Android : How To Associate An Activity With An Item In XML ListViews In Droid?
Mar 22, 2010
I have a ListView that is populated using an XML file. However, I want each item, when clicked, to start a new Activity related to that item. I understand how to use OnItemClick to start a Toast that shows the selected item's text. However, since the ListView is populated from an XML there is not a specific Id for each item in the list. So, how would I associate an Activity with each item in the ListView when the items do not have Ids?

I have a ListView on my ListActivity and I'd like the rows of the ListView to be 1 of 3 different layouts. The first item in my list is always going to use layout A, the second item in my list is always going to use layout B, and all subsequent items are going to use layout C.
Here is my getView function: Code...
R.id.label1 and R.id.label2 are TextViews on R.layout.layout_A. However, txtLabel1 and txtLabel2 are null after trying to set them. Why?
I stepped through this code in the debugger and it inflated the correct layout (R.layout.layout_A) and fell into the correct case below to set the R.id.label1 and R.id.label2 text. Also, if there is a better way to do this, please let me know.

I want to know how to change dynamically a ListView's item layout. To be exact, i want to know the method that the ListView's bindView method is called at runtime. if the bindView method is artificially called by a other method. then i will change a ListView's item layout.

I have a ListView with different layouts for different items. Some items are separators. Some items are different because they hold different kinds of data, etc.
I want to implement ViewHolders to speed up the getView process, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. Different layouts have different pieces of data (which makes naming difficult) and different numbers of Views I want to use.
How should I go about doing this?
The best idea I can come up with is to create a generic ViewHolder with X items where X is the number of Views in an item layout with the highest number of them. For the other views with a small number of Views, I'll just use a subsection of those variables in the ViewHolder. So say I have 2 layouts I use for 2 different items. One has 3 TextViews and the other has 1. I would create a ViewHolder with 3 TextView variables and only use 1 of them for my other item. My problem is that this can get really ugly looking and feels really hacky; especially when an item layout may have many Views of many different types.
Here is a very basic getView:
CODE:..........
Suppose I had different types of row layouts, I could have a ViewHolder for each type of row. But what type would I declare "holder" to be at the top? Or would I declare a holder for each type and then use the one for the type of row I'm on.

Can I have two ListViews on a single ListActivity? I have built the xml file easy enough, but the code around ListActivity, setListAdapter(), getListView() and the like, all seem to be designed around one ListView per activity. How to get 2 ListViews in one screen?

I want to have multiple listviews in my activity. Every listview will have a different adapter and every item in the listview must be clickable (other actions for every listview).
So my problem now is that I can't create multiple clickable listviews. I have one listview like this <ListView android:id="@android:id/ list".. and the other listview looks like this <ListView android:id="@+id/ flightList"
The first listview looks like this in my activity hotelList = (ListView)findViewById(android.R.id.list);
the second: listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.flightList);
I can click on the first list and it does what it has to do, but i cant do anything with the second list.. probably because it hasn't the android:id/list declaration. does someone knows how I can solve this problem or other suggestions how I can get multiple lists in 1 activity.

I am just getting started with the Android SDK and I had a quick question. I am trying to set up a ListView with a rectangle of color on the left and then a bit of text for each row. I also want to make it so I can click each entry in the list and open a new activity to display some information (similar to the contact list).

I'm attempting to call start Activity(myIntent) from the click of a menu button but my application crashes at that point. The same start Activity call works fine from a regular button click, so, I assume the menu button is missing information about the context? Or maybe I'm totally off the mark here. So what's the correct way to have a menu item take me to a specific Activity? I've revised my code based on the initial set of advice. Still crashing in the same place. The debugger doesn't enter the exception clause, the app just dies. Code...

How can you specify which item gets the default focus on Activity startup? Using requestFocus programmatically does not work. On setContextView the first focusable item listed in the XML is given the default focus. When using RelativeLayout, the first item listed is not always the desired item or necessarily on top.

In android, I create my menu item like this?
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
menu.add(0, 0, 0, "Menu1");
menu.add(0, 1, 0, "Menu2");
return true;}
How can I set all the menu item disabled programmically (in another part of the code in my activity, not in onCreateOptionsMenu() method itself)?

I need some help using ListActivity. The API provides "onListItemClick" which you can override and is called when user selects an item in the list.
However I want the same type of functionality when an item in the list is selected. So as soon as user highlights something in the list I want my application to do something (like play a preview). I dont want to wait for user to select the button.

I have a group on gmail called coworkers. I added many of the employees in my company as contacts. I am now running Launcher Pro as well for what that is worth. I found the option to check coworkers as a group, but I can't figure out how to associate or move the employee contacts under that group. What am I missing? Or am I going about this the wrong way entirely?

My wife's name is Marilyn. Not Maryland. No, I don't want to send a text to the state of Maryland. Or call the state. :0)
Is there a way to "train" Android to associate a certain spoken word with a certain result?
Oh, and it can't get "U2" or "REM" right either! I have been messing around with the new voice commands (after downloading the app and widget replacement), and I figured these would be popular enough (although oddly spelled) to be configured in. It got the Beatles, though!

I am on my first Android application and I am on a timeline so details and examples will be useful since my knowledge is still minimal. I want my first screen to present the user with a list of activities to choose from. In my situation it is a recipe app where the user first chooses the type of food, such as, Beef, Chicken, or Pork. I want the application to launch an activity depending on the list item that the user clicked on. I am not sure if I should use a list view, a text view, a scroll view, a list activity, an activity group...

I don't know exactly how to explain this problem, but I'll try. I have a ListView with several items. Each item has inside a TextView and two ImageView. I want the ImageView change when I click on them, and I want to open a context menu when I press for a long time into the ListView item.For the ImageView, everything works properly. For the whole item, I can show the context menu after a long press, but my problem is that the ImageView changes as well when I am pressing the TextView, for example.I hope you understand my problem. I think that all the children of a view are affected by an event in the parent, but I am not sure.

I am writing an app that needs to be able to open (be associated in the browser download window for example) with a certain file type. The file type has .emx extension and is in an xml format (the top of the files have <?xml version='1.0' encoding="UTF-8"?> ). However, I can't for the life of me get my app associated with this filetype.

I've written an app that can handle the VIEW action for a given mime Type, say "application/foo". By adding the following to Android Manifest.xml the Browser automatically uses my app to open downloads of that type. The G Mail app also tries to use my app to Preview attachments of that type, but it's passing a URI with scheme "g mail-ls://" rather than a "file://" URI. I guess I need to use a Content Provider to get the attachment data, I haven't looked into that yet. But the real mystery is the Email app there just doesn't seem any way to make it open the attachments. Any pointers? Opening attachments is a very common requirement of course, and I would expect the Android platform to encourage developers to write apps to handle more mime types. Instead I couldn't find any answers.

This question has been asked [numerous times] before, but I have not seen any definitive answers, or examples of code that actually works. I would like to associate an Activity with a particular file type. For discussion, assume that I want my Activity to be associated with PDFs. Here is what I currently have. I have experimented with many different values and combinations of values in the intent-filter, but I have yet to get my Activity to start when a PDF is selected.
<activity name="com.mycompany.MyActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE" />
<data android:scheme="file" />
<data android:mimeType="application/pdf" />
<data android:pathPattern="*.pdf" />
<data android:host="*" />
</intent-filter> </activity>
