Android :: Widget Starting Service Also Starts Main Activity

I have a widget that is supposed to start and stop a service (start it when it's not running, stop it when it is). This is working fine, however, each time the service is started, my app's main activity is also launched, which I don't want from the app's manifest, it works as I want it to (without launching the main-activity, just the service), but then I obviously don't have a main activity anymore.This is how I start the service (I would assume this is the normal way, and I can't see any reference to what might cause the MAIN intent to fire).

Need an example of how to create/start a new activity from the main activity. I have a button click event on the main layout. Originally I just used setContentView(R.layout.secondactivity); which brings up the layout but I don't think that is correct since the secondactivity class is not instantiated at this point yet. I have looked for such an example and can not find one.

My initial activity is basically a splash screen while preforming initialization and login in to network server. To save memory I want to finish() the splash activity once it starts the main menu activity. I still want the remote service to operate. Testing shows it does. But am I going to get into trouble doing this? I know I can restart the remote from the main menu activity but I am trying to save overhead by not starting it twice. The remote service is required by the splash activity.

I have a service that listens to a socket. When receiving certain input it is to create an activity. When receiving other input, it is to kill this activity. I have struggled for a while to make the service communicate with the activity through AIDL (http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/aidl.html), but this seems to not be effective. I think AIDL is only effective when the process that is to be talked to is a service, not when it is an activity? I would love some directions or suggestions on how to solve my problem.

I hav an app that is like a relational database. There is a main app activity that users manage things with. There is also a widget that will display important info and add data to the database. When the widget is clicked, a configure class displays a way for the user to edit data. When the configure activity is done, the widget is updated and instead of going back to the home screen, the apps main activity is started. I can't find where the main activity is being called from. Wouldn't I have to create an intent and start Activity() to get this behavior? When done updating, I want the home screen and not my app.

I have a service that sometimes starts applications.The problem is: if the *previous app* (any app) was recently exited via the home key, then the following message appears in the log:ActivityManager: Activity start request from 10024 stopped.And there's then around a 5 second delay before the target app (any) is launched.If the previous app was exited with the back key, there's no problem.If the previous app exited more than a few second ago, no problem.The same also occurs with a broadcast receiver (which also requires the NEW_TASK intent flag to launch an activity).I don't know if the delay was there in 1.5, but I'm assuming not since I can't find the error message in the 1.5 source code.

I have a service which collect data and send them to a certain URL and updating the main activity GUI, so which is better in the performance to use a long service with listeners to collect the data and threads in it to update the GUI and sends to the internet or to make another service responsible for updating the GUI and sending to the URL only while the first one just collects the data?

so the application I've written has a service (that tracks GPS data) with a single main activity that binds to it with bindService in it's onStart() method, and unbinds from the service in it's onStop() method using unbindService( ServiceConnection ). I also have an activity which is an options screen, that is launched by pressing a button on the main activity. On this options screen, I have a checkbox that says "Run in background", which, if set to true, means that when the user exits the application with eier the Home or Back buttons, the service will continue running, not turning the GPS off. I do this by calling this.startForeground onUnbind, and this.stopForeground onRebind, if the setting is set to true, and stopping and starting my location reader onUnbind and onRebind respectively if the setting is false. If the service is running in the background, it also displays a notification to ensure the user understands that the GPS is still running and draining their power. This notification is displayed and stopped by relying on the startForeground and stopForeground methods......

In my application, there is a service which has a running thread to capture data from remote server, and also this service is triggered by AlarmManager, for example let 1:00 am to start the service. After the service finish the task, it stop itself and the main activity need to update GUI. I don't know how to let the main activity know when the the service stopped, so that the main thread can update GUI.

I wrote an android program that: has a main activity for UI, and it starts a service. The service timely callbacks the UI activity to update views. It works fine except: if the activity is closed (with BACK) and start again, the service will also be started again (The service plays audio file, so there are two overlapped sounds). I use bindService with BIND_AUTO_CREATE flag to start and connect to service. According to the document, it should create service only if it doesn't exist, but obviously it starts another instance when opened second time. All I want is when the activity is closed, the service goes on running, and when the activity opens again, it can reconnect to the service. Is that possible? Or I just misunderstand the usage of service?

I recently (yesterday in fact :)) started creating widgets.
So my first widget I want to create is something like: * A 2x2 widget * Containing 2 buttons * Button
1: Register current time and location * Button
2: Open up an activity where configuration can be modified, registered times and location can be viewed,...
Now the problem for me is button 1. As I only try to do some registration data (so no further user input required after pressing the button) I would like to just show a loading bar and after wards Toast a message to screen, or a popup if anything goes wrong.
This is what I do now:

So what happens: I click the button, a plain black screen pops up (Altough I did not specify a layout upon creating the activity), and after my work is done the Toast shows up and the activity gets 'killed'. Basically that is what I want to do except for the black screen to show up. Is it possible not to show a screen upon creating the activity?

I have made a Android Widget which displays two articles (title + image). In addition to this, I have buttons for flipping backward and forward through the articles. What I don't understand is how I can change the Widgets RemoteViews when the buttons are pressed. Which should be one of the most basic operations in a widget, however, I can't seem to figure it out.
So... Can I do this with just a OnClickListener in the AppWidgetProvider? Or do I have to create an Activity without a window (visibility = false)?

