Android :: Replace Existing TabHost Content / Activities?

Nov 16, 2009

Since the TabHost API does not offer a way to change existing views or activities, what is the preferred means to replace an existing tab?

I only know of: clearing the tabs and adding them again. Is there an alternative? Or is this really not provided by design?

Android :: Using TabHost With Dynamically Built - Pre-existing Views

May 25, 2009

I have a remove assistant app, which allows customers to perform a subset of functions of a desktop application, untethered. Results are communicated back & forth via messages left at a license server. In order to have a single source for the logic of the assistant, yet run on multiple platforms (Swing, MIDP, & Android), I write a driver composed of Database, Network, & Display pieces.

The Android driver is nearly complete, but I run into a brick wall when it comes to Tabs. All views are instanced calling code, not XML defined. I already have the view before I try to add it.

I tried sub- classing TabHost:

CODE:.................

As is shown in the code, it errors in setup. Looking further down in setup() I will also get this exception too: Your TabHost must have a FrameLayout whose id attribute is 'android.R.id.tabcontent

Is there a way to trick setup() into instancing me mTabWidget & mTabContent members?

Android :: Creation Of Activities From Tabhost

May 14, 2010

I have a TabActivity. Within this activity (in the onCreate method) I create a TabHost and a TabSpec and do a tabSpectSearch.setContent(intenSearch); The Indent is created using intentSearch = new Intent().setClass(this, MyActivity.class);

As far as I already found out the class MyActivity is instantiated when I select the tab, to which it is connected. Is there a way from my TabActivity to force the creation of all activities (all tabs) at once?

Android :: Trap In TabHost When AsyncTask Delays Set Content View At Activity Startup

Nov 3, 2009

I've got a tab host activity started from a home screen shortcut. When my application starts it downloads information from a server using an AsyncTask. In the onPostExecute method of the AsyncTask I call setContentView to display the TabHost.When I start the homescreen shortcut by tapping on the shortcut using my finger everything works as expected, I download the information from the server and display the TabHost with the information in the tabs. However starting the application by navigating to the shortcut with the mouse wheel and then clicking on the shortcut with the mouse wheel leads to a trap in the framework code as soon as my application starts. This looks like a simple fix since mCurrentView is null at the time that this method is called - can this issue be addressed? Does anyone know of any workarounds?

Android :: How To Set New Content In Existing Tabs Upon Menu Button?

May 20, 2010

I recently started Android programming and was working on my first program which displays a historic text document, sectioned by tabs via TabHost.I have limited my program to one activity and merely used setContent in my TabSpec's to switch between different XML views.The document has both unedited and corrected versions of the text for which I have built text views to accommodate. I wanted to implement the standard menu to have buttons to "view corrected" and "view original" and switch the content of the tabs which have changes (without altering the tabs or their indicators).I've read on the TabHost API and there is no way to edit existing tab content with setContent() of TabSpec; and AFAIK TabWidget only affects the actual tabs, not the content that is displayed upon pressing them.I've thought about creating a new class which extended TabHost and super() all of the original methods, while including one more which updated the mTabSpec list.

Android :: Possible To Write Custom Content Provider For Existing System Database?

Dec 9, 2009

Not sure of the absolute utility of this but seems as though it should be possible and useful. Can you extend ContentProvider to provide URIs representing new queries (i.e., joins across multiple tables not specified by existing URIs) for an existing system database? The alternative seems to be that I need to write a series of cursor queries then join them -- seems like a lot of unnecessary code duplication.

I have been trying this for the contacts database as an exercise, but no love so far. The crux seems to be that I cannot open a database in another package during the setup phase. Am I just completely out in left field here? It's possible as I am new to both Java and Android.

Android :: Switching Content Providers For Same Content URI

Aug 12, 2009

This may seem like a stupid question but I need to be sure. I was wondering if it was possible to pro-grammatically change the Content Provider used when making a query given a Content URI. The reason being I need to know if it's possible to force the Calendar/Contacts applications to read from a different database via a different Content Provider temporarily while my application is running, so that I can reuse those applications to display my own data. Since the Content URI s are hard coded in each of these applications the only way it might be possible is if we could somehow temporarily change the Content Provider used for a given URI. I know this probably isn't possible, I just need to show it isn't. Could someone confirm this can't be done?

Android :: TabHost Slow On Orientation Changes

Nov 24, 2009

I currently have a TabHost with 3 tabs.The content of each tab is an activity. The first and second tab make HTTP connections.The first tab still uses the UI thread (which i'm changing) so it would explain the slow orientation change since it's creating a fresh activity and making all those connections again. What I don't understand is why if I am on say Tab 3 which makes no connections at all does changing the orientation take such a long time (up to 5 seconds).In playing around with the TabWidget I noticed something that may be related.

Android : Restart An Activity Within A Tabhost?

Jan 13, 2010

I've searched and I know it seems some people frown upon using activities within tabs, but moving past that...how would I restart a tabbed activity while still keeping the tabs visible? I have an activity in a tab, I use the menu to create a new activity to update the tab's activity displayed info, when I return from the menu activity I want the new information to be displayed in the tab's activity. I am using startActivityForResult() from the menu choice, but when I return and try to restart the activity...it wipes out the tabs above(I guess as expected, but I want to re-launch the refreshed activity within the tab).

Creating the tabs:

TabHost host = getTabHost();
Intent home_intent = new Intent(constants.HOME_ACTION,
null, this, homeTab.class);
Intent inbox_intent = new Intent(constants.INBOX_ACTION,
null, this, inboxTab.class);
Intent stats_intent = new Intent(constants.STATS_ACTION, null,
this, infoTab.class);

host.addTab(host.newTabSpec(constants.HOME_TAG)
.setIndicator(getText(R.string.home_label),
getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.icon))
.setContent(home_intent));
host.addTab(host.newTabSpec(constants.INBOX_TAG)
.setIndicator(getText(R.string.inbox_label),
getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.icon))
.setContent(inbox_intent));
host.addTab(host.newTabSpec(constants.STATS_TAG)

Android : Content Provider - No Link Between Content Provider And Its CONTENT_URI Declared In Another Class

Mar 1, 2010

I am having a hard time understanding content providers. In the notepad example and others, the content provider never even declares its CONTENT_URI anywhere inside itself, yet the docs say to publicly declare this. It's declared in a different class. So when an activity queries a content provider with a CONTENT_URI, how does Android know which one I want. I see no link between a content provider and its CONTENT_URI declared in another class.

I also don't how to think about intents and content providers. I know that you don't call an intent on a content provider. But an activity queries a content provider without an intent, and an activity has a mimetype attribute in the manifest that would seem to tie it to a content provider.
