Games :: Build Structures Out Of Marshmallows / Spaghetti Noodles
Oct 10, 2010
Messing around on AppBrain I found a new game, Spaghetti Marshmallows. The idea is to build structures out of marshmallows and spaghetti noodles, to reach given points on the screen. What seems to be a very simple game on the surface, actually requires a very strategic planned out execution.

I primarily do hardware and firmware design, but a new product my company is developing has the need for an Android app and since I have the most Android programming experience (which is extremely limited) that leaves the task to me. I need a little guidance figuring out how to do a few things so that I can get this app up and running. I already have a simple GUI to display some stuff, but what I need is a way to handle data.
I am trying to receive a 148 byte stream of data over a serial connection, parse it into a structure and display certain values from that structure. The data is packed in a struct that is sent from a micro controller and due to that it has a very specific layout (i.e. the first 8 bytes mean this, the next 16 bytes are this... ). In C, I can just declare a struct with those values and use the #pragma pack function to eliminate any extra spacing the compiler would otherwise inject for alignment purposes, receive the data and do a memcpy into the struct to write the data. It's not the safest or cleanest way to do it, but it takes very little time and if you do CRC tests to make sure the data received is valid it works like a charm.
Now to the root of the problem: How do I declare structs in Java? Is there a way to pack them tightly like you can using C? Once I've received the binary data, is there a way to parse it into the structure easily? These are the issues we hardware programmers face when dealing with Java...

I've started working on some Android applications and have a question regarding how people normally deal with situations where you have a static data set and have an application where that data is needed in memory as one of the standard java collections or as an array.
In my current specific issue i have a spreadsheet with some pre-calculated data. It consists of ~100 rows and 3 columns. 1 Column is a string, 1 column is a float, 1 column is an integer. I need access to this data as an array in java.
It seems like i could:
1) Encode in XML - This would be cpu intensive to decode in my experience.
2) build into SQLite database - seems like a lot of overhead for static access to data i only need array style access to in ram.
3) Build into binary blob and read in. (never done this in java, i miss void *)
4) Build a python script to take the CSV version of my data and spit out a java function that adds the values to my desired structure with hard coded values.
5) Store a string array via androids resource mechanism and compute the other 2 columns on application load. In my case the computation would require a lot of calls to Math.log, Math.pow and Math.floor which i'd rather not have to do for load time and battery usage reasons.
I mostly work in low power embedded applications in C and as such #4 is what i'm used to doing in these situations.
It just seems like it should be far easier to gain access to static data structures in java/android.
Perhaps I'm just being too battery usage conscious and in my single case i imagine the answer is that it doesn't matter much, but if every application took that stance it could begin to matter.

The object passing between an Android service and the remote binder is happening through serialization of the object. If the service needs to return a very large collection, it seems very inefficient to use this. What is the recommended way to deal with this?

I downloaded the Android 2.2 source code and try to build it. When I executed the make command, I got an error here like this build/core/java.mk:20: *** frameworks/ex/common: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. Then I changed the frameworks/ex/common/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7. Next place, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/jsr305: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/jsr305/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
Last one, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/guava: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/guava/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
By these changes the code started the compilation.
1. Why the error occured?
2. Changes which I did is correct or not?

I want to store some data from structures like this:
...........................
I want to save it to an external file on the sdcard of my device so that other apps can read it (and users can open/copy it). I thought I should use a DOM parser because my data structures are not very big, but I find no tutorials or anything like that. Is there a better way to store this information? how to use the parsers in android?

Seriously, emulation is not good for performance, but most roms running on gensoid look and play better that games developed for Android. Sonic 3 looks lovely, runs at 60fps and never stutters. It even seems to look higher rez than most Android apps.Android platformer games are nowhere near as good looking or smooth. So what the hell is going on? The hardware on top end Android phones (Desire, galaxy etc) is clearly capable.

I'm very new to the android phone's (Just got my HTC hero three days ago.) and I was wondering, are there any good resident evil games for the htc Hero? I've seen some awesome one's on iphone and I used to have some fun Resi games on my old E71.
While I'm on the subject of gaming I have also downloaded the snesoid light and find the music and gaming a little sluggish. Is this just how it is or is there anything I can do to sort that? Would the full paid version work any better?

It appears Camel Games is now giving these three games away. I'm also left wondering what happened to their other games such as Super Tumble, as only the Lite version is left. Maybe that's going free, too? Hyper Jump is also missing from my latest search (whereas the Lite version is there). I'm somewhat in shock as these are some quality games!? Hopefully we'll find out the full story soon.

Browsing around the net at work today for Bluetooth Game Controllers, I came across a Mini Bluetooth Keyboard HERE - it's also selling on Ebay. It claims to be compatible with Android, but as we're all learning Android on one phone isn't the same as Android on another.
I'm wondering two things really: 1) Anyone know if it is actually compatible with Android and moreso if it's compatible with HTC Incredible
and 2) If it is compatible, once connected, can you use it in conjunction with Game Emulators (I have the popular one for GBA) so that I could use the buttons on there to play the games.
It's the perfect size for a game controller (too bad they don't also make one for that purpose) and would be much better than the touch screen controls which impede on the game.

Is it possible to play palm pilot games on an android? I would assume it wouldn't be too difficult since they both use touch. I wouldn't care if it didn't fit my whole screen. There are some games that I really want to play again (Space Trader, Strategic Commander (does anyone know of another game like this)).

someone showed me their iphone I have to admit, my jaw dropped and I was drooling when I saw some of their games (i would that all games were freebie versions)
Question: why does the android platform not have games that are as good??
I remember seeing one games, I think it was called scooter - the whole damn screen moved as u mived the iphone left and right I only played for a minute - but it looked damn awesome why dont we have as good games! the persons phone: heck, it was only an iphone 3g - so u cant say it was better hardware or anything angry birds - I like - apart from that, I haven't seen any games I would even rate (ok, so angry birds is just worms game reinvented - but the subtle use of great graphics make it brilliant)
Important: I have an x10 mini pro which is STILL running android 1.6 - is this the reason why? are there better games on 2.1 and 2.2? or is it to do with the fact that there are better developers for the iphone?

Greetings all, newbie here. I'm a huge fan of the old school point and click adventure games (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Discworld, etc) and am hoping to find something in this genre for my new HTC hero. Any suggestions? Also, I know there's a ScummVM port, does anyone have any experience with that? I'm afraid direct ports will not work well on my 3.2 screen.
