I'm trying to create a basic AlertDialog using an activity with a theme of Theme.Dialog.What I want is for there to be a horizontal bar between the title and the message. However, the bar is not being resized correctly. Rather than being the width of the activity, the bar is the width of the message text. This means that if the activity is being expanded by the message, then the bar will fill the whole activity, so it looks correct. However, if the message width is less than the activity width, the bar only displays above the part of the activity with the text. I've tried every single combination of "fill_parent" and "wrap_content" that I can think of, and none of those work.I've also tried using RelativeLayout and placing the bar above the message text, but that also doesn't work. If I use the RelativeLayout approach and set the bar to fill_parent, it causes the activity to expand to fill the whole screen width, which is also undesirable. Ideally, I want the text placed, the activity width computed, and the bar resized to that width (without affecting it). Is there some way to flag a view to fill the parent view but not to affect its size?

can someone tell me if I can change the activity animation by applying a theme?I know the change will not be global, but is it even possible to make the change to be applied within my own app? For example, if i have an app that does not want to standard slide in/out animation on start/ exit, is it possible to change them?

I have a problem in the Preferences Activity, in the main preferences the theme shows ok, but if I get to a sub preference, the theme gets messy, it is not white as it should, it is all dark, and the font is black so you can't see much, and when I start clicking on any items they will get sometimes white as they should but revert to black soon after. This is only happens on 2.1, in both the real device and emulator. Tested on the emulator running 1.6 and it was working correctly.

I need to launch a Dialog from home screen widget, so I created an Activity with android: theme=" @android: style/Theme.Dialog"The problem is, that I would like make it look like standard dialog window ( buttons on the gray background, font and text size, paddings etc),Is there some standard way (theme?) to make it look like standard system dialogs? Or do I have to imitate it in my own layout?

I want to start an activity as a dialog, which can be simply done by: <activity android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Dialog">
But I want to do control the dialog, so I've to do it programmatically. Basically I want to modify this property of dialog: mCanceledOnTouchOutside = true
This will make the dialog cancel itself when touched outside of it's bounds. (Basically I want to replicate the popup behavior). The issue is I can't simply create a dialog and set it's layout since I need a call to activity (to initialized datasets)

I have two activities. A and B. A starts B. Both are running in the screen and both are visible. Say now B is visible.
On a special key press, I want to bring the A to the front and make it active. The problem I am facing is when the special key is pressed, another instance of A is launched and the new instance is brought to the front.
But I want the original A to come to the front. I want to make this change in the framework layer rather than application specific by using the singleInstance theme in the launchMode in AndroidManifest file.
Please help me in this regard as this is really urgent for me. Any inputs will be really valuable for me.

I'm trying to have my home-screen application register itself as the default home-screen so the user is not prompted with the IntentResolver's list of all the available home-activities.
This is my code:
CODE:.................
I have the android.permission.SET_PREFERRED_APPLICATIONS set in the manifest. After executing the code above, the logs claim things have been added like expected (same logs as when I tick off "Make default" from IntentResolver's list). However, when I proceed by clicking home, the list still shows up and the logs say:
CODE:.....................
So it seems the resolver deletes the default entry. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a security measure? What are the ideas behind this?

I have a form with several Views on it, the last one is a Spinner that is bound to an adapter to get it's data from a Web Server via a POST request, at the end I append an additional entry for "Other...". If this option is selected on the spinner, a new EditText View at the bottom where the user enters a custom value, I've managed to get the EditText View to show on the screen, but it's positioned at the very top, over my other Views and I can't seem to find the way to make it appear at the bottom, below the Spinner as I want it to, here is the code I have so far:
EditText suggestCarrierField = new EditText(getBaseContext());
suggestCarrierField.setLayoutParams(new ViewGroup.LayoutParams(
ViewGroup.LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));
suggestCarrierField.setHint("Suggest your carrier");
((AbsoluteLayout) findViewById(R.id.createAccountView)).addView(suggestCarrierField);
((AbsoluteLayout) findViewById(R.id.createAccountView)).invalidate();

I use themes in my apps, which generally just extend android:Theme and then set a bunch of styles. I use dialogs made from layouts, but since I set the theme for the application, they have inherited all of the regular styles and no longer carry a border, etc. My question is: How do I say, "I want everything to use this theme which extends Theme, except dialogs, which should use this other theme that extends Theme.Dialog"? It seems like that's how things work by default but when you set the theme to your own, you lose the dialog theme!

I've extended Theme.Dialog to use a different color as per the sample in the ApiDemos project but for some reason it does not use the theme properly in my project. I created a new project and it works perfectly fine there. The main problem here is that it does not show as floating in my project. Instead, it sets the rest of the screen black except for what would be the dialog window, where it uses the correct colors, etc. Any ideas? I am beating my head against the wall here.

I want to be able to show the Battery Info activity in my app, which shows things such as the exact level, battery health, etc.I'm not sure how I can get it, though a few applications such as Power Manager, Any Cut, etc. show this screen as well. I found in the source code of Settings this intent in a file called testing_settings.xml,But I don't know how to use it. I would guess from the fact that Any Cut has a list of activities, that a list of said activities exists somewhere, and therefore an easy way to access them exists, but I haven't found it.

So I have an app with Activity A. The layout on the activity is dynamic genearted. So it's possible that on Activity A a user hits a button that goes to "A" and the new page looks different, then a user clicks another button to go to "A" again. Now I have 2 Activities in the history stack. A, A, and currently on A. Is it possible that if a user clicks a button that the whole Activity stack is cleared in a scenario such as this?

I have a problem to start/create Activity in landscape mode. My Activity need to start in landscape mode and be used in landscape mode by users. So far, I used setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE) to force screen orientation of my Activity to landscape mode in onCreate() method.
In addition to this screen mode requirement, my application need to start another background thread in onResume() method, and this thread takes some seconds in order to finish an initialization process, and it is not desirable to to stop/restart this thread's service during the initialization process.
However setRequestedOrientation (ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE) forces my Activity restart in a very little while (means onCreate->onResume->onPause->onStop are executed twice at the first place). As a result, my background thread be stopped/restarted during the initialization process, and this makes me a mess at this moment.

Im writing a program that offers a quick reply dialog upon receipt of an SMS.
However, I am getting an unexpected result. When I receieve an SMS, the appropriate dialog activity comes up displaying the correct phone number and message, however there is a second activity behind it that is the 'default' activity in my program (it is what opens when i launch my application)
I do not want this second activity to come up. The quick reply activity should come up by itself over top of whatever the user was doing before.
The 'floating' activity:
CODE:.........
The call to the activity inside an onReceive()
CODE:..............
The Manifest:
