I am developing a small app for Android. I am creating my own view.
I am planning to design the layout to be:
<LinearLayout>
<MyView>
<Button><Button>
</LinearLayout>
But when I run my program, my custom view will cover the whole screen. Is there anyway to avoid this?
I have already tried to add android:layout_width, layout_height to be wrap_content, fill_partent, but no luck.

I have a simple ListView and on that ListView I have placed a number of custom defined Views. The CustomView has ImageView and two TextViews.
The CustomView also has a "stateful drawable" as background, so that the background image (a 9-patch) changes if you press the Row in the ListView. When pressing the Row, the background image changes to a Red-ish thing.
The problem is that when the background changes from the default greyish, all the Views in the CustomView (ImageView and TextViews) still have their greyish background and thus creates very ugly greay boxes on top of the now redish background.
What is the best way to solve that problem? I hoped that such things were handled automatically (as it is done in for example .NET), but I was wrong it seems.

My question is almost exactly this question:
Clone textview to append it to a ViewGroup
However, I was inflating a view, and then attempting to clone it at the object level for performance reasons (I don't want to parse XML every single time), so that answer doesn't help me. View.clone() is protected and it apparently doesn't have a copy constructor. Is there any way to do this?

I'm still trying to figure out how best to layer views on top of other views. I want to do something like the ZoomButtons on top of a custom view. I tried getting the ZoomButtonsController's parent and then adding views, but I didn't have enough control and they ended up on top of the buttons. I've gotten close by using a FrameLayout and some gravity on the top two views. But this has some interesting effects. Since this is contained with a tab, these two top views appear on top of all four of the tab pages. I want them on top of one of those pages only. Apparently, nested FrameLayouts don't mix well. What is the proper and expected way to do this? Here is more or less my complete layout....................

Is there a possibility to add a view or derivative (button, textview, imageview etc...) to another view without having to go through layouts?
I have a class called ScreenView, it derives from View (e.g. public class ScreenView extends View).
I wanted to display text into it, labels, images etc..
On an iPhone it's trivial, simply create my objects and use addSubview method ; you can embed any UI objects into another. Most UI toolkits work that way too.
Problem with layouts is that I haven't found an easy way to properly position a subview (say a text view) in a given location of the enclosing View. I want one to contain the other...
I was hoping I had missed something in the documentation (which is far from being intuitive that's for sure) and I could do something like myView.addView(subview). But it ain't so :)
As a side question, what is the closest to iPhone's UILabel in the Android world?
A UILabel can contain a text or a graphic. Right now I've been using TextView and ImageView but they aren't anywhere as flexible when it comes to layout as a UILabel
Edit: Making my View inherit from ViewGoup instead, let me add subview..
However, I want to draw in my view. I found that when ScreenView extends ViewGroup, the onDraw function is never called then.
Something like:
CODE:..........
Would paint in yellow my view if ScreenView extends View ; but not if it extends ViewGroup.
How do you draw directly in the view then?

The reason for me to do this, I have created these 2 views in the beginning of the app. SO they are always present. But in some cases where i want only 1 view(which is surfaceview) and if i dont need the 2nd view(i.e, videoview), i am still getting a black patch at the palce where i have defned a videoview. want to get rid of this. Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to disable views/surfaces corresponding to them? If so how can we do this?

I have made a Custom Component in XML, consisting of a button with an imageview stacked on top of it:
<myapp.widget.ClearableCaptionedButton
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<Button
android:id="@+id/ccbutton_button"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center_vertical|left"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium"
android:background="@android:drawable/edit_text"/>
<ImageView
android:id="@+id/ccbutton_clear"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginRight="5dip"
android:layout_alignRight="@id/ccbutton_button"
android:layout_alignTop="@id/ccbutton_button"
android:layout_alignBottom="@id/ccbutton_button"/>
</myapp.widget.ClearableCaptionedButton>
Extract of java source code:
public class ClearableCaptionedButton extends RelativeLayout implements OnClickListener {
...
public ClearableCaptionedButton(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) { super(context, attrs);
// some stuff that works fine
} ..
protected void onFinishInflate() { super.onFinishInflate();
mButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.ccbutton_button);
mClear = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.ccbutton_clear);
mButton.setText(""); // error here: mButton == null
}
My problem is similar to this one. When I try to find the views inside the custom compound, findViewById returns null. But, as you can see, i already added super(context, attrs); to the constructor. I am using the custom component directly in xml layout, like this:
<LinearLayout>
<!-- some stuff -->
<myapp.widget.ClearableCaptionedButton
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
app:caption="to"/>
</LinearLayout>

I have a set of custom views that I would like to add to a LinearLayout object. However, the first object I add to the layout (I do this dynamically, during runtime) has a OnMeasure method that tries to get as much space as possible resulting in that it get's all the space LinearLayout object. This is correct behavior, but when I then add more objects following that I want the allocated area for the first object to decrease so the others will fit. As it is now, each following object will get zero space, and hence won't be visible.

I have a requirement to create a control similar to UITabBar in iPhone, which is to be present on every activity of my application. UITabBar essentially is a battery of buttons exhibiting a TAB like behavior: every button maps to an activity. I have two solutions for this: 1. In the layout XML for every activity, I insert a <LinearLayout><Button/><Button/><Button/></LinearLayout> element. And then have a common listener class that will handle the button clicks. So, every activity will have an instance of this listener. 2. To create a custom Widget extending LinearLayout class, put all the buttons as its static members and let it handle the button clicks. Include this custom control in every screen.

While researching how to create custom compound views in Android, I have come across this pattern a lot (example comes from the Jteam blog)I mostly understand how this is working, except for the part where inflate() is called. The documentation says that this method returns a View object, but in this example the author does not store the result anywhere. After inflation, how is the new View created fromt eh XML associated with this class? I thought about assigning it to "this", but that seems very wrong.

Is it possible to add a view dynamically that overlaps other views in the layout. I have Linear Layout defined for the activity. As part of the Layout I have a custom View. The content changes dynamically and sizes appropriately based on the content size, with fill_parent for width and wrap_content for height. But what I want is, dynamically take over the full screen and then based on a click go back to the normal mode. Is there a mode to display a view where - in it can overlap all other views in the layout?

I want to build my own custom view which should look like the Crysis-GUI.At first I designed a XML-based Layout and made it visible via the setContentView(int resid)-Method. Worked pretty well.But now I wan't to go a step further and draw in my Layout. So I created a new Class, let it extend View and overrode the onDraw()-Method. So far so good.But how can I still use my XML-Layout? I can't do setContentView anymore, so how could the same effect be achieved?

I've successfully implemented onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for my main activity to save and restore certain critical components across screen orientation changes.
But it seems, my custom views are being re-created from scratch when the orientation changes. This makes sense, although in my case it's inconvenient because the custom view in question is an X/Y plot and the plotted points are stored in the custom view.
Is there a crafty way to implement something similar to onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for a custom view, or do I need to just implement methods in the custom view which allow me to get and set its "state"?

I am on Android 2.1 and I have one multi column Custom listview Using BaseAdapter with an editable edittext at the end of the listview. If the data in the listview do not contain the data of user choice then user should be able to enter data. If the data is already there in the list user will be able to select the data using custom selector. If a selection is made in the list view and user wanted to enter data in the text field at the bottom after selection then the marker in the list view should be unselected. I tried to use onclick() method on edit text using click listener. First time when it is clicked, edit text is getting focus and onclick() method is not fired. And when it is clicked second time, onclick() method is fired and notifyDataSetChanged() method is called. I tried to call the notifyDataSetChanged() method from the Focus Listener, list view selection is gone in my first attempt and edit text is not receiving any data input from the keyboard (frozen).