I am developing an application in which the user require to register first and than got the user page. For that i have made layout and the layout consist many fields, so, i have made part of layout and also made the separate activity for the each layout. The layout like address, phone, etc... After that i have wrote the code for calling an activity and it works fine. It means when i press the "Next" button the another page will come and it will also consist some textview ,edittext and previous and next button. Actually, i want something different like -- When the user fill the first form and he will proceed to next, the content written by the user should not gone when the user press "Next" button. The content should be there which was written by user. And same way i have have 6 pages like that way to complete the registration process. So, have you any idea to solve above problem? I really need your help because right now i stuck at this point. So, please any body help me out of this problem. I would appreciate your help. I am waiting for your reply.

Im writing a program that offers a quick reply dialog upon receipt of an SMS.
However, I am getting an unexpected result. When I receieve an SMS, the appropriate dialog activity comes up displaying the correct phone number and message, however there is a second activity behind it that is the 'default' activity in my program (it is what opens when i launch my application)
I do not want this second activity to come up. The quick reply activity should come up by itself over top of whatever the user was doing before.

I'm writing an application that starts with a loading activity. In the loading activity the app requests html from web and parses the html, then it sends the parsing result to the main activity. The main activity has several tabs, and contents of these tabs are based on the result of parsing.For example, the result of parsing is a list of strings ["apple", "banana", "orange"], and I need to pass this list to main activity, so that the main activity can create three tabs named after three fruits.I would like to know if there is any way to pass a list of strings among activities, BTW, is it the common way of do this?

I created an application which enables the user to set whether he wants to receive notification while the application runs in background mode. If the notifications are enabled an activity should be started (the dialog should appear on the screen).
I tried to enabled it the following way:

This is the method from main activity. When onPause() is executed isRunningInBackground is set true.
When I tried to debug it when the main application was running in the background the line
startActivity(intent) had no effect (the activity didn't appear).
Does anyone know how to midify the logic in order to start an activity from the main activity when the main activity is running in the background (after onPause() is called)?

I have a main activity, then i call a new activity intent from this. Lets call this SecondActivity. Then from my secont activity i call a browser intent. Then my browser intent call my second activity's onNewIntent method.Evereything work fine, but when i click on "back" button on my phone on my second activity, i will not going to my main activity, but the browsers activity, why?

I have a map app which works fine when its stand alone but it causes an unexpected error when I try to add it as part of another app. My current app which extends Activity tries to launch the map activity with the following lines of code Intent m = new Intent(this, HomeSetter.class); startActivity(m); I also have the xml setup correctly <activity android:name=".HomeSetter" android:label="Screen 4"> </activity> <uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" /> </application> However when I try to launch it crashes everytime. I have 2 Mpai 809t octacore phones, almost the same specs (first one with 1gb ram and 20130303 rom version and second one with 2gb ram and rom 20130122).The most recent rom version has the Preview window perfectly working, the oldest no. I noticed that the fault is the missing Apk Suspend Window.apk and his Library (libhallwindowjni.so).
Copying the apk and library from one rom to the other does not the trick. The service never starts at boot. I tried almost everything, also copied all framework and system apk files from one rom to the other, nothing... the apk never starts at boot.I would like to develop an Ota update for this phone to fix this issue, so i would really like to understand the reason of this behavior.

I would need to know when one activity starts or get's focus. I need this notification for any activity regardless of his type, name or whatever - not searching for one specific activity. Checked the ActivityMonitor and the Intent and I haven't found a generic intent for this purpose. Or I hadn't understood well the descriptions from the Intent ACTION_xxxxx.

There are an EditText and a TextView in my Activity. I want to set focus on the TextView when the Activity starts. I used the following code:
TextView myTextView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.my_text_vew);
myTextView.setFocusable(true);
myTextView.setOnClickListener(this);
myTextView.requestFocus();
But the code doesn't work. The EditText always receives focus when the activity starts.

I am getting a crash intermittently when my Activity starts up either initially or when the screen gets rotated I get several log messages which I have been unable to get any insight from: timeout expired mFreezeDisplay=1 mFreezeCount=0 App freeze timeout expired Force clearing freeze then lots of: Lock_layer timed out (is the CPU pegged?) Key dispatching timed out then I get ANR annotation: keyDispatchingTimedOut the trace has alot of sending signal 3 to alot of PIDs

I have an activity which loads a TableLayout. This is made up of TextView and EditView fields. When I run my app within the emulator the layout appears correctly (WITHOUT the soft keyboard appearing). When I run the app from a device (HTC Evo) and enter the activity the soft keyboard ALWAYS appears. I tried doing an OnFocusChange() for the first field in the layout and then doing:
InputMethodManager imm = (InputMethodManager)getSystemService(Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE); imm.hideSoftInputFromWindow(tvIndications.getWindowToken(), 0);
It doesn't work. The soft keyboard always appears.

I have 2 activities, A and B. When A starts, it checks for a condition and if true, it calls startActivityForResult() to start B. B only takes text input so it makes sense for the soft keyboard to automatically pop up when B start. When the activity starts, the EditText already has focus and it ready for input. The problem is that the keyboard never shows up, even with windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysVisible" set in the manifest under the <activity> tag for B. I also tried with the value set to stateVisible. Since it doesn't show up automatically, I have to tap the EditText to make it show.

When the Activity starts, the EditText is focused, but soft keyboard isn't displayed. If I click on the EditText, then I see the soft keyboard. Do I need to set aditional parameters to display soft keyboard when my Activity starts?
