I my android application,i would like to read a text file which is placed on the sdcard. Read the file to search for a string: "some string" and would like to get the value for that string.
Is there any way that i can do that in android.

I am new to Java and Android. I have a flat file (pipe-delimited) stored in R.raw called word list.text. I want to open this file and quickly search for a word I pass into my procedure. I've been searching for a simple way to do this but not having much luck. Can anyone share some code on how to do this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to read a file "words.txt" from a resource. It is a very simple, but large (2 MB), text file that I want to read line by line. I have put the file into /res/raw/words.txt, and try to open it with the following code:

However, I get a java.io.IOException. This is not a "resource not found" exception, so the resource is opened correctly, but the readLine() produces the error.
I tried using the InputStream itself, with the result that read() produces -1, which stands for EOF, as if the file was empty.
I have a text file added as a raw resource. The text file contains text like:

The text get's showed but after each line I get a strange character [] How can I remove that character ? I think it's New Line.

But when using the DDMS perspective, "File Explorer" View, I can't see anything in the "data" directory, I'm assuming because permission denied. Is there a way (short of rooting my ion device) to read what's in that text file?

There is my code. The problem is with the inputStreamToString(iFile).It says that it is undefined. Im working my way through an android book and that is exactlly out of the book. I have looked around and tried a few different ways but cant seem to make it open the quizhelp file and display it in the TextView_QuizHelp.
I have the localized strings file that is used in the Iphone app that I work on to port to Android. Are there any tools that go through the file taken from the xcode project and build the xml needed to use the strings in android? I'm sure this might be a simple question, but unfortunately this is my first time using Java and working the Android SDK.
I am uploading files on Android using the Apache HTTP libraries, in particular using the MultipartEntity.
I'm uploading to a service that allows me to send them chunks of the file, and once complete, they'll reassemble the chunks. I'd like to take advantage of this feature.
Here's the scenario.
File FOO.BAR is 20 MB. I'd split it into some arbitrary chunk size, let's say 1 MB, which means 20 chunks. Chunks #3 and #14 fail (maybe the cellular/WiFi connection was bad). I can now re-upload just these two chunks and everything will be good.
What I'd like to know is how can I read only part of a file (like the data between 3MB and 4MB)?
The file piece should be an InputStream or File object.
I am new to Android and relatively new to Java so please bear with me. I have an XML file stored in the res/xml that I am trying to write to. I know how to read it using XmlResourceParser, but I have not been able to find a way to write to that file locally. Could someone point me in the right direction please.

1. Launch my application, and click back. 2. Enter keyword in google search widget, i..e 'a', and launch it. Everything works fine. 3. Press Home. 4. Enter keyword in google search widget, i..e 'b', and launch it. But my application still got 'a' from getIntent() method.
The problem seems to be caused by activity life cycle. For step.4, only onRestart -> onStart -> onResume -> ... is called so that I can't get the launching intent from google search widget. The bug goes away if I finish my application in onStop method. (But it will cause problem for landscape<-> portraint switch since onStop is also invoked when switching screen). Is there any way to get the query string from google search widget for this scenario? Or did I miss any setting in AndroidManifest.xml?
