Android :: SMS-Based IM Apps?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to find a messenger app (or apps) that supports at a minimum AIM and Yahoo that *IS* SMS-based. Everything I can find on the app market is data based, and the lackluster battery life on my new Droid Incredible means I can't have an always-open data connection. I do, however, have an unlimited text messaging plan, so incurring SMS charges is precisely zero concern of mine.

Yes, I have a auto task killer. Yes, I know about eBuddy and its power-saving feature, but I hate the fact that messages might have an unacceptably-long 15-minute delay.

Android :: Do Profile-based Apps Exist

Jul 9, 2010

I'm very happy with how my Hero is set up at the moment, but there are a couple of apps which would make my life a lot easier, and conserve my precious battery!

Location based profiles using wirless location (and not GPS) I'd love to be able to arrive at work (or within 1500 meters of work) and my phone recognise this and switches on wifi, turn itself to silent, or choose a more suitable ringtone. I know that there are a few apps out there that use GPS to trigger, but this really kills my battery. I also know that wireless location isn't that accurate, but I'd only need ball park triggers anyway.

Time based app to kill certain features/apply airplane mode I've got Silent Time Pro, which switches my phone to silent at my bed time, but in an effort to conserve battery, is there an app which can also turn off wifi, GPS, auto updates and/or switch to airplane mode at specific times?

Does anyone have any recommendations for these, or do they not exist yet? Is it just me, or would these be quite handy apps?

If they don't exist, does anyone have a recommendation for me to set these profiles up manually, and maybe trigger them by means of a shortcut/widget? Obviously auto activation would be better, but I'm really trying to cut down on recharges, as it seems that my phones forever flashing orange at me!

Android :: Apps To Change Settings / Based On WiFi & Phone Number

Apr 10, 2010

I am looking for an app to do the following things. Change ringer setting when getting a call from a certain number. i.e. Turn the ringer on when I call it from my google voice number in case I loose it.Also, to run a script when connecting to a specific wifi network.I believe Locale can do at least the first one, but I was wondering if there were any cheaper apps to do this as I have no interest in the gps features of locale.

As the title says i'm new to the Android community, and i don't have much experience on the development side either. but i am very interested in getting started. I see that Android apps are based off of Java... So would it be better for me to learn Java before getting started with the SDK and eclipse? Or is it just the same to jump right in on App development and learn on the fly?

General :: Limiting Google-based Sync To Settings And Data Not Apps

Aug 28, 2013

I have a few Android devices and I play around with them quite a bit - flashing ROMs, etc. - and there's one thing that tends to irk me: When setting up my Google account on the device, there's the following checkbox:

Bring apps, settings and other data that you previously backup up to your Google account

Is there any way to limit this to settings and other data? I've used a TON of Android apps, and there are many, free and paid, that I have no desire to use again. I know a more robust solution (Titanium Backup, etc.) is better, but I'm not always running with root and I'm not looking for extremely-fine-grain control. I simply want to skip installing apps I haven't used in months! I know I could simply uninstall the apps, but there are a ton. I'm willing to uncheck the box if I can get a clear understanding of what I'll be missing if I don't sync. I don't have much time to experiment with it at the moment. For example, I don't remember if known wi-fi networks are synced (compare to Windows 8, which does - if I remember correctly - along with tons of other data)

General :: Backup Apps And System Data On Roms Based On Stock ICS And Restore To JB

Oct 21, 2012

I'm looking for an backup application which will allow me to backup my apps and system data on roms based on stock ICS and restore to JB and vice versa.

Titanium backup does the job but after restoring on a new rom I get a lot of fc's and none of the apps works. I cannot restore call log and text messages, accounts, etc.

There's a lot of backup apps, I know. But I would like to be sure that they work as they should. Any app which will do the job?

Android :: IPhone Or Android Apps That Use SMS Based Authentication?

Jun 1, 2010

What are some iPhone or Android applications that use SMS as their primary means of user authentication?I'm interested to see such apps in action. SMS-auth seems like a natural approach that is well-situated to mobile contexts.

The basic workflow is: to sign up,a user provides a phone number; the app calls a backend webservice which generates a signed URL and sends it to the phone number via an SMS gateway; the user receives the SMS, clicks the link, and is thus verified and logged in. This results in a very strong user identity that is difficult to spoof yet fairly easy. It can be paired with a username or additional account attributes as needed for the product requirements.Despite the advantages, this does not seem to be in much use - hence my question. My initial assumption is that this is because products and users are wary of asking for / providing phone numbers, which users consider sensitive information. That said, I hope this becomes an increasingly more commonplace approach.

Feb 12, 2009

I need to have my view resize itself based on the orientation. After extensive googling (maybe i was using the wrong terms) I could find nothing telling me how to detect when the orientation was changed. Here is my layout file: how do I have it automatically resize itself? I want each item (the EditText and the WebView) to fill half the screen (not counting the title/notification bars). I set the height to absolute and not wrap_content because wrap_content defaults to 1 line for EditText and nothing for WebView. and fill_parent has the EditText on top of the WebView.

Android :: Clarity On Wi-Fi Based Application

Jul 30, 2010

I am trying to create an application based on Wi-Fi and i would need some suggestion on the same , The scenario am trying is,say, when a user with our android application enters a specific Wi-fi Hotspot, i need an activity to be invoked from my app. Basically I can have a service running as a part of my app and whenever i scan for that specific hot-spot i can call up the activity , BUT , i need to do the otherway round.. i mean instead of running a service in the mobile and utilizing its resource, i want the Wi-fi Hotspot to monitor and if the device is inside the vicinity it needs to invoke a notification from which the activity can be invoked... Few things that i would like to understand is I) When a wifi hot-spot is detected in our android phone what actually happens at the Wi-Fi Hot spot end ?? 2) When our device obtains an IP address from the wi-fi n/w will our device's unique ID or its equivalents be available at the wi-fi provider end ?

Android :: PNG Quality In WebView Based App

May 10, 2010

I am using WebView to display html content in an app. One of the pages has a rather large PNG image. The image is large and detailed on purpose because the idea is to use it as a map and allow users to zoom in to see the detail. Unfortunately, when the image is displayed with WebView, the quality is horrific. I am assuming that WebView is attempting to do some image optimization to reduce the size of the graphic. Is there anyway to prevent it from doing this? I don't want the image to lose any of its quality. You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. There are quite a few cloud-based storage services out there now (Google Docs, DropBox, etc.), but none seem to have clients for the Android phones. I searched the market, and I did find a few 3rd party apps for things like DropBox, but most had mediocre reviews. Android :: Shared Library Which Is Not JNI Based

Apr 22, 2010

I am developing a library for Android applications which does not use native code (JNI). I have tried suppling the library as an external jar in my Android projects but this method does not include the library contents in the apk and thus throws class not found errors when run in the emulator or device. I have also tried creating the library as an Android project in itself and this does work, but only for public static properties (not methods). With the library and application both being in separate apk's I can see that the VM notices references to the library and can read some properties, but when an attempt to instantiate a class in the library is executed I get class not found even though I can read the public static properties from it.

I realize that Davlik byte code is not the same as Java byte code but I am having trouble even finding good information about how to solve what would seem to be a very simple issue in Android. I am looking into the old PlatformLibrary stuff right now but I am not convinced this will work either since the sample has been removed from the Android site.
