Android :: Slow Searching In Large Sqlite Database ?

Jun 30, 2009

I have a large(ish) database - around 30MB, created offline with 400,000 rows. Doing a simple select (name LIKE pattern%) and then showing the query in a listview takes about 10 seconds. I tried indexing that field but no difference. If this is normal I will just use a raw data file and do a binary search myself. If this is not normal I hope someone has a hint or two to what might be wrong.

Android :: Slow searching in large sqlite database ?

Searching SQLite Database And Listview?

Jul 8, 2013

PHP Code:

public class Namelist extends Activity {
ListView listView;
DbManager db;

[Code]....

That's all on how to get the content of my database. my question is "HOW CAN I GET THE SELECTED RECORD IN A DATABASE SHOWING IN LISTVIEW USING LIKE STATEMENT SEARCHING FROM FIRSTNAME OR IN A LASTNAME"

Android :: SQLite Database Slow Insertion

Aug 17, 2010

I need to parse a fairly large XML file (varying between about a hundred kilobytes and several hundred kilobytes), which I'm doing using Xml#parse(String, ContentHandler). I'm currently testing this with a 152KB file.During parsing, I also insert the data in an SQLite database using calls similar to the following: getWritableDatabase().insert(TABLE_NAME, "_id", values). All of this together takes about 80 seconds for the 152KB test file (which comes down to inserting roughly 200 rows). When I comment out all insert statements (but leave in everything else, such as creating ContentValues etc.) the same file takes only 23 seconds. Is it normal for the database operations to have such a big overhead? Can I do anything about that?

Android :: Which Is Faster When Reading Large Amounts Of Dat /: XML Or SQLite

Jul 26, 2010

I will be developing a dictionary app for both Android and iPhone. The data will be embedded within the app, and it consists out of approximately 100000 words, with genus and plural form. Is it better to use a SQLite database or can I just stick to XML? Somehow SQLite sounds more efficient, but I thought let's just ask.

Android :: Inserting Large Volumes Of Data Into SQLite

Sep 2, 2009

I need to insert approximately one million rows of data (spread over 4 tables) - each row has one or two numeric fields, and two or three text fields (normally quite short). Single-column indexes on all the fields. After doing some tests on the emulator with a small test set, I extrapolated (assuming the last row will be inserted with a similar speed to the first row) my results to figure out that this would take about 15 hours (I have a Core 2 Duo running Vista). However, then I tried running the small test set on my Hero and I was surprised to see it run more than four times faster. I would guess it would take about 3 hours on the Hero. Alternatively, I could make the pre-populated database available as a download on the first run but this is likely to be a 120MB download. I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with: 1. SQLite performance on the actual device being 4-5 times faster compared to the emulator - is this normal/expected? 2. Do the figures above generally sound fast/slow/normal (sorry this is so vague)? 3. From a user perspective - would it be best to provide a 120MB download or a 3 hour "first-time initialisation" step (plus 6MB download)?

Android :: SQLite Handle Large Amount Of Data?

Jun 26, 2010

I will be making a mobile application in Android. My application is like Google Map's Get Direction feature, but a lot more complex, so I need to store data about points in the map. So I'm worried that SQLite may not be able to handle these large amount of data(or considering the limited storage of the phone). I have no background in SQLite so please bear with me.

At some point, usually after completing the data collection rounds, the local sqlite db is to be synchronized to a remote sybase db on the server.Any suggestions as to how this could be achieved or engineered as a solution? Or even better, are there alternatives to synchronizing data in such an application?

Android :: Scrolling Large Image - Working Good But Slow

Nov 12, 2009

For a project, I'm displaying an image with sizes 800 x 600 and I've implemented my custom scrolling (horizontal and vertical) - which is works fine. However, my problem is that it's not fast enough. If you continuously move your finger on screen for instance, scrolling is not responding fast enough. There is a lag and you need to wait (say 400-500ms) for new scrolled image to be loaded. Now below I described how I implemented scrolling and my question is that
- How can I make it faster, if possible - Is there any other better way to implement this.

