Android :: Android Linear Layout - Difference Between Weight & Fill_parent

Jul 23, 2010

According to documentaion, FILL_PARENT basically lets the view take up the entire extra space. Weight also dictates how much of the extra space can be taken by the view. What is the difference? For eg: What happens when I use, new LinearLayout.Layout Params(Layout Params.WRAP_CONTENT,LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, 1.0f)

Android :: Linear Layout Horizontal With Wrapping Child Controls

Jun 2, 2010

Is there a property to set for Android's LinearLayout that will enable it to properly wrap child controls? Meaning - I have changeable number of children and would like to layout them horizontally like:
Example: Control1, Control2, Control3, ...

I do that by setting:
ll.setOrientation(LinearLayout.HORIZONTAL);
foreach (Child c in children) ll.addView(c);

However, if I have large number of children, last one gets cuts off, instead of going to next line.

Android :: Linear Layout And Weight In Android

Apr 23, 2010

I always read about this funny weight value in the Android documentations. Now I want to try it for the first time but it isn't working at all. As I understand it from the documentations this layout: should create two buttons that are horizontally aligned and share the space equally. The problem is the two buttons don't grow to fill the space. The result is something like this: I would like the buttons to grow and fill the whole line. If both buttons are set to fill parent only the first button is shown and fills the whole line.

Android :: Change Nested Layout's Child View Group's Width In Java Code?

Oct 6, 2010

I have a layout xml file with a linear layout. One of the children is again a ViewGroup Relative layout. In my java code i want to change the width of this child Viewgroup for my requirements. I tried this

ViewGroup childViewGroup = (LinearLayout)findViewById(childViewGroup);
LayoutParams l = childViewGroup.getLayoutParams();
l.width = 360;
childViewGroup .setLayoutParams(l);

I couldn't do this because findViewById(childViewGroup) doesn't fetch ViewGroups it does only for Views. Note: I cant define a whole new layout.xml for this minor requirement since it is huge layout file and might cause performance overhead. I wanted to just change the width of the child view group in my java activity code.

Android :: Layout - Weight Not Working

Oct 4, 2009

LinearLayout obeys weight and as per documentation weight gives priority to an object. Here is the layout I have: Here you can see that the first textview has a weight of 2, second has a weight of 0, but still the second text view takes up all the space. If I give the first edit view a weight of 0 and second a weight of 2, surprisingly, first edit view gets more space. Isn't this weird, or am I doing something very wrong. I am poor in layouts. <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/LinearLayout01" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"

Android :: Weight Sum - Layout Attributes Not Working

Nov 26, 2009

I have a simple horizontal linear_layout with bunch of image views in it. the trick is that the views have different widths, relative to the size of their parent (the linear layout). I set the layout's weightSum to a 100 and the layout_weight to let's say 10 of one view and 15 of the other, on so on. And it did not work. I also tired using float values setting the weightSum to 1.0 and the layout_weight of the image views to 0.2 and 0.3 and so on. But it didn't work either. I did search this group for any references to the weightSum but found nothing. Any ideas how to handle it?

Android :: Layout Weight Is Inconsistent For Horizontal And Vertical Orientation

Apr 8, 2009

I have played around a bit with the xml files for creating layouts and can't explain the behaviour of layout_weight when using it in a LinearLayout that has orientation="vertical"

When creating a layout that is horizontal everything follows the documentation, that a child would get more space if it's has the highest value.

But the following code for vertical orientation, give more space to the item with lowest weight.

CODE:..........

And the question is: Is this a bug or just a feature that maybe need more documentation?

Android :: Table Row As Linear Layout

This code doesn't work properly as TextView text1 doesn't wrap it just stretches beyond the screen. I've managed to get it working by embedding this LinearLayout into RelativeLayout but it seems to be the least elegant solution plus I don't understand what's wrong with the code above...

Android :: Add Button To Linear Layout

Jan 5, 2010

I have a linear layout like this:

<LinearLayout android:id="@+id/header" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" android:gravity="center_vertical" <ImageView android:id="@+id/icon" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_gravity="top" android:src="@drawable/img1" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/atitle" android:singleLine="true" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> </LinearLayout>

I need to add a button to the above layout problematically which is right justified? I need to do that in code instead of layout xml file (this is because i can't modify that layout xml file). Here is what I am doing: LinearLayout header = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.header); Button buyButton = new Button(this); buyButton.setText(R.string.buy_ringtone); buyButton.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); header.addView(buyButton);
But the button does not appear. Can you please tell me how can i achieve that?

Android :: Changing Linear Layout In Widget

Apr 28, 2010

I have this really annoying problem:In my widget, i would like to change the background by code. I noticed on the Google doc than I can easily change the background of an Imageview: remoteViews.setImageViewResource (R.id.my_iv, R.drawable.my_bg);Ok, too easy, i want to change now the Linear layout.. What I read about the remoteview id that I can change a Bitmap, Int, Bool, String, etc. but not a drawable. So i guess i cannot use:remoteViews. set Bitmap (R.id.my_ll, "setBackgroundDrawable",BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.get Resources(), R.drawablemy_bg));I am totally disapointed and tried a last idea: views.setInt (R.id. my_ ll,"setBackground Resource" ,R.drawable.my_bg);But The logcat told me: android. widget. Remote Views $Action Exception: view: android. widget.LinearLayout can't use method with RemoteViews:setBackgroundResource(int)I am totally lost and I really don't know what to do.

Android :: How To Position Buttons In Linear Layout?

Aug 18, 2010

RelativeLayout is more flexible, and can do what AbsoluteLayout can do and more.
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/RelativeLayout....
To place views on top of one another you can also use FrameLayout, positioning these frame layouts in their parent layout:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/FrameLayout.html

The linear layout does not allow me to position them correctly where they need to go. How do I properly position a button so that it is over a certain part of the image?

Android :: Draw Border At Top Of Linear Layout

Dec 17, 2009

I have followed the example in for the gradient dividers: http://www.connorgarvey.com/blog/?p=34. I have tried to draw a horizontal line at the BOTTOM of my linear layout. Here is my linear layout file:

<LinearLayout android:id="@+id/test" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content>
<ImageView android:id="@+id/icon1"
android:layout_width="32dip"
android:layout_height="32dip"
And I did add <View
android:background="@drawable/black_white_gradient"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="1dp"
android:layout_above="@id/test"

But i don't see any line at the top of the LinearLayout. And when I go to Hierarchy View and see he View (for the hort separator), the getWidth() is 0 while getHeight() is 1. Can you please tell me what am I missing?
