I have a list that shows items containing text and image. I have to download the images from the remote server and show as list item. things are working fine. The real problem is my list could have around 100 list items and each item has image downloaded from remote server. It is giving me OutofMemory error when I fetch around 70-80 elements. Could anyone tell me the best way to manage this situation?

On the iPhone a user is able to re-arrange the actual rows in a list. Is this possible on Android? If so, any examples would be great.

I am trying to add ListView items one by one. So if I have say 60 items the application would add the views to the list view one at a time -- thus showing the user that the application is loading more things. This is my code:
try {
JSONArray j = getTaggsJSON();
Log.v(TAG, String.valueOf(j.length()));
a = new createSpecialAdapter(this, R.layout.individual_tagg_view,
R.layout.list_item, view, j);
ListView v = this.getListView();
v.setStackFromBottom(true);
setListAdapter(a);
new addViewsToList().execute(j);
} catch (UnknownHostException e) {.....

I'm developing an application which has an listview. I'm currently creating the list item view dynamically from code (linearlayout, which includes 2 textviews and 1 imageview), but i'd like to use an XML resource for this. I read it is resource intensive when getting this view using findViewById within a loop. I thought of using a custom adapter for this, but am not sure on how to include lazy loading of the image then.

My app, among other things, downloads and displays images from the Internet. Some might be too large and trigge an OOM when ImageView.setImage() is called. Of course, this normally makes the application to crash. I've put catch (OutOfMemoryError e) around the method invocation. I know that catching errors is unusual, but in JSE applications it proved to work pretty good, especially when the problem was due to image manipulation that consumed all the memory. The Android app seemed to survive for a while, but then it blocked the computer. All buttons are irresponsive, even though the phone seems still alive (e.g. it's playing the audio notification that new email has been spotted). I tried holding the power button, it triggered the shut down menu, but touching a menu option didn't do anything. Only after a while, the phone became responsive again.
Now, it's reasonable that one can't display everything on a smartphone; I'm sure there's some inefficient memory management I'm doing (perhaps keeping too many images in memory); ok, I have to improve my code. Given that I'll do, how can I add some safety facility to avoid the most severe consequences? Making an irresponsive application it's a 100% sure way to make people to uninstall my app and give bad reviews. I'm thinking of a two-pronged safety approach: 1) whether it's possible to understand in advance whether an image is too large to be rendered by itself;
2) whether it's possible to recover from an OOM in any case.

My activity has a set of buttons on the left half of the screen and a ListView on the right.Initially the focus is on the first button. When I browse the buttons by pressing DOWN arrow key and then press the RIGHT arrow key, the focus does not go to the topmost list item. Instead, the list item correspondingly on the right gets focused.Is there a way that when I press the RIGHT arrow key, the focus goes to the topmost item on the Listview?

I am making an android application that shows a list with users, I would like to add the image,name,status,and a button in every row of the list, just like in the androids 1.6 native caller-> favorites tab.Until know I have managed to add the image and name using an ListActivity but when I try to add the button the list becomes unselected.So I have 2 questions, first is the list mentioned above listviews or listactivities? also is this possible using listActivity? and second, what is the difference of the above mentioned classes?

I am on Android 2.1 and I have one multi column Custom listview Using BaseAdapter with an editable edittext at the end of the listview. If the data in the listview do not contain the data of user choice then user should be able to enter data. If the data is already there in the list user will be able to select the data using custom selector. If a selection is made in the list view and user wanted to enter data in the text field at the bottom after selection then the marker in the list view should be unselected. I tried to use onclick() method on edit text using click listener. First time when it is clicked, edit text is getting focus and onclick() method is not fired. And when it is clicked second time, onclick() method is fired and notifyDataSetChanged() method is called. I tried to call the notifyDataSetChanged() method from the Focus Listener, list view selection is gone in my first attempt and edit text is not receiving any data input from the keyboard (frozen).

I use http://stackoverflow.com/questions/541966/android-how-do-i-do-a-lazy-load-of-images-in-listview/3068012#3068012 to load images in a ListView and a GridView. It works but the images are loaded form bpttom to top. How to fix that?
Bonus Question: Can I use a loading animation in a image view while the real image is loaded? Right now it's just a default image.

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

I am trying to set up a ViewFlipper that changes a SlidingDrawers content each time a button is pressed. So far every view I set up worked fine, but now I am trying to create a ListView (including single_choice_mode) within a child view of the ViewFlipper, but my attempt only let to a NullPointerException. As I only discovered ViewFlipper today, I am not yet familiar with it and may not have understood it completely. if someone could give me a hand and help me find out what I have done wrong, that would be great. Here is what I have done:
The code for the onClick event of the ImageButtons:
public void onClick(View v){
if (v == btnExposure){
mFlipper.setDisplayedChild(0); }
else if (v == btnProperties){
mFlipper.setDisplayedChild(1);}
else if (v == btnSpecialEffects){
mFlipper.setDisplayedChild(2);.............

I have a list where i basically need a hierarchy of items. Any children of an item would be padded slightly, as to easily distinguish their parent item. How could this be achieved? Note that i could, if needed, make each parent show no children, and then when the parent is clicked, a new list containing all of it's children is loaded. This however requires more clicking to display information than i would prefer. Also, the items themselves will contain graphics and whatnot (to show a drag'n'drop button, etc), so it would be best if it visually appeared as if the item itself had a margin, rather than the contents of the item being padded.

In Android, I want to present the user with a list. When an item on the list is selected some action is performed, and this list item is no longer selectable. It is also 'grayed out' or the like to indicate that it cannot be selected the next time the list is displayed. I have seen the isSelectable() override in Adapter, but I believe this causes the item to be treated as a separator, which causes visual problems. And I have not found a way to 'gray out' an item.

I have a list view and an adapter that sets alternating background colors to the list items ("zebra" list style):
public View getView(final int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) {
int colorPos = position % colors.length;
...
convertView.setBackgroundColor(colors[colorPos]);
return convertView;}
But now, when i select an item using scroll wheel, or when I click an item, the original colors for selecting/clicking do not override my custom backgrounds (I can see the original color below the one I set).
How can I set the original colors for these states?
