Android :: Emulator Loses Network / Connection Error

Jul 16, 2010

I wonder if anybody has ran into the issue where a running emulator would lose network connection all at a sudden for no obvious reason. And I am sure the computer running the JVM is still online.Restarting the emulator seems to fix the issue but it's been a major PITA for me as it interrupts the work flow.I am using 2.1 SDK 7.

Android :: Development Machine

Nov 24, 2010

With the latest SDK release, and the ability to download separate platforms releases into the SDK, the hardware resources required to develop for Android have increased significantly. Assuming that the developer targets all currently available seven platforms - that could take your dev machine to its knees. Taken alone the 'Android SDK Content Loader' takes nearly two minutes on a dual-core machine with 2GB memory.

As the title suggest the reason for creating this wiki is for everyone to list their development hardware configurations, and thus determine what is a well-suited machine for Android development.

The secondary reason for the wiki is that I'm trying to get my employer to provide me with a decent machine for development as I'm currently forced to work on a nearly 4 year old randomly-built machine, and expected to deliver great results. However, the reality is that my system keeps running out of memory, and I can hardly get a chance to write a few lines of code in between the numerous crashes.

Android :: Sharing Machine For Development

Dec 10, 2009

We have a fast and powerful machine(Ubuntu 64bit) and we are sharing it for Android development. But when running multiple eclipse (with ADT) instances (by multiple users), we are getting the following error:

Could not open Selected VM debug port (8700). Make you do not have another instance of DDMS or of the eclipse plugin running. If it is being used by something else, choose a new port number in the preferences.

And some of the process names are not shown. It shows a bug with red- circle and a question mark instead.

I tried to change the port number under windows-preferences-Android- DDMS-Base local debugger port to 8800, etc. but it does not seem to help. (closed and reopened eclipse)

I ignored this, selected the process and it shows 8607/8700 (I found the process ID I want to debug using adb shell, ps)

And then I tried debugging this. It throws "failed to connect to remote VM"

Is it just not possible for multiple developers to debug different Android applications using multiple eclipse instances at the same time? If it is possible, can somebody please tell how we can do that?

BTW, it did not allow me to launch emulator, while somebody else is running one. I had to change permission to /tmp/android folder.

Android :: Run On Virtual Machine For Development

Jul 15, 2010

Currently I am using Android emulator for development, but it is very slow. I am looking for some android port that can run on real CPU.

For example I installed this product http://www.android-x86.org/documents/installhowto on VMware, and it seems to work much faster, but I have no idea how to setup network connection here.

The question is if some one is using alternative android setup for development, instead of emulator? If so, a link to configure instructions would be great.

Android :: C Development - Virtual Machine - Allowed

Apr 4, 2009

I'm the lead developer of TotalCross, a virtual machine that's just like the one used in Android, and targetted for small devices. Currently, using TotalCross, you write programs completely cross- platform among Palm OS 5, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows 32, Windows CE (2,3,4,5,6) and Java-enabled platforms.

We plan to port TotalCross to Android, but i'm concerned about the legal way. I'm aware that there may be hack C APIs for Android, but will these APIs allow the users to sell their applications in a legal fashion?

Btw, what is legal and what's not legal in Android? I could easily port our VM to Android if there were a standard C api on it. However, all i see is Java APIs. I could also port TotalCross to run over the Java API, but i'm concerned about speed. I believe our VM is faster than the one in Android (actually, it is a couple times faster than the BlackBerry VM).

General :: No Network Timeout When Connection Lost On Device But Works In Emulator

Feb 14, 2013

I'm developing an App that sends keep-alive packets to its server to ensure the connection is still alive.

The server is java based and thus easily to run. I run the server on a virtual machine (Windows 7). After my App is connected and the first keep-alive packet is received (it displays a message in its console output) I disable the network interface in Windows. This step is very important because by disabling it, there is no way to send any packet back to the client informing it about network changes.

The clients are configured to send every 25 seconds a keep-alive packet, so you don't need to wait long.

When you use the sample JavaClient on Windows 7 it takes less than a minute after the keep-Alive packet and an exception is thrown which triggers reconnection (which currently can't occur). This is the expected behaviour.

When you use the sample Android App on an emulator (tested Android version 2 and 4) it is the same behaviour. So in less than a minute after the keep-alive packet it recognises that the connection is dead, throws an exception, this triggers reconnection.

Problem is now when this App runs on a real device (tested several, Xpearia Arc S, one Cyanogen Mod 4 on Galaxy S3 and my Galaxy S3). I've waited 5 minutes, but there was no exception. This behaviour is reproducable.

