Android :: Instruct Eclipse And Ant To Have R.java File Generated In Package
Jan 1, 2010
Is it possible to instruct Eclipse and Ant to have a R.java file generated in the package com.example whilst the package declared in an AndroidManifest.xml file is com.example.d?

Apt while generating the resources, is it possible to provide a different package name for the generated R.java class. Currently it seems to use the same package name as the one in manfifest defination of AndroidManifest.xml <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"package="com.tejasoft.dialer.mobile.android"> Also, is there a way to give custom class name instead of default R name say Resources.

I am doing the Notepad tutorial, exercise 2. I started by creating a new Android project and chose Create from source to import the downloaded source files for the excercise. But now I get many errors in Eclipse, and the problem is that there is no generated R.java class. How can I solve this? The folder gen / is empty. I have errors on Notepadv2.java and in res/layout/note_edit.xml and both seems to be related to the fact that the generated R.java is missing. Here is my import statements in Notepadv2.java:
import android.R;
import android.app.ListActivity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.database.Cursor;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.ContextMenu;
import android.view.ContextMenu.ContextMenuInfo;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.view.MenuItem;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.ListView;
import android.widget.SimpleCursorAdapter;
They are created by the Eclipse command Ctrl+Shift+O.

Now I know android works closely with java programming, so android is based off of java.In my application, I want a spinner, with 8 choices, and when the "spin" button is pushed, I want the spinner to randomly choose one option.
Can I create the spinner entirely with java code outside of android and then just insert the code into the .java file in eclipse? I'm familiar with java and would be able to pull this off if you can do it this way.

I've been working on a project for several weeks now, and just tonight I started having a problem. The R.java file is no longer being generated. I've attempted to clean the project (the first time I do this it removes the R.java file but doesn't regenerate it) and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the SDK. I've also tried resetting adb to no avail.
This problem does not occur in my other Android projects. They clean just fine and regenerate the R.java file like nothing is wrong. This particular project is the only one suffering from this problem.

I downgraded to Eclipse 3.5, and the following still doesn't happen when I build a project in Eclipse:
1. .aidl files don't get processed (at all).
2. R.java isn't generated.
Used to work. What the heck?

I have a button that launches the google maps app on my device via an intent. I want to be able to pass it a php page that generates a KML file.
I have done this on a website before using the googlemaps api in JS - but it doesn't seem to work on Android.
My php file is as follows;
CODE:..............
Launching with:
CODE:.................
It launches maps, finds the file - but won't display it 'because it contains errors'.
Is this just not possible, or are there other ways to construct the intent that might work?

I'm using an ant build file that has been generated by android. Our Android application requires a JAR file that lives inside the lib folder of our project, so I need to adjust the classpath that ant is using when it builds stuff.
When I run:
ant -lib lib debug
the project builds just fine, but this should really be inside the build file itself. The build file that android generates references the android_rules.xml so a lot of this stuff is automated. I guess my question, what the best practice here when working with the Android build rules ?

I am successful in creating file using openFileOutput(). and can read the file using openFileInput().
I am able attach file from external storage sdcard while emailing the same using getExternalStorageDirectory as sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, Uri.parse("file://"+Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory()+"/ zibra.txt"));
But while trying to attach file from the openOutputFile stored area using sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, Uri.parse("file://"+ getFilesDir() + "/zibra.txt"));, resulting emptied file emailing.
My file is stored in "/data/data/com.example/files/zibra.txt".
what is going wrong in it?

We are suddenly unable to install our app on G1 developer phones with 1.6. Works perfectly on emulator. When installing the app we get:
Installation error: INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE Please check logcat output for more details. Launch canceled!
And logcat:
PackageManage: Couldn't copy package file to temp file.
What does this mean? We checked that there is actually room enough on the phone.. We tried reverting the code to a revision that worked previously, but are getting the same error.

