard reset but still nothing. I've called Orange & the technical guy called me back but we didn't get anywhere then he said he'd have a word with his technical technical team & call me back.....I'm still waiting. He did say its more than likely a Android glitch. Any ideas what I can do to fix the problem? I don't have Orange Phone Insurance & have had the phone 2 months I hope they'll fix it for free...fingers crossed.

I have tried on 3 occasions today to update to froyo with no success. Thing is when my Desire goes to save data on my SD card I get this message; "an error occurred while saving your data to your SD card, the backup cannot be completed."
Can anyone advise me as to what to do as I can't proceed any further. By the way my Desire is sim free if this in anyway helps.

Alright, so I'm trying to root and I've managed to get adb shell to work in recovery but when I try to push any of the files I get a permission denied error and nothing can push to it. Has anyone else had this issue or know what I'm doing wrong?

I am trying to do is read a contact off of my emulator and display it to the screen. I can't seem to resolve this error. Both of my packages (com.msi.ibm.tutorial and .MobileServiceCallContacts) have the permission READ_CONTACTS set in their manifest xml files. So any ideas as to what I've got wrong? Here is the error message from eclipse console if it helps, it's not helping me, but I'm a little rusty at this and completely new to Android development.
MobileServiceCallContacts]Starting activity com.msi.ibm.tutorial.MobileServiceCallContacts on device
MobileServiceCallContacts]ActivityManager: Starting: Intent { cmp=com.msi.ibm.tutorial/.MobileServiceCallContacts }
MobileServiceCallContacts]ActivityManager: java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: starting Intent { flg=0x10000000 cmp=com.msi.ibm.tutorial/.MobileServiceCallContacts } from null (pid=-1, uid=-1) requires android.permission.READ_CONTACTS

What is the best way to add a new native service that uses Binder and can get past the service_manager.cpp restrictions on what users can add services? I have created a new native service that is similar to the MediaPlayer. I make the addService() calls to add the Binder service to the system. This worked fine when the service was started as root. I moved the new service to be started as the "media" user. Then I receive permission errors because of the table in service_manager.cpp where there is a check for users and allowed Binder services. Do I have to add my service to the table or is there some other way?

SuperSU works fine and grants permission to Root Explorer which also works fine.
But 'getprop: permission denied' is shown in front of most of the headings in 'Phone information' tab in MTK Droid Tools.
And when I click 'Root' button in MTK Droid Tools the following message is shown 'ERROR: SU inaccessible'.
I have granted permission to ADB Shell in SuperSU.
If I manually open adb shell I get $ prompt and then I type su to get # prompt.
I think that maybe permissions of some files are not ok.

In this perticular instance, I am trying to copy the db file to the root directory on the SD card, but its throwing an IOException. How can I change the permission on a folder/file to be able to write to it

If you have an app that targets 1.6 ( using targetSdkVersion=4 ) and that is still backward compatible with 1.5 (using minSdkVersion=3) , and it has the new WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission because it writes to the SD card, there is a problem when the OS is upgraded to 1.6. If a user has Android 1.5 with the app installed, and then gets Android 1.6, the permission is not granted and writing fails. The issue can be solved if the user re-installs the app. I have not experienced the issue myself, but a few users have reported it. Can anybody else confirm this. There is not much that can be done about it, but it would need to be adressed if there is another OS upgrade.

Like the title says why are apps allowed to read the contents of files on the SD card without asking permission? Apps have to ask to read SMS, Calendar, and everything else. It seems like a huge security hole to me.

I am trying to use gwt-mobile-webkit, particularly its location api. It works well with iPhone (both device and simulator) and Firefox and on G1 with 1.6 Android, however, it does not work on G2 with Android 1.5 on it. In result I am getting onFailure callback with Permission Denied error.
So it seems, that there is some geolocation API (gears or HTML5) in the browser available, but it just does not want to ask user for granting permissions. Do you know if there is any workaround or just enable it somewhere in settings?

Running Titanium Appcelerator 0.8.1 on a Windows XP Virtual Machine, with Android SDK 2.1 Removing.classpath results in .classpath being created, but the error simply moves onto the next file it has to write to.The files are in a git repository, checked out via msysgit, but the same error occurs when the files are copied directly from the git server to the Windows machine. Unfortunately the Titanium dev app won't rebuild the Android package for an existing app if the buildandroid files are missing, so it's not possible just to not check these into git.The files appear to have the correct permissions - are writable by the current user account, don't have the read-only flag set (checked via 'attrib'), and have set the access options and owner via the Security/Advanced dialogues on the files and directories (and checked by a Windows IT admin here)