Since this is a sample App, it uses no wakelock or service, so to test it is important to have it in foreground all the time (don't switch to other Apps or homescreen) and increase your display timeout to a few minutes to ensure that it doesn't go off. Use Logcat-Output to get informed whats happening, because there is no output in the App itself.

Now Sample-Code is in the attachement. Something had gone wrong. The Code consists of 3 Eclipse projects which you can easily import.

Android :: Multiple Development Environments On Single Machine - Problem Changing Default 8700 Port In ADT/DDMS

Feb 3, 2010

I am trying to set up multiple Android development environments on single Linux Debian machine. Everything works fine for one user. But whenever second user on the same machine tries to launch Eclipse (with ADT) there is an error displayed, that 8700 port is being used. Therefore, the second user is unable to debug. I have researched this issue myself and tried following solutions, but I am yet unsuccessful: 1) I have changed the DDMS port in Eclipse, for the second user to 8740 (Window -> Preferences -> Android -> DDMS -> Base local debugger port). No use: Eclipse still opens 8700 port for listening (showed by netstat and strace). 2) I have run the DDMS before running Eclipse, changed the port in it to be 8740 (File -> Preferences -> Debugger -> Port of selected VM). Not handy to have DDMS running outside Eclipse, Eclipse still opens 8700 port for listening. 3) Tried looking in the source code of ADT, found the reference where the 8700 port is passed and opened, it looks ok though and leaves me without a clue. 4) I have found several similar threads, but none of them helped my case (piled below for reference): 4.1) http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...
4.2) [url]4.3) [url}

Android :: Connecting Emulator In Another Machine

Aug 26, 2010

I need to test my android app 24h day and I have 3 ubuntu boxes to do it. I would like to connect my development system (MOTODEV Studio 1.3) to a Remote Device.

Well, the interface ask me about ip for machine and port to connect to.

But it doesn't. I found that the adb sever on remote seems not to listen to external ports, only internal loopback, making connections machine-machine impossible.

Could it be true? If so, why there is a section on Device to connect to Android Remote Device on MOTODEV Studio?

I've found an explanation and a workaround in this post (http://rxwen.blogspot.com/2009/11/adb-for-remote-connections.html) but it seems complicated and post's links doesn't work, so I'm confused whether there is a solution to do that.

But when host creates the socket using "10.0.2.15:xxxxx" (xxxxx is the port which emulator is listenning), it doesn't work. I think maybe the address"10.0.2.15" goes wrong. Is it a local address behind the "virtual router" and the host can't find? If so, how to find a correct IP address of emulator?

Android :: Android To Open Network Connection On Specified Network Interface - Network Type

Mar 6, 2009

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .

I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.

If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.

There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int, int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?

Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

Android :: Setup Android Emulator To Access The LAN Of Host Machine

Jun 9, 2010

I would like to access a web service provided by one of the machines on my LAN from the android emulator.

If the service was running on the same machine where the emulator is running (called host), I could add a network redirection and access the 10.0.2.2 (host loopback interface in the emulator) with the correct port.

However it is running on another machine on the LAN. I guess I could add another redirection on the host additionally to the above one (would have to fight with iptables though ... ), but does a more simple solution exist ?

Android :: Programatically Selection Of 3G Network Connection In G1?

I'm working on some data transmission program and current it works alright on WIFI connection.

However, I understand that if I am in an environment where there are both 3G and WIFI coverage... the phone will (by default) be turned onto the WIFI network connection.

However, if for some reasons, I wish to be connected directly to 3G (e.g. 3G is more stable in public WIFI area).... is it possible to do so programatically on the Android phone? If i'm not wrong, it's possible using the ConnectionManager API, am I right?

May i ask if anyone has done something like that and don't mind sharing the code snippets to do so , or point me to the right direction for this?

Android :: Emulator DNS / Network Posted Fix?

Jan 24, 2010

I've read many postings about problems getting the Android emulator DNS to work properly in certain situations. I have a simple app that makes an HTTP connection to a server on the Internet. If I use an IP address using the latest version of the emulator it works fine. If I use the domain name it throws a java.net.UnknownHostException: Host is unresolved: exception. The identical code works fine on any actual device. Has anyone figured out how to fix this situation? I've spent days trying everything, from using proxy servers to setting up and running a DNS server on my development machine. This situation/experience is a shame, because the emulator seems like such an impressive and well thought out collection of tools for developing and testing apps. However, it is currently useless to me. Is there anyone who can help?
