Android : How Do I Store Data Into A Flat File In Phone?
Jul 15, 2010
I want to store a few values in the form of high scores. But since im not going to be storing more than 5 values, using SQLlite doesn't seem appropriate. Another option considering was a flat file, but not sure how to go about..

I have some reference data in a text file (~5MB) that I want to use with might android application.The file is of the format:
1|a|This is line 1a
1|b|This is line 1b
2|a|This is line 2a
2|b|This is line 2b
2|c|This is line 2c
What I want to know is the most efficient way (less memory, fast, size etc.) to use this file within my application.
a.) Should I save the file as a raw resource and open and read the whole file whenever I need a certain line.
b.) Should I convert the file to XML and use XPath to query the file when ever I need to look up a value
<!--sample XML -->
<data>
<line number="1">
<entry name="a">This is line 1 a</entry>
</line>
</data>
c.) Should I just copy & paste the whole file as a static string array in the application and use that.
[EDIT] I will also need to search this file and jump to arbitrary keywords e.g. "line 1a".

I am developing an app on Android that will randomly pick and display an inspirational quotation (or verse) from a large collection of quotations. On Android I can choose between a flat file and an SQLite database. The app should satisfy the following conditions:
Be scalable to 10^6 quotations and/or verses
Be very fast (i.e. retrieve and display a quotation, immediately at the touch of a button)
Be able to load new quotations from an external source (in a format I have not yet decided)
What data format must I use?

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

I need to store data to use in my android program. Here are the details about the data: There will be one table. Each "row" of data will have a unique INT identifier. Other then that field, there will be four other INT fields and a text field. The string field will probably be a 2 or 3 sentences long. Each of the 4 INT fields will correspond to the ID of other rows.

In Android when you upgrade a database all data is lost. I'm going through a phase of development right now that is forcing many database upgrades. I don't want to lose all my data (and have to manually re-enter it) each time I upgrade my database. I would like to store my data in flat files and load those flat files into their respective tables each time a database upgrade occurs.
My questions is: What is the best way to go about this on the Android platform? Where should I store the data files (res/raw???) What sql should I execute to load these files?

I'm trying to store a raw uncompressed file into the apk. I already tried rename it to mp3, png, zip, but all these extensions still compress the file: if i open the apk using winzip, it shows tcfiles.png 4194304 -> 4080. I already heard about the "aapt -0" to store uncompressed, but no one tells how to do this from within eclipse. I don't call aapt by hand, i use the one generated by eclipse.

Now I store this information in this array List<GeoPoint> race = new ArrayList<GeoPoint>(); Where to save information for every race in Android (Database, internal XML)?

I'm writing an application that needs to store some small jpeg or pngs. Looking at the documentation i have seen that databases are stored under /data/data/package_name/databases I decided to store my data under /data/data/package_name/files. With the emulator i can see all these files (databases and images) under the proposed directories but moving the application on a real device and installing a file system browser i cannot see any file under /data. Can anyone explain me why? My application works perfectly on my mobile (HTC magic) so i think that data is downloaded and stored. If this is a security constraint,do i need to put the application under debug on the mobile in order to inspect file system?

I'm coming from an iPhone 3G, and I have Shure SE115 earbuds. I don't find the audio quality of the Evo to be anywhere near the quality of my iPhone. I don't find the audio quality of my iPhone to be as good as my gf's zune hd. If I put the same song on both my iPhone and Evo, it is immediately apparent to me which one is which. The Evo doesn't go as loud, and it just sounds a lot more flat, and way less crisp. We're talking night and day here, at least IMO.
I don't consider myself an audiophile by any means, but this feels like a huge downgrade to me. I've tried using both the stock music player as well as Doubletwist. It's so sounding. I think I'm probably going to return it, and go with a new iPhone. Anyone else generally unimpressed by the audio quality of the Evo? I'd imagine my beef is with the hardware, and it's pretty unlikely that a 2.2 root would fix my problems.

For a particular activity - what is the best way to store data that needs to be displayed. The issue is that when the user changes orientation, you need to be able to re-render your activity which means you need to get back at that data that you use to render. I understand the MVC design pattern, but I guess I'm wondering where the M should be stored. Global variables? Static members of your activity? Serialized to private storage?

This issue has troubled me a lot, please help if you have any ideas.
- I am accessing an xml file from withing the apk, (stored in /res/ raw). The xml is read succesfully. My goal is to use this xml file as data that can be changed in the apk.
- I tried unpacking and packing the apk file with ZIP compression and the newly packed apk worked on the phone.
- I changed the xml file and packed the contents of the apk into a new apk
- "install was unsuccesful" was the result of installing the new apk
As I see it, for every file stored into the apk, there are equivalent references stored in the manifest and cert files:
for example: SHA1-Digest: YS8iSCii71WMNrK7CHy5XLXBo+k=
Do you have any other ideas of how I can store/alter information into the APK?

I have an application that requires about 24Meg of mp3 files as a core part of the app. If I store them in the /raw directory on the emulator, I run out of memory. I can store them on the SDcard, but my question is will they be included when I package the application for the marketplace, or do I need to have the user download the files after they have the app on the phone? Where are larger files typically stored in Android apps or are large files not usually included?
