Android :: Tabbed Application With Location Listener Implemented In TabActivity TabHost

Sep 25, 2010

I have an application that has a tabActivity and 3 tabs. all off the tabs use a location listener and work with locations. i implement onPause and onResume for every tab to remove and start listening for location accordingly. is this the right way to go? i had another idea to work with and that was implementing a location listener to the tabActivity and doing broadcasts to the child tabs with the location, but it seemed more complicated.

The problem with my current solution is that whenever i switch tab i lose the location i got in the previous and i cant use getlastknown location because i dont want the last location on start of the application.(does this make sense?) what can i do to solve this problem. a thing that will work better will be to have one variable that will hold the last location from the onLocationChanged and i can observe its changes and call methods onChange.

Android :: App Widget Configure Activity Opens Main Activity

Jan 10, 2010

I hav an app that is like a relational database. There is a main app activity that users manage things with. There is also a widget that will display important info and add data to the database. When the widget is clicked, a configure class displays a way for the user to edit data. When the configure activity is done, the widget is updated and instead of going back to the home screen, the apps main activity is started. I can't find where the main activity is being called from. Wouldn't I have to create an intent and start Activity() to get this behavior? When done updating, I want the home screen and not my app.

Create New Activity Or Update View Of Existing Activity?

Dec 24, 2012

I am working on developing an app and I am not sure when should I use a new activity and when should I update the existing view.

For example, lets say I have a view that shows a multiple choice question.Now, when the user selects his choices and clicks on say "Evaluate", I want to show the same question view but along with the right answers and explanations for each option. So does that mean, I should send an Intent upon a click on Evaluate or I should just update the view (i am not sure how)?

If I send an intent and show a new screen, how can the user go back to the next question without displaying the answers? If I don't create an new activity, how can I update the existing view that is already displayed?

I want to create a TabActivity that works like a browser.

When the activity is created, it has two tabs: "Tab1" and "Add Tab". When the "Add Tab" is clicked, it should Add a new tab.

Tab 1 | Add Tab
==> Add Tab is clicked
Tab 1 | Tab 2 | Add Tab
==> Add Tab is clicked
Tab 1 | Tab 2 | Tab 3 | Add Tab

All my tabs contents are instances of the same Activity.

Android :: Orientation Change Crash In Tab Activity With List Activity

Jan 21, 2010

When views with different type have same id and screen orientation changes,

either java.lang.ClassCastException: android.view.AbsSavedState$1 or java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Wrong state class -- expecting View State will occur. (depends on the view's order)

Because View.dispatchRestoreInstanceState() checks id only.

You may wonder why anyone would make views with different type to have same id.

But it can happen when you use tab activity.

Imagine you have tab activity with two children activity.

Tab1 is ListActivity and Tab2 is ExpandableListActivity.

Both activity have id of "@android:id/list" but the type of view is different.

This means we cannot use ListActivity & ExpandableListActivit at the same in one tab activity.

General :: How To Install Widget From Activity View

Feb 11, 2012

is there a way to install a widget from a Activity view? I've implemented a Activity which shows the user all widgets installed on the system, the user can tap a widget icon to "install" the widget on the workspace.

If the app is installed as "user app", i cant bind the widget to the allocated id, if i install the app as "system app" in /system/app, all is working.

can i workaround that or is it in android gingerbread only possible to pick a widget through the system wide "pick/choose" activity/dialog?

Android :: Emulate Back Button In Multi-view TabActivity

Jun 5, 2010

I have a TabActivity with several tabs. Each tab corresponds to a specific view, and those views may further switch to other views. For example, one of my tabs displays RSS feed list, after user clicks one of the RSS feed, it will switch to a view displaying a list of articles, and after user clicks one of the titles, a full article view will be displayed.I'm going to add support for "back" button in my application. For instance, in a full article view, after user presses the "back" button, it should switch back to the article list view. And if user presses it the "back" button again, my application should switch back to the feed list view.My idea is to maintain a Stack<View> during navigation, and every time user presses the "back" button, the program will pop a View out of the stack, and set it as the current view. But I would like to know how to set current view in TabHost.

Android :: Activity Restart Crash After OS Kills It

Mar 8, 2010

Activity SplashScreen is the launching activity for my app. It sends a request to my server and gets back a user data it then uses to populate a user object which is a static object. Once it has that it calls the MyMapView activity and finishes itself. A force close occurs when I hit the home button and then open up enough other apps so that Android kills MyMapView to get more resources. Now when I open my app again it tries to start MyMapView and bypasses SplashScreen. There is no user object so I get null pointer exceptions. I have tried to Override the onSaveInstanceState and OnRestoreInstanceState but it seems that those are not available when Android kills the activity. I also tried android:finishOnTaskLaunch with the SplashScreen (maybe this should be put on MyMapView but the article I read said different) and that seems to have no effect. What I would like is for the activity to not restart after Android has killed it. What can I do about this?

Android :: Intent Activity Crash Behaviour - App Restarts Halfway Through The App

Oct 13, 2010

I have a pretty standard iPhone app that creates a series of around 7 unique Activities initialised by Intents.

However if the app crashes on the 7th Activity, the app restarts on the users phone around the 5th activity. The problem then is the info gathered from activities 1-4 is null, meaning the app is useless and the only way to get the app working again is to either continually press back or else kill the process.

Why does this behaviour occur, and is there a way to force the app to start back at the first activity when it crashes.

Therefore, to initiate a tab for the next (remaining) activities, I call a class that extends TabActivity, from the first tab.All this class does is to assign and call activities based on the tab click.Currently, to close all activities i am using StartActivityforResult.But in this case, while calling activites from the TabHost, setContent does not accept a result code as a parameter.Help me to solve this one. My application is stranded in a blank screen before closing. i.e. in the TabActivity class.

Android :: Create Widget Like Analogue Clock Widget That Update Itself?

May 1, 2010

I can create a static widget without thinking, I can even create a widget like the analogue clock widget that will update itself, however, I can not for the life of me figure out how to create a widget that reacts to when a user clicks on it. Here is the best code sample that the developer documentation gives to what a widget activity should contain (the only other hint being the API demos, which only creates a static widget):

public class ExampleAppWidgetProvider extends AppWidgetProvider {
public void onUpdate(Context context, AppWidgetManager appWidgetManager, int[] appWidgetIds) {
final int N = appWidgetIds.length;

// Perform this loop procedure for each App Widget that belongs to this provider
for (int i=0; i<N; i++) {
int appWidgetId = appWidgetIds[i];

// Create an Intent to launch ExampleActivity
Intent intent = new Intent(context, ExampleActivity.class);
PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(context, 0, intent, 0);

// Get the layout for the App Widget and attach an on-click listener to the button
RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.appwidget_provider_layout);
views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.button, pendingIntent);................

Android : TabWidget Activity Handling - Does It Create New Activity EveryTime?

Apr 27, 2010

When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order--A, B, A, C, A, B--how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?
