Android :: Create Transparent Window Without Starting A New Activity?

Mar 19, 2009

I have a 2D app. When the user presses a button, I need to quickly open a translucent 3D animation and overlay that on top of the 2D app. This is similar to the "Translucent GLSurfaceView" demo in APIDemo.

However, with APIDemo on G1, it takes about 100~200ms for the new Activity to come up. For me, this is too long. Is there any way to make it faster (to about 30~60ms).

My idea is to create a transparent Window object that contains a SurfaceView and hide it. When user presses button, the Window is shown.

Android :: Starting Activity Witouth Window From Widget

Apr 17, 2010

I recently (yesterday in fact :)) started creating widgets.

So my first widget I want to create is something like: * A 2x2 widget * Containing 2 buttons * Button

1: Register current time and location * Button

2: Open up an activity where configuration can be modified, registered times and location can be viewed,...

Now the problem for me is button 1. As I only try to do some registration data (so no further user input required after pressing the button) I would like to just show a loading bar and after wards Toast a message to screen, or a popup if anything goes wrong.

This is what I do now:

CODE:...........

So what happens: I click the button, a plain black screen pops up (Altough I did not specify a layout upon creating the activity), and after my work is done the Toast shows up and the activity gets 'killed'. Basically that is what I want to do except for the black screen to show up. Is it possible not to show a screen upon creating the activity?

Android : Launch Browser Without Starting A New Window?

Feb 9, 2009

Let's say I have an app that has a "search on Google" button. Every time the user choose it, I want to bring up the browser and run a Google search. Currently, I use: startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(url)); However, each time, it launches a new Window inside the browser. After a few times, the browser complains that it cannot open new Window anymore. Is there a way to tell the browser to re-use the last Window I created? Something like what you would do with <href=xxx target=_mywindow> in HTML?

Android :: Starting Second Activity From Main Activity On Button Click

Dec 4, 2009

Need an example of how to create/start a new activity from the main activity. I have a button click event on the main layout. Originally I just used setContentView(R.layout.secondactivity); which brings up the layout but I don't think that is correct since the secondactivity class is not instantiated at this point yet. I have looked for such an example and can not find one.

Android :: Create A Pull Down / Up Window In Droid GUI?

Mar 30, 2010

For Android GUI: I would like to create a window that I can pull up from the bottom of another window, kind of like the Notification bar or the tab in the bottom on Spotify for Android.

I want to be able to grab a small piece of the window and pull it up. Or just click it and it will "pop up". And afterwards be able to pull or click it so it returs to its original space.

Does anyone know a good way to do this?

Android :: Activity Should Be Transparent / But Has Black Background

Apr 22, 2010

My use case is writing an overlay controller activity for a landscape camera preview. I followed the instructions from a couple of tutorials for writing a transparent theme.When I start this activity from my root activity, the layout gets drawn correctly, but the background stays black. I tried to use @android:style/Theme.Translucent instead, but this Theme inherits the orientation from the calling activity (landscape) and thats not what I want.The application holding the camera preview is set to landscape view as it does not display the preview correctly in portrait orientation. (see old google bug report)What I wanted to do was to put an independent activity for user interaction interface in front of the camera surface holder (this activity should be set to 'portrait', or even better to 'sensor')

Android :: Starting New Activity From Activity

Jun 9, 2010

When I was originally learning about Android a few months ago I swear I read something about a way to immediately launch an activity when starting a task. I am curious about this now because I need to display an intro screen on launch but I don't want the intro screen to be the root activity. Does anyone know if there is something like this and if not what is the best way to handle an intro screen?I tried googling for a few hours to find it but can't for the life of me.

Android :: Activity Leaked Window

Oct 2, 2009

Is the 'Activity leaked window' issue (http://code.google.com/p/ beepmystuff/issues/detail?id=3) fixed in any of the latest Android releases? I'm not sure about the Android version I'm using. I get this error during orientation changes. I create PopupWindows inside TextView. When I change orientation when the popupwindow is shown, my log says Activity has leaked a window (popupwindow) and then sometimes the application crashes, but not always. When the application crashes, the log says 'Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: View not attached to window manager'

Android :: Leaked Window In Preference Activity

Jan 30, 2009

I've created a set of preference screens building on the tuts on androidguys. My preference XML contains nested PreferenceScreens. The below doesn't occur in the root screen, only once clicking to a child PreferenceScreen. Once in that PreferenceScreen, even before selecting an EditPreference, if I change orientation (i.e. flick the G1 keyboard out) I get an error: 01-30 09:33:54.080: ERROR/WindowManager(1261): android.view.WindowLeaked: that was originally added here.I have previously overcome this in other activities by utilising the onPause etc methods with custom dialogs I use. How can I prevent this in the PreferenceActivity? What am I missing?

Android :: Error When Starting Activity

Mar 22, 2010

I'm starting an activity when a button is pressed, and normally (in other apps) haven't had an issue. But when I press the button in this app, I get an "unable to marshal value" error.Exact(ish) error from LogCat:
03-22 02:49:02.883:
WARN/System.err(252):
java.lang.RuntimeException: Parcel:
unable to marshal value
{CLASSNAME}@44dcf1b8
I feel that this might be related to the extra that I'm passing to the intent. I'm passing an ArrayList as a serializable to this new intent. My concern is that the data structure that the ArrayList contains isn't being serialized (as it's a personal data structure).Is the array list content data structure causing this? Something else that I'm missing?

Android :: Starting An Activity For Different Third Party App

Aug 19, 2010

I'm working on an app and I want to integrate the Last.fm app into it. Basically, when someone is looking at an artist in my app, I would like to have a button that they can tap to open up Last.fm application with the artist's information.

This intent works, but it loads a menu asking which app I would like to use (Browser or Last.fm):

CODE:..........

However, I just want to start the Last.fm app and skip the dialog asking which app to use, I thought maybe using the setPackage() method would work like this: i.setPackage("fm.last.android");

But it causes the app to crash:

CODE:............

Is it possible to just start the Last.fm app?

Here's a copy of Last.fm's AndroidManifest.xml for reference.

I tried debugging by introducing a breakpoint in the first line of the onCreate method, but the error occurs before the breakpoint is even hit. Any idea of what is going wrong, or any other way I can debug this issue? I am using Eclipse.

Android :: Starting An Activity In OnStart

Apr 14, 2010

I'm trying to start a floating activity from onStart to retrieve some info from the user right when the initial activity begins.

I have the following:

CODE:............

And callProfileDialog() is just:

CODE:..........

ProfileDialog.class returns a String from an input box. If the result returned is RESULT_CANCELED then I restart the activity.

The problem I'm having is that when the program starts, the screen is just black. If I hit the Back button a RESULT_CANCELED is returned then the initial activity shows as well as the floating activity (since it recalled itself when it got a RESULT_CANCELED). Why can't I get the activities show by calling ProfileDialog.class from onStart()? I got the same result when I called it at the end of onCreate() which is way I switch over to use onStart().

I have also tried the following:

CODE:.........

But this doesn't work either. It all works fine once I hit the back button but without doing that, it's all black.
