Android : Task Killer And Running Apps
Dec 17, 2009
what I understand there are apps that will automatically restart even after you kill them? I often see things such as Spring Nav, Calander, VM, IM, Voice Search etc etc, in the task screen...even when i havent been on the program all day and have killed it. Why do these start back up and, is there a way to keep them off? I only ask because I notice my phone starts to lag and when i check the ATK i see several draining my memory (and battery?) so I try and clear em out again and it speed up after that. Better app out there? This is really getting irritating...should i uninstall the ATK and let the phone manage memory and would that keep it lag free? I love this damn phone and the things I can be free to do now...just hate having stuff running that slows me down when I dont need it.

When I kill tasks in ATC and then hold the home button, it still shows apps running. What's up with that?

I noticed on a lot of the other threads: "If you hold down 'home' you can see your running apps, so you don't need a task killer, just to exit the apps properly" However, on my Nexus I hold down 'home' and it just shows me the last 6 apps I've used. Is there a different way of doing this for the Nexus. or am I stuck with having to get a Task Killer/Manager?

I followed the advice of getting ATK installed to "Quit" apps and preserve battery life. My problem is so many apps are running and I never launched them. WTH?
Why are so many apps constantly running? I can quit all apps, plug into charger, then check it 10-15 minutes later & they are all up again. Apps like Sprint Navi, Amazon MP3, etc.....stuff I never use at all.

Since I upgraded my Desire to Froyo I am having trouble closing the apps. I use 'advanced task killer' to kill the apps. But if I go back to the 'advanced task killer' few minutes after closing all the apps, I see all the apps are running again. And also I cant close the default music player with 'advanced task killer'.

I notice that when I open Advanced Task Killer I see all kinds of apps I never started up and ran, even if I kill them, the next time I open ATK, after the phone goes to sleep or I go off to something else and come back, there some of them are again.Alarm Clock - and this has an icon (red bell) next to it that is NOT the Alarm Clock apps icon (white face clock) that comes on the phone so kind of curious what the heck it is?Corporate Calendar never use this, never use an Exchange server, don't want it to run.

Anyway, I just wanted for everyone to post their favorite Task Manager/Killer, and why, and if there are any flaws. I personally use Advanced Task Killer Free. It has a simple UI, and the when you select or unselect apps it remebers it so next time you launch the app you can only remove the apps that you usually do, and keep ones that always run. It doesn't slow down or break the system.

Sorry for yet another task killer thread, but I can't find an answer to this one. I understand from several of you that task killers are not needed because of the way the Android system operates. I have tried and tried all of the suggestions given on how to manage apps manually, but my Inc is just plain faster when I close all running apps.My question is this, is running a task killer harmful in any way?

Has anyone used both. Ive heard that that Advanced Task Killer, still drains the battery. What about the Automatic Task Killer, which puts everything to sleep when not in use.

OK, like most here I'm struggling a bit with battery life. Last night for example I was 100% charged when I went to sleep, woke up to the phone at 72%. So yeah, nearly 30% battery lost simply sitting there doing nothing. So, I have just now killed off the DRM service and media hub in running services in hopes that my issue is what others have experienced.
However... I routinely notice many other apps running in my task killer "Advance Task Killer Free". Just now for example I just shut everything down. I sent a text message to the wife, and now the following apps are once again running:
Voice Dialer
Media Hub
Amazon MP3
There are others that I actually want going, JuiceDefender, SysTray Monitor... but what is up with these above?? I am CONSTANTLY seeing them run. Is there a way to shut these down for good? Why are they starting up on their own? Does anyone know if this is a part of my battery issues?

How do you know which ones to kill and which to keep going? If I kill say a running app like smooth calendar will it restart automatically again when needed? I have an app called missed call now if I kill that will it still work when I have a missed call and allow the led light to blink or once I kill it I have to manually start it back up?

I have the DroidX, everytime I go into Task Killer I see mostly all the apps I have are already started, without me physically starting them. So, I kill all the apps but when I go back into task killer thay are all started once again. Seems to me these apps shouldnt be started unless I started them. Not automatically started. It's killing my battery life.

I like how in winmo , you can click the top right icon area and pull up all open apps to quickly switch between them. with android, i have to hit the home screen, swipe left (usually one time) to find my app and "re-open" it again. it's a hassle. maybe android doesn't have this option, maybe it's just a winmo thing, but i'm still getting adjusted from winmo > android.

Can you set your advanced task killer to automatically kill apps that you haven't used for a certain amount of time? for example 10 minutes?

I have tried 3 different task killers but each one do not seem to be killing the task even though it says it is. When i open the "killed" apps, they open to the last screen before they were killed. I am using the froyo ROM. On 2.1, when the apps were killed and then re-opened them, it always went back to the main screen.

I downloaded advanced task killer and select all the extra apps that I want to stop running however I can clearly see from the status bar that the app is still running. Things like brightness slider and stuff. Greenify seemed to actually really work but since I'm not rooted I cannot use that anymore.

First off let me tell you what I have done. I've turned off Wifi, 4G, email updates when I check it. I turn off internet and the other "data to apps" setting. I lowered the brightness. Turned off GPS and Bluetooth.
As of now I'm doing the plugging in charger, unplugging trick several times...to see if that helps. (I must admit it's stupid that I even have to try this)
So, here are my questions:
1. How to I add apps to the ignore list for advanced task killer? I go to the ignore section and it's just a black screen. I don't know how to add apps.
2.What exactly is the CDMA" thing? I know what to do (I've seen the link)...but I don't know WHAT it does. Will it effect my ability on the phone?
3. What exactly is Google Talk...and how do I get rid of it(if it takes a lot of battery power) I noticed that if I hold the "finder" button and talk I can search on google! Really cool! If I turn off google talk is that feature gone? Also...how do I turn off google talk? (I could find it...but I consider this my "lazy" question".

Is there a way to keep apps in memory?
I have a Galaxy Nexus which has a lot of ram. I only use some minor applications but it seems the system kills the processes which are only several mb all the time.
When I check my free ram its mostly half empty. Is there a way to tell android to keep an app in memory?

I've been using a Task killer without problem since I got the Desire but since yesterday when reading through one of the threads on here and downloading a load of stuff the Task Killer has started behaving badly, I've tried two different Task Killers and they're both doing the same.
When killing some apps the screen seems to restart, like it killed the Sense UI but I've put all the system processes on the ignore list.

I want a task killer that automatically kills processes when they load. Some apps like HTC sense and the built in messanger app I would love having them killed instantly, is there one that i can get? Before you say, yes the Eris DOES need a task killer. Asked any eris user, once it gets below 30 MB of ram, it slows down to a near halt. They majority of thos for me is processes that load without me telling them too, and ons that I never use, such as htc sense or the default messager apps. I'm rooted btw.

I know this was talked about before at different times but I still have 3 questions.
1. what is the difference between a task killer and a task manager?
2. should we be using one of these apps or not?
3. when you look at the awake time if it is like 70% or 80% and you aren't using the phone a bunch I take it that means something is running, how can you find what is running.and is the awake time that big of deal?

Looking for a guide on how to use task killer. I had task killer on and deleted it. I think I was killing tasks that were needed to keep certain functions running that I use frequently. If someone would take the time to help me understand how to use one, I think I would be much more successful with it.
example - text messaging just stopped ( werrent receiving them ) . Once I took task killer off, everything started working again.
