Android :: Switching Tabs From Activities Inside Host

Currently I have a TabHost implemented with 3 tabs each containing a separate activity. My question is how do I switch between tabs from within one of the activities that is located inside the tab host. ie say i have a button inside one of the tabs[tab 1], when i click on this button it should switch to another tab[tab 2]. We're in the process of writing an app that has 4 tabs: Map, People, Places, Events. The People, Places, and Events in the App show up as Icons on the map. By default the People, Places, and Events tabs each show a listview, custom rendered, displaying all the People, Places, and Events respectively.
Now, right now each of the tabs has as its content an Intent set to launch the corresponding activity. For instance, there is a MapTabActivity that extends MapActivity, a ShowPeopleListActivity that shows the people, and so on and so forth.
I see a lot of StackOverflow questions/answers saying that due to various limitations in the way the TabHost is setup, it's best NOT to use activities as the content of tabs. For instance, it's impossible to launch a new activity and have it take the place of the existing activity within a tab, whereas it's possible to switch out a View with a different view.
Now, I'm at a crossroads. We've (for better or worse) devoted a fair amount of time trying to get this app to work the way it's currently structured, with the Activities as the content of the tabs. When an icon corresponding to a Person, Place, or Event is clicked, it fires off a VIEW Intent on a URI corresponding to that object; this is picked up by an Activity that then shows the object. The same mechanism is at work both in the Map and in the individual lists. We really like the loose coupling this provides us; we just give a VIEW command and the URI to the person/place/event and it automatically brings us to the right activity. Granted, the activity that's launched covers up the tab view rather than appearing inside of that, but we were willing to live with this.
Here's an issue though: from the Show activity, we want to be able to go back to the map, centered at that person, place, or event. We can launch a new activity to show the map again, but now we have the map activity as the content of the tab, plus the show activity, plus the new map activity in the activity stack; given how resource intensive the map activity is, I'm guessing this is not the ideal way to go.
I guess my question is, is there a GOOD tutorial somewhere showing exactly how to do complex tasks with a TabHost? I've seen HelloTabWidget; I'm looking for something much more sophisticated than this. I'm worried that if we switch to the View based way of doing things, we'll have to do a LOT of housekeeping to intercept all the back events, try to switch out the views, etc., etc., as well as strongly coupling our program in a way we don't want.

how to call BarCodeScanner, and return the value to a field.so now, i have a toast that says "successful scan" and then i want to pass the result to a new activity. when i comment out my intent, everything works (minus the passing of data/switching of screen, obviously) but when i run my project as is, it FC's no errors reported by eclipse in code or xml. any insights?

I have a tabbed applicationen setup. I like to keep the tabs visible at all times and work with its subactivites as 'more or less' standalone application threads.Within one or more of these tab subactivities, I'd like to start its own sub-activity, which should not hide the root tabs.Whatever I've found will call ctx.startActivity() which works, but will hide the tabs by using the full screen.Is there a way to limit the sub actitivies to a parent activities bounds, and keep (in my case) the rot Tabs visible? Where shall I look?

I have some activities in my project like, Alerts,HomePage , Calculator etc. What i want to accomplish is to create tabs for all these activities and insert images for these. When we touch the tab the corresponding activity must load. I have done it using the menu options. But i must accomplish this using tabs. The tabs must also be at the bottom of the page... Should i create another class Tabs.java and tabs.xml or should i write tab host for each activity...?

I've got a basic list activity with a few images that when you select one starts a new activity with a SurfaceView (based on the Lunar Lander sample). Some times the screen is just blank, from some debugging I can see that the background .png is being loaded and doDraw() is being called by the activity doesn't display anything for anything from 4 to 20 seconds. Other times the game activity is loaded just fine. I assumed it was some kind of garbage collection problem but I can't see anything in LogCat and the second activity is actually loaded, just not displayed for some reason.

How should I structure my UI? Should I launch activity after activity and leave the phone to make the "back" button, or should I choose more optimized, but more complex to implement, way with switching manually Views and then manually doing the "Back" button functionality?

I'm starting on Android and got a beginner question on switching between multiple activities. I understand i can go between two activities by invoking an intent and then returning with setResult(). What I want to know is how to jump between multiple activities. Specifically I want to learn about the process life-cycle. I understand how every activity is started ar onCreated(), but I'm not sure how to implement onResume() or onRestart() when I want to come back. So basically I have 3 activities: Activity1, Activity2 and Anctivity3. I start with Activity1 and then invoke Activity2 with an Intent, and Activity2 invokes Activity3. Using buttons. Now I want to come back to Activity1 from Activity3. I do the same thing here too. Make an Intent and call startActivity(Activity1_Intent). But it gives a runtime error.I think I need to implement OnResume() or onRestart(), but I'm not sure how to do this. In onCreate() I make a gridView, so when I come back, do I need to make that gridView again? If anybody could give a small explanation of refer to a tutorial it would be great.

Does switching activities in Android start a fresh JVM? It seems like each activity is meant to run as its own "main" method. If I have a singleton (via Guice, not an actual singleton in this case) should I expect to be re-creating it every time I switch activities?

Basically, how can one dismiss a PopupWindow when changing to a different TabActivity? The onPause() method in my TabActivity causes the app to force close.

I'm currently working on my first android application. I am using a tabbed layout for my application. I followed the tutorial for this on the dev guide and ran into a problem. The tutorial only used three tabs, but I have a need for more. As such, the tabs resize and bunch up. I was hoping someone could tell me how I can make them scroll, like in dolphin browser when using multiple tabs.

As a separate question, my users can change the Locale within my app itself, I then "redraw" the menus using onPrepareOptionsMenu (Menu menu) to refresh the strings within the menu with the new language choosen by the user. Is there an equivalent for TABS (I have local strings within the Title of the TABS) or do I have to delete all the tabs and re-create them from scratch ?

I have an Tab Activity with 4 tabs. Each of tab is showing me the list view. Suppose i m on 4th tab and dragged the list view to the last position and after that i click on 3rd tab and again when i go to 4th tab it is not refreshing and showing me the last visible screen. Actually i want to show the list view again from 1st element. is tabs refresh automatically or we need to do it programmatic?

I've been a couple of days trying to solve this thing but I can'f figure it out.The problem is, simple activity, with simple layout, ScrollView -> LinearLayout -> and a lot of buttons inside the layout (within the scroll content). Everything works just fine but one tricky thing. When I click a button let's say at the top of the scroll content and inmediatelly I scroll down to the bottom of the content and I click other button there, nothing happens until I click a second time and all come to normal again.This can be reproduced anytime and it's code independent (i've tried more than 20 scenarios). I've not much experience in android yet but looks like the scroll listener stops the onclick listener or something like that.

So I've been extremely frustrated by this for a long time now.I've posted before, but can't seem to find a good solution. My goal is to have something pretty much exactly like the installed application details page in the Android Market.I need a list of items displayed along with other content above the list, and would like the content above to scroll up along with the list (exactly like the application details does for the "My Review" and other descriptive info).Due to responses to my previous posts, I came to believe that it really wasn't possible to do this with a ListView.So rather than using a ListView, I refactored my code to use a simple LinearLayout and add individual View items to the list, thinking I could just set each View as clickable and add an OnClickListener to each View in the LinearLayout.That's not working at all though, and now I'm getting even more frustrated.If someone can help me get the OnClickListener working, then I think it'll work, but I do need a separator for the LinearLayout.How do I add a separator like the one used for ListView to my LinearLayout?

I want to create tabs without extending TabActivity. (The reason is that TabActivity cannot handle a custom titlebar as it seems). I have public class startTab extends Activity I read somewhere that I have to use a LocalActivityManager, I assume that I am missing something there. Anyone an idea?

I am running the CTS on the Arm based phone. i have set up virtual host in apache and and added relevent information in windows host file. it works fine for desktop browsers but i am not able to access this from android simulator's browser. as a example a i created a virtual host "testweb" i added this information in widows hosts file also so in desktop browser it works fine with the url http://testweb/ but in android simulator browser it displays error tht page has been moved. so plz give me solution what i shud do to work it and where i am getting wrong..

I am getting UnknownHostException - host is unresolved in my app when trying to connect the emulator to server on my laptop(running on localhost).I have android.permission.INTERNET permission set in my AndroidMenifest.xml. Moreover, with this URL, I am able to connect to my machine's server when I use the browser on the emulator.Has anyone faced and solved such problem. If yes, I would really like to know the solution.

I'm writing an app that will host widgets. The app has custom view (which probably is the source of issue).mView.addWidget() basically just remembers this AppWidgetHostView instance and then mView draws it directly onto canvas. Visually everything is fine.I can see the actual widget. But the issue is with reacting on UI events. Please advise what needs to be done in the parent view in order to correctly trigger handlers in the widgets like onClick().I used standard widgets which normally react on click events. None worked.I also created my own test widget with listener and onClick()is successfully triggered if the widget is added on Homescreen, but doesn't work in my app.mView correctly detects click event and I tried to call widget.perform Click there, which returns false meaning onClickListener is not registered in the widget. But according to source .would call updateAppWidget which would register its onClick listener.

I am trying to figure out if there is any way by which I can access any USB device which is connected to my Android phone's USB port and read data off it? For ex. Can I connect a camera to my phone and pull pictures out of it? I know that we need a HOST-DEVICE configuration to be able to do that... have tried doing this on other devices before picking up my android phone.. thought there would be an easier way to get this done. now, when I connect my phone to a digital picture frame, I can see on the phone that it identifies the USB device it is connected to and goes into a USB mass storage mode. What I want to know is if after this, I can read data from the frame or send data to it. I want to write an app that pulls data over USB and stores it into the phone memory.

I send files to FTP server in my application. Internet permission is set :

It works quite fine when connected with 3G/3G+. Sometimes, not very often, I get a "SocketException no route to host" or "unknown host" exception when trying to connect. When I'm connected with WIFI, it works sometimes and it's very fast, but the same error occurs very often, and when it has occurred I must restart my WiFi to be able to connect again, even with webbrowser. I use apache commons FTPClient this way:
