Android :: Make Read Callers Name Out Loud
Dec 31, 2009I haven't been able to find this setting anywhere. On my previous phone, I could have the phone read the name of the person who was calling out loud (it would say: "Call from...and then their name). I came in handy because I like to have the same ring for everyone and just let the phone tell me who's calling. I haven't been able to find an app or setting for this.

Mar 2, 2014I have a little experience using computers from late 1995 Year, and from year 2000 I am using also Linux from time to time, and very rare but it was a delight freeBSD. I have no experience on Android and MacOs.
Now, I all my family (father, mother, girlfriend and I) changed the phones on Android which is Linux based, but for ARM processors.
Anyway, I have played a little with Android 4 x86 on my laptop.From, my point of view, a Android Smartphone is just a little computer like an raspberry pi / pandaboard / beagle board.So, a mini computer with an Arm processor running a very small and tiny operating system max 8 Gb, when on my gentoo install I had been using about 30-40 Gb. I know, the size can be affected by the compiling flags but anyway.
Now, on all my system I had, from my experience I did 2 Backups, like this:
My laptop is backed-up on the External Hardisk number 1, and the External Hardisk number 1 is backed-up on the External Hardisk number 2.So, as it is a good practice to have a backup handy, I keep 2 backups in 2 different location in case of hardware failure / water flood etc. Some of the files I need are backed up in the cloud, on the internet.
I use to make IMAGES of the Operating System partition, and of the mbr , and of the partition table, with software like Acronis True Image, Paragon, DriveImage XML, Norton Ghost, Clone Zilla.
When I had to do data recovery I did an Acronis "sector-by-sector" approach image of the hardisk, and I recovered files from that image.
I assume that maybe I will need to get root on one or two phones, and one phone need's to be unlocked from the carrier.
Before doing this I would like to make a full backup of the phones.
1) How can I make a FULL backup of the android phones? In this moment my mother phone is a samsung galaxy mini2 Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 s6500 and mine is Sony Xperia L
2) a) If I will "unlock" the phone from the carrier (locked on orange, but i wish to use also Vodafone, I tim, I wind, moviestar, o2 etc)
b) If I will "root" the phone to gain administrator acces on it
After step A) and B) if I will restore the original backup, the phone will be "locked" back to Orange, and "un-rooted", or it will be "unlocked" and "un-rooted"?
3) Instead of having an hardisk like computer have, I guess the smartphone is using an "usb-stick/sd-card/ssdhdd"-like memory for storage of the operating system, so how can I see the partition table, the mbr, on the device?

Nov 7, 2011so i've recently downloaded installed and bought faceniff.i really like the app, but i was wondering if there was a way to make it show the full password.i've decompiled the apk, and i have looked at it for a while but i cant seem to make sense of it all. i have some experience in C++ and C, also PHP VB.NET etc but not in java.
when the code is found it shouldn't be too much work, only thing i need is finding the code that puts the ***'s over the middle of the password.

Jun 21, 2010I bought some cool skins on ebay which 3 came for $10 which you can find stupid easy with a search but they come with matching wallpapers but when I put them on they go on as images and of course we don't get the full image you have to zoom/crop it and you dont get the whole image. Photobucket might resize this so I hope it works but this image I want as a full size. Is there a certain folder to put it in to get it to full size?

Sep 19, 2010I updated my Evo to 2.2 when it came out, but I just noticed something about flash in the browser: I cannot interact with any of the buttons. For example, when browsing the youtube full site in the browser (not the youtube app) you can hit the button to turn on captions, and hit the other button to switch to HD resolution. For some reason, I cant figure out how to hit those buttons. I tried zooming in all the way, and I hit the resolution button, and the resolutions popped up for about .5 of a second, then went away, its too quick to hit it. I tried double tapping the flash to make it full screen and that doesnt work either. The only thing I can get to work is the slider bar, which seems to work fine.

Aug 1, 2010I was looking at the Captivate and the iphone4 in store today and when comparing the same web pages in full page view the text on the Captivate was much smaller than the iphone4, even though the iphone screen is smaller. Zoom just made everything bigger so it wasn't in full page anymore. Is there a way to make the text bigger while in full page view? On a side note, that iphone4 screen is super sharp for text and the whites were much whiter vs the blueish tint on the Captivate.

Sep 3, 2010I finally got my email up and running. Now two different times my mailbox simply emptied. The account was still there and fine, bu tthe emails just went back to 0/0. They are not in Trash, they are gone. I am not sure what I am doing to make the mailbox empty. I tried switching to K-9 but for some reason when I was using K-9 any attachments came in as dat files and I was unoable to view pdf's or Word docs etc when using K-9. Anyone deal with this yet?

