testing applications on non developer's-devices. Is there a way to do that?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe are working on an application that is a "Black Box in a phone" Written only for Android at the moment, we have tested on T1 and Magic, and we are looking for people to help us test it in various circumstances.
The app is designed for pilots and those that fly, tracks the phone in realtime and displays it on others phones and also in 3D on the website, GPS Logbooks - Home | Black Box Flight Recording, using only your Android cell phone.
The app is now in the marketplace, so we are looking for pilots, navigators, glider pilots, balloonists, sky divers and anyone else who likes to fly to download the app and go flying. After that you can publish your flights and share them with others.
Please note that your location data is visible to anyone on the site when you are flying live, so don't use it if you are somewhere that you don't want people to know about.
I'm having troubles with users that report that if they leave the application opened and after a few hours when they return to it the app crashes. I'm pretty sure it is because I'm not storing/restoring the status correctly when my process is killed by the system, but I would like to be able to test it in a repeatable way. Which is the best way to simulate the same behavior that happens when Android kills my process on low memory conditions?

I want to start with a consistent test environment so I need to reset/clear my preferences. Here's the SetUp for test I have so far. It's not reporting any errors, and my tests pass, but the preferences are not being cleared.
I'm testing the "MainMenu" activity, but I temporarily switch to the OptionScreen activity (which extends Android's PreferenceActivity class.)
I do see the test correctly open the OptionScreen during the run.

I've been exploring the Android test package and I'm very confused on how to implement functional testing for endpoint-to-endpoint.
Consider the example below, I have 4 activities: 1. A Contact List Activity 2. A View Contact Activity 3. An Add/Edit Contact Activity 4. A Sync Contact List activity
I want to automate a few tests that will go through multiple test cases simulating a user experience: From launching the application, to selecting 'Add contact;' opening the add contact activity, entering data, saving it, going back to the list activity, and verifying the new contact was saved properly.
As I understand it, ActivityInstrumentationTestCase<T extends Activity> and ActivityUnitTestCase<T extends Activity>, are only useful for testing single activity functionality.
But what if I need to switch between 2 or more activities inside a single functional test case?
What exactly are mock tests... I need to know the mock and performance tests available in android for testing android apps..what is the best tool for testing android apps and how..

Today, I placed our new app onto the market store. It can be found by most mobile phones - unfortunately, it cannot be detected by one specific model which is used by one of our customers. It is the Vodafone 845, with a small screen (240x320p) and low density (120 dpi). It's running with Android 2.1, updated version (i.e. SDK 7), and has all the necessary hardware (GPS, cam, and internet access), but, however, doesn't detect the app in the market. I have already tried anyDensity="true". The app is free, not copy protected, and open to all countries. I have the following settings in the manifest:
xmlns:android="xxx"
package="xxx"
android:versionCode="10"
android:versionName="1">
<supports-screens
android:largeScreens="true"
android:normalScreens="true"
android:smallScreens="true".............
i have written an application that needs to process outgoing calls. Everything works fine, the application has already a few hundred downloads, but now i get feedback from people who would like to download it, yet cannot find it. I have done some tests and have found that the permission "PROCESS_OUTGOING_CALLS" seems to be responsible for this. If i include it in an app, people with branded phones (at least in Germany) cannot find it, as soon as i remove this permission, everything is fine (when i re-insert it again, the app vanishes again)
The weird thing is, that those users can see other apps which use this permission in the market. I have compared my manifest file to outputs from other manifest files and cannot understand why it doesn't work. Here is the manifest file for a test application i wrote to test the problem:......................
I added the application into Android market, but some phones(i think with android lower than Froyo(2.2)) does not find it!
my manifest:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:installLocation="preferExternal"
package="com.skkap.utimetable"
android:versionCode="2"...................
i have received complaints from a number of customers that one of my paid apps is missing from the market and they can't download it after updating their phones to 2.2. I have no idea what the cause is and unfortunately i also don't have access to a device with 2.2. Maybe someone here can tell me what i'm doing wrong?...................

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor my first application, the only testing I've really done to this point is on my Droid X. I want to think through the various hardware differences and come up with a testing plan that is representative of the Android landscape. My initial thought is to create a list of emulators that have unique qualities such as screen size and SDK levels. I've noticed very quickly how the UI of my application will need some adjustment when viewed on devices that don't carry a 4.3" screen. How have you approached this hurdle in your own development? My Manifest file looks like this: I recently got an email from a user saying the application doesn't show up in the Market on an HTC Wildfire. I looked it up and the Wildfire is a QVGA (LDPI, 240x320) device running Android 2.1. The app does appear for MDPI and HDPI devices. Also, I can start up a QVGA 2.1 emulator and install the application without any problems.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is kosher, but I wanted to see if anyone would want to test an app I built. I don't want to release an app to the market without getting out all the bugs I can, but I'm a lone developer trying to build apps on the side in my free time. I don't know many people with Droids, so I'm trying to reach out to the community. I built an app I call "Next Track on Shake". Not a good name, (and I'm up for suggestions for a better name) but I can't think of anything else to explain its function. I listen to alot of music, usually on shuffle, and I hate having to wake the phone up, unlock the screen, open the music player, and change the track. The new versions of Android require PIN or Password when you use a corporate account, and that adds another step in changing tracks. I built an app that allows you to shake the phone, whether awake or not, and it will move to the next track for you. I also added the ability to customize the shake; you can set how hard or how fast you need to shake the phone to change the track. The default shake is a good setting for most people, but alot of people jog with the phone on their arm or hip and would need to adjust the strength of the shake so as to not accidentally change tracks. I've also added the ability to stop/start the service when needed, and I display an ongoing notification when the service is running. When the phone is rebooted, the app checks the preferences, and only starts the app if you had the service running before reboot.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have created an app which needs some testing done. I have tested it on the HTC Hero (UK version) and the HTC Tattoo. Worked well on both the devices. I wanted to test it on the newer android phones like the Droid or the Nexus One. If anyone could help me out with the testing, there is a link to the .apk file below. This app does functions like silencing the ringtone when the phone is flipped, switching on the speakerphone when in call etc.