My custom scrolling solution:
* I have a Main activity, SurfaceView and a thread
* In main activity, I'm using GestureDetector and override onScroll method.
* In onScroll method of activity, I'm passing values to SurfaceView's "handleScrolling" method.
* In "handleScrolling" method, I'm calculating proper values and using "newImage = Bitmap.createBitmap(myImage, starX, stopY, SCREEN_WIDTH, SCREEN_HEIGHT)"; to create a new, "scrolled" image.
* Then in thread loop, I'm drawing this "newImage" to canvas.

Android :: Way To Deploy Large Database With Droid Application

Feb 11, 2010

I am in need to write an application for Android devices that needs to access a large (~200MB) database.
What would be the best way to do this? Can I just stick the database in the assets folder? I have read of various limitations that apply to the entire application size and to individual resources within, especially on some devices... What are exactly these limits?

Is there any way to do this apart from a post-installation download from an external server?

Android :: Read LARGE Sqlite File To Be Copied Into Emulator - Or Device From Assets Folder

May 28, 2010

I guess many people already read this article:

Using your own SQLite database in Android applications: http://www.reigndesign.com/blog/using-your-own-sqlite-database-in-android-applications/comment-page-2/#comment-12368

However it's keep bringing IOException at

CODE:.............

I'am trying to use a large DB file. It's as big as >8MB. I built it using sqlite3 in Mac OS X, inserted UTF-8 encoded strings (for I am using Korean), added android_meta table with ko_KR as locale, as instructed above.

However, When I debug, it keeps showing IOException at

CODE:..............

I suspect it's caused by trying to read a big file. If not, I have no clue why.
I tested the same code using much smaller text file, and it worked fine.

Can anyone help me out on this? I've searched many places, but no place gave me the clear answer, or good solution. Good meaning efficient or easy.

I will try use BufferedInput(Output)Stream, but if the simpler one cannot work, I don't think this will work either.

Can anyone explain the fundamental limits in file input/output in Android, and the right way around it, possibly?

WITH MORE DETAIL:

Android :: Super Slow Apps Caused By Large Number Of Unending AsyncTasks

Aug 11, 2010

I have no idea, but my app is stalling sometimes completely (not responding to touching the screen) I thought I was following all the rules for threading, but my app is apparently slowing down the Sprint EVO! I have never used an app as slow as my own. I don't get an ANR dialog, though I think I probably should get getting one. I have no idea how to make this application run like every other app I've ever used -- Not freezing. Is it not a good idea to have one HttpClient and keep a static reference to it for all Activities that want to use it? I used to create a new one each time, and thought that changing it to one sped it up. None of my AsyncTasks ever end. If I go to Activity A -> B -> C -> D the first time it will be smooth. I can press back but when I get back to A, its completely frozen, not responding to anything. That when I took that screenshot. I really have no clue what I am doing wrong. Should I manually kill my AsyncTasks on Activity.onPause()?

Android :: Use Own Sqlite Database?

Mar 5, 2010

I put my database field in "assets" folder. And use the code from this blog to copy the database to "/data/data/my_packname/databases/", (This copy code i run it in the onCreate() method when i run this app) then use select * from ... to get data. But it gives me the exception: no such table. Someone told me that if i am attempting to copy the file in SQLiteOpenHelper's onCreate(), it's too late. So the copy file code can not copy the complete file. So i need to use adb or ddms to pull the database first? So, Anyone can teach me how to use my own databse?

Android :: Necessary To Close SQLite Database?

Jul 22, 2010

Is it really necessary to close an SQLite database that your activity has opened (database is in local memory or on SD card)? I would think it would be good practice, but I noticed that the Android samples such as the Notepad tutorial and SearchableDictionary sample do not do this. I've also seen sample code where the database is consistently opened, read from, and closed, but that would seem to add unnecessary overhead.