Sep 25, 2009Got my Hero almost on release date from Orange Uk. I am well happy with it especially after the ROM update (official Orange one from HTC). I suffered from the missing SMS problem thats mentioned in another thread on here but I installed SMS2mailbox and that seems to be sorted now. I don't use my gmail account as my main email account I use my ISP which is Sky. I have a strange hit and miss problem with the POP mailbox and I wondered if anyone else suffers from it or knows a fix.
I have the email account setup on the Hero and it shows mail in my mailbox no problem, the issue I have is that it randomly deletes mails from my POP server and only keeps the copy on the phone. Heres an example. I get sent 5 emails in a day while I am at work. I check my Hero mail app and it shows them all. When I get home I open my Outlook client on my PC and only 4 emails come down. I can check on the phone and it still displays the 5. First I thought it was a phone setting but the 'Delete Mail on Server' is definitely set to off. This happened before and after the ROM update. I wonder if it is peculiar to Skys mail servers.

Coming from a Blackberry, I was prompted each time I went to delete a mail message with the following: delete from "Handheld" or "Handheld & Mailbox" This way e-mail messages I needed to attend to when I get home from work would be downloaded to my desktop when I opened my mail client (and all the mail I deleted thru the day would be gone when I opened my mail client).

He has come to the conclusion (I have no idea if this is true or not) that it is impossible to set up customized mailboxes (ie "family", "friends" etc.) when using this host. Aug 26, 2010I bought a SAMSUNG Galaxy phone and had set up my official mail (yahoo business mail) under E-Mail settings. And I was receiving mails for a week. Now for the last 3 days, no mails are downlaoding and when I click Email, it only shows 'Load More Messages', but on clicking nothing happens. I am think of resetting it, but dont know how to do it. I tried holding the Email and drag it to the Trash, it moves to trash, but reappears. I tried to delete the Yahoo Biz Mail credentials I had given, so as to recreate, but after clearing each field, there is no way you can save it.

Android :: How To Hang Up On One Of Two Callers
Jan 21, 2010I have had my sprint HTC Hero for some months now and love all the neat apps I can load. BUT... the actual telephone app seems dysfunctional. I imagine the telephone function is built in and probably cannot be fixed by the average developer and maybe this is also a function of the carrier (sprint in this case).
PROBLEM:
When I have multiple calls my Hero interface provides no easy mechanism to hang up on one caller only. It has just one "End call" virtual button and pressing this drops the entire call interface.
So for example if I accept a call waiting then the prior caller is placed on hold while I talk to the interrupting caller. When I am done talking to the interrupting caller I have only the option to "End call". Pressing this will drop the entire call interface. What happens next depends ...
IF I have hung up on the interrupting caller before they hang up on me then I will still have someone on hold (but nothing shows this). Some seconds later (like 5) the system realizes I still have someone on hold and rings as if a new call. Clunky but at least it works.
IF the interrupting caller manages to hang up before my "End call" registers then the phone ends the only remaining active call which is of course the person on hold. No indication of this either except I wait 5 seconds and realize my phone is not ringing. The lag time on the HTC hero is so large that this happens just about half the time.
IF I don't hang up at all but instead just wait for the interrupting caller to hang up then the phone will put up a new screen that shows that the person who just hung up is still active, the person on hold is on hold, but in fact I will be connected to the person listed as "on hold". So the interface is wrong but at least I have not hung up on the holding caller. In this case it is very unclear if my call waiting slot is free or not. I have had people unable to call when I thought the phone was connected to just one person. Effectively the call waiting slot seems already occupied when in fact it is not. Don't know if this consumes double minutes or not.
To me this seems like an event driven system without a properly deterministic event handler. Or perhaps there is really no way for the phone's understanding of call waiting to by synchronized with the carrier's.
Almost done ranting...
Lastly, while making a call the screen seems to stay active for its full timeout period so that my cheek can sometimes press a virtual button and end the call. I would love it if I could press a button to de-activate the screen sooner but unfortunately that button also terminates the call. Wasn't there supposed to be some mechanism that detects that the phone is cheek bound and deactivates the screen? Could use a manual way do force this.
HTC Desire :: Callers Say Powered Off - But Is Always On
Apr 14, 2010Most of the callers complain that my number is switched off but I never power off my handset. I tried with another number and observed the same while my HTC Desire was in front of me and powered on. At times it does connect but most of the time not. I have full bars. I was using HTC Touch Pro2 earlier at the same location for at least 10 months now. Had no issues with network. Got my HTC desire 3 days ago and have this problem ever since.

Oct 18, 2010My lovely Desire is giving me hassle again, when I call someone I can hear them crystal clear, but they cannot hear me, if I cut off and redial sometimes they can hear me sometimes they cannot. I have just done a factory reset to see if that clears the problem, but was just wondering if anybody else has an issue like this?