I'm developing an Android project which currently has 4 packages:
com.myapp.app.activities
com.myapp.app.db
com.myapp.app.ws
com.myapp.app.utils
Would I be able to create an additional package which is just com.myapp.app. Eclipse isn't letting me create this package. It tells me a package with this name already exists. If I start a new project and create a package called "com.testing.app" and then create a new package called "com.testing.app.activities" afterward, it works fine.
For Android developers: What I'm wanting to do is extend the Application class and have it in a separate package. Suppose com.myapp.app can't be used, what's a good name for this new package?

I accidentally deleted the AndroidManifest.xml from the Package Explorer panel. The file still exists intact in the original directory but I cant find any option in the Eclipse ide that seems to be for restoring it. I thought it might be 'Import' but manifest isnt one of the types on offer. Can anyone suggest how I can get the file into the package?

I renamed the package in the manifest from com.a to com.a.beta in order to upload a different version to the Android Market.
In the manifest I changed the referenced entities (services, activities etc.) to use the fully qualified name "com.a.X" instead of just ".X". Of course the code still references com.a.R, so there is lots of errors in Eclipse. My expectation would have been though that R.java will be regenerated in com.a.beta. But it is not generated at all.

I am writing an app that has a consistent code base, but has different resources that make it a new "app". My ant script copies AndroidManifest.xml, res and assets dirs for a particular app prior to kicking off the build. This approach works great if all the apps have the same application package name. However, I want to be able to install more than one app from this common code base, so I must change the application package name. If I change the package names in each AndroidManifest.xml, then R.java gets generated with the new package name. This causes all my references to the resources constants in my common code base to throw an error. It would be great if I could specify the package name I want aapt to use when generating R.java. Does anyone know if this is possible?

How do you instruct users to report a bug in Android? I'd like to get send detailed instructions to my users to get the most of their bug report. I know there are various apps that send bug reports from the device and I was wondering how other Android developers deal with this.

The only available reproducible example I can find to share with the board is the Android sample code NotePad, which is loaded into the IDE's Package Explorer as 'NotesList'. I want to know why, in the package's NoteEditor.java, LinedEditText (extended from EditText) can't be renamed? In other words why can't I rewrite this extended class as, say, "Lined_EditText" in the two lines where the word exists, in its class name and its constructor? They are the only two locations, as far as I can determine, where the words exist in the entire package.

Is there anything the Dalvik VM supports (in terms of bytecode) which is not used currently because the .class files don't have it?
As an example, if people would write their own Source-to-DX converter for their functional language XYZ, would they be able to implement e. g. full tail calls although the .class file does support tail calls only under certain circumstances?

Again and again I have the case that during development, the Android SDK suddenly doesn't regenerate the "R" file. Usually this is due to some error in one of the many .xml files, but that darn thing doesn't give the slighted indication, as to WHY it suddenly refuses to regenerate that file. There is no error or warning listed for any of my .xml files and manually checking all those (meanwhile almost hundred!) XML files for errors is no real fun, either! Is there some option or log or something that would allow to locate the problem quicker and more direct? Last time I had to do a lengthy binary search (i.e. copying and removing files to/from a second test project) trying to locate the offending file. That's really a nightmare and not how it should be in any decent SDK that deserves that name!

I am trying to put an XML file containing over 1,000 different fish into my app so that I can read this file, create an Array and attach that to the AutoCompleteTextView. I first tried to create a string-array in a resource file but apparently the array was to large and would never actually load anything after a certain number of values. So want I want to do is add that XML file to a place in my app that I can access it and read from it. Whenever I try to bring the XML file in I get all these errors in Eclipse. So how do I add this file and how do I reference it later in order to access it? I could just store it online and access it that way but I think it is a little bit of a waste to have to access the net for that if I can instead just add it to my package setup someplace.

If i have a apk file and want to know the package name and class hierarchy, how do i do it?
Suppose I have some sample APK file named "SampApp.apk" which contains classes inside "com.android.sampApp".
Is there any tool in Android SDK which shows the package name when APK file is passed as a parameter.
As the Class files are compressed to dex file I am not able to check the actual package name.
