Android :: How To Get Android Widget's Size After Layout Is Calculated
May 19, 2010
I have a layout which specifies sizes of widgets in relative dimension, for example:
CODE:..............
Immediately after onCreate, I want to know how much is the height of the ImageView. How to do that?
If I call getHeight() in onCreate, I get 0.
I have also tried imageView.postDelayed, it works on 2.1 emulator but fails on 1.5 emulator (I got 0, too).
Finally, I tried to create a Handler, and then I call handler.postDelayed with 10 ms delay. It works in both 2.1 and 1.5 emulator, but failed when I start the program in eclipse debugger (So, I conclude that using the delay doesn't guarantee that the getting of the height happens after the imageview is layout-ted.)

I am trying to make a widget to show on the home screen(s). My problem is lets say I set my icon to 30x30 when I load the widget on the screen the Icon is the correct size but the layout itself takes up a lot more space than what is actually needed. This means that I can't really place my widget next to other icons on the screen. Its like the bounding box is 3 times bigger than the content that fills it.
Here is my XML
[CODE]
I have tried wrap_content and other width/height settings but nothing seems to reduce the "Box" around my widget content. I clicked on my ATK widget and started to drag it around on my HTC Aria and it shows the bounding box around the widget and that one is the same size of the content inside same with all the other widgets on my screens.

The Android Market Developer Console shows two numbers for your submitted application; "total" and "active installs".What exactly does the "active installs" number mean?Is it affected by application upgrades? Does that yield a "total" of 1000 because the APK was downloaded 1000 times but an "Active Installs" of 500 (50%) because, in the end, only 500 people are running the app? Does an upgrade get counted as an uninstall followed by an install?

Currently these button wrap according to their labels so have different widths. But I want these button equi size. Means all three button should have same width (without using fixed widths).

I am trying to develop an app for which I want multiple screen support. I have read the Android article on Best practices for Multiple Screen Support. As per the article we have to follow 3 important things:
1. Mention support for different screen sizes (large, medium and small) and any density in AndroidManifest.xml.
2. Place images of 3 dpi's (120, 160, 240) in 3 folders res/ldpi, res/ mdpi and res/hdpi.
3. In layout's the dimension should be mentioned in "dip" units. Then Android will take care of the scaling on its own.
I have implemented all these points in my project. The images are picked up correctly from the appropriate folders. But the arrangements of the controls in not same. e.g. I ran the app on three emulators 1. Resolution 240*320 dpi 120. 2. Resolution 240*320 dpi 160. 3. Resolution 240*320 dpi 240. (All the emulator have same resolution but different density). The problem is the position of the controls is not same on all the three emulator. As per my understanding if the android:layout_marginLeft and android:layout_marginTop are mentioned in "dip" then this problem should not occur. As the density of the emulator increases the controls get placed more towards the right. Is it necessary that I provide layouts for all combinations of dimensions and density i.e. in layout-small, layout-large, layout- medium, layout-long,layout-notlong?

Every time that I want to do a Layout, I'm getting a black layout preview then I can drop stuff on it, that's ok, but how can I change the size of that blank surface (xml). The question came because I set a folder layout-large and then when I add a new layout.xml to that folder it came with the same size, as a layout-normal.

I define once in my /xml/widget.xml the minwidth. but what can i do when I need to inflate different sizes from my widget layouts for 1 one my 3 widgets thats fine, but the last 2 widgets would just need one icon size, so they always need the width of 2 icons. also when I make minwidth smaller.. it fits with the other 2 widgets but the large widget come cutted. How to solve that. I cant believe to create a total new receiver and a new /xml/widget2.xml just for another size?!

It seems so simple: I need a stopwatch widget, size 2x2. Just need it to be able to start and stop, laptimes would be a nice to have but no requirement. I don't need it to be very high resolution, seconds would be good enough (for my application, even minutes would suffice!). Any tips?

Is it possible to change widget size at run-time? I want to provide users with an option to chose size of the widget from configuration utility but can't figure out how to do that. The only way to specify size of the widget seems to be to explicitly do that in AndroidManifest.xml

Whenever I add an EditText widget to the layout of my home screen widget (confusing how the term "widget" is being used twice in the Android lexicon :-/ ), I receive the "Problem Loading Widget" error box.
Here is the layout I'm attempting; if you remove the EditText, it works...
CODE:.....................
Now, the Google Search home screen widget has an EditText, so it's obviously legal to implement.

Let's say that I have two layouts for a widget: Layout1 and Layout2. The default for the widget is Layout1, but I allow the user to choose which layout they want the widget to be. So if the user changes to Layout2, how do I programmatically change the layout to Layout2? There isn't a setContentView method for widgets like there is for Activities.

I have this really annoying problem:In my widget, i would like to change the background by code. I noticed on the Google doc than I can easily change the background of an Imageview: remoteViews.setImageViewResource (R.id.my_iv, R.drawable.my_bg);Ok, too easy, i want to change now the Linear layout.. What I read about the remoteview id that I can change a Bitmap, Int, Bool, String, etc. but not a drawable. So i guess i cannot use:remoteViews. set Bitmap (R.id.my_ll, "setBackgroundDrawable",BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.get Resources(), R.drawablemy_bg));I am totally disapointed and tried a last idea: views.setInt (R.id. my_ ll,"setBackground Resource" ,R.drawable.my_bg);But The logcat told me: android. widget. Remote Views $Action Exception: view: android. widget.LinearLayout can't use method with RemoteViews:setBackgroundResource(int)I am totally lost and I really don't know what to do.

I can write a widget with a Button or ImageButton and assign a StateDrawable as background or sourcein order to make an effect when you click it. Besides that I have problems with the side of each button, my main problem is this: how do I change the StateDrawable if I want to change the image of the button from the AppWidgetProvider but still want to preserve the click effect like a StateDrawable. The power control widget in Android does things like that.

I have defined custom views in the various layout .xml files. However, all the layouts are using the Linear Layout - put the content would vary.
I would like to create my own widget tag something like <com.mypackage.MyLinearLayout />, I would like to pass the layout as a param to the <com.mypackage.MyLinearLayout layout="@layout/simple.xml" />
How to define new attributes to the custom widgets ? Simply defining a getter/setter method would work or is there any other references.

I'm able to successfully use a ScrollView inside the layout xml file for an application. However, when I tried using a ScrollView inside the layout xml file for a widget, I get a "Problem Loading Widget" error as soon as I drop the widget in the emulator. If I comment out the ScrollView, then the widget shows up in the emulator. I've pasted my layout xml file below. Any thoughts on how to get past this error would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to create an activity that presents some data to the user. The data is such that it can be divided into 'words', each being a widget, and sequence of 'words' would form the data ('sentence'?), the ViewGroup widget containing the words. As space required for all 'words' in a 'sentence' would exceed the available horizontal space on the display, I would like to wrap these 'sentences' as you would a normal piece of text.
The following code:
code:...................
yields something like the left picture, but I would want a layout presenting the same widgets like in the right one.
Is there such a layout or combination of layouts and parameters, or do I have to implement my own ViewGroup for this?
