Android :: Can I Initialize An Array List From Data Specified In Xml Resource File?
Mar 9, 2009
Is is possible to specify data in xml resource file and initialize ArrayList from it? I am looking for a way to use the ArrayList with a SimpleAdapter to bind to a ListView. I am wondering if there is a way to specify my data in xml resource file and init ArrayList from it.

I just want to read <string-array> resource elements into a String array. I don't want to make a view or anything and mess with adapters - just want to transfer the elements. Is there a built in class for this? Or do I need to treat the resource file as a regular file?

I have a String Array Resource that has about 1000 drug names
<string-array name="index">

Aspirin

Levitra

....
</string-array>
I tried to load this string array into a String[] inside an activity. Using the same syntax provided by Google's java documentation found here.
Resources res = getResources();
String[] drugs = res.getStringArray(R.array.index);
It appears my string-array has too many records and its causing my App to crash (stack-overflow?) When I reduce the string-array resource to about 506 records, the app works again, but adding even 1 more element in the string-array would crash the app. What should I do? I want to code logic to filter and do other things to the list. I do not have a SQL db in the app so I can't do the processing in the DB. Is there a way to iterate through the string-array resource without loading it into a String []? I notice the resource is a pointer. Or is there an alternative data structure or approach that would work?

I have an xml resource in res/values/integers.xml

<resources>
<integer-array name="UserBases">

2

8

10

16

</integer-array>
</resources>
and ive tried several things to access it:
int[] bases = R.array.UserBases;
this just returns and int reference to UserBases not the array itself
int[] bases = Resources.getSystem().getIntArray(R.array.UserBases);
and this throws an exception back at me telling me the int reference R.array.UserBases points to nothing
what is the best way to access this array, push it into a nice base-type int[] and then possibly push any modifications back into the xml resource.
I've checked the android documentation but I haven't found anything terribly fruitful.

I have an XML resource file:
<resources>

</resources>
Using XmlPullParser, on the START_TAG, I can use:
int value = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "value", 0);
to get values 1, 2, 3...however:
int resourceId = parser.getAttributeIntValue(null, "resourceId", 0);
doesn't work...it just yields the default value 0, or whatever I change the default value (3rd parameter) to be. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or if this is possible?

OK, before I start, it's about an LT15i. I don't know what's happening, but at some .FTFs Flashtool does not show the file list (middle column) and neither "wipe cache" or data and one FTF has the "wipe cache" option only. This is really annoying. Tutorials specify a download link for a specific FTF and after starting Flashtool and selecting the flash option, that FTF is not showing up properly. Should I download an earlier version of the program?

I have preferences where you can enable/disable what items will show up on the menu. There are 17 items. I made a string array in values/arrays.xml with titles for each of these 17 items.
I have preferences.xml which has the layout for my preferences file, and I would like to reference a single item from the string array to use as the title.
In the Android developer reference, I see how I can reference a single string with XML, but now how I can reference a string from an array resource in XML.

After several hours of searching for the cause of a Out Of Memory Error, I found a wierd problem with Strings. To keep it simple, trimmed it down to something like this:
ArrayList<String> someStringList = new ArrayList<String>(1000);
for (int i=0; i<1000; i++) {
String someBigString = new String(new char[100000]);
String someSmallString = someBigString.substring(0,1);
someStringList.add(someSmallString);
}

I have an array adapted listview (the array adapting is done in another class). I just got the click listener working for the list but now I want set it up so that when I click an item. It pulls the strings from the clicked item and piggybacks them on the intent to a new activity. I figure I am supposed to use intent.putextra however I am not sure how to pull the correct strings corresponding to the item that i click on. My code is below. I am simply lost to be honest
//Initialize the ListView lstTest = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.lstText);
//Initialize the ArrayList alrts = new ArrayList<Alerts>();
//Initialize the array adapter notice with the listitems.xml layout
arrayAdapter = new AlertsAdapter(this, R.layout.listitems,alrts);
//Set the above adapter as the adapter for the list
lstTest.setAdapter(arrayAdapter);
//Set the click listener for the list
lstTest.setOnItemClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() {
public void onItemClick(AdapterView adapterView, View view, int item, long arg3) {
Intent intent = new Intent( HomePageActivity.this, PromotionActivity.class );
finish(); startActivity(intent); } } );
my alerts class..
public class Alerts {
public String cityid;
public String promoterid;
public String promoshortcontent;
public String promocontent;
public String promotitle;
public String locationid;
public String cover;
@Override public String toString() {
return "City: " +cityid+ " Promoter: " +promoterid+ "Short Promotion: " +promoshortcontent+ "Promotion: " +promocontent+ "Title: " +promotitle+ "Location: " +locationid+ "Cover: " +cover+ "$"; } }
anddddd my alertsadapter class..
public class AlertsAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<Alerts> {
int resource;
String response; Context context;
//Initialize adapter public AlertsAdapter(Context context, int resource, List<Alerts> items) {
super(context, resource, items); this.resource=resource;
} @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent)
{ LinearLayout alertView; //Get the current alert object Alerts al = getItem(position);
//Inflate the view if(convertView==null) {
alertView = new LinearLayout(getContext());
String inflater = Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE; LayoutInflater vi;
vi = (LayoutInflater)getContext().getSystemService(inflater);
vi.inflate(resource, alertView, true); } else {
alertView = (LinearLayout) convertView; }
//Get the text boxes from the listitem.xml file
TextView textPromo =(TextView)alertView.findViewById(R.id.txtPromo);
TextView textPromoter =(TextView)alertView.findViewById(R.id.txtPromoter);
TextView textLocation =(TextView)alertView.findViewById(R.id.txtLocation);
//Assign the appropriate data from our alert object above
textPromo.setText(al.promocontent); textPromoter.setText(al.promoterid);
textLocation.setText(al.locationid); return alertView;
} }

import android.widget.ArrayAdapter;public class Episode7 extends ListActivity { String[] testArray = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.testArray); /** Called when the activity is first created. */

if (pairedDevices.size() > 0) {
for (BluetoothDevice device : pairedDevices)
mArrayAdapter.add(device.getName());

For some reason, the array list isn't populating. Also, how can I display the array list in a ListView

I have a text file that I am pulling from my SD card which contains an array in plain text format. Here are the contents of that file ...
http://www.oddree.com/rayhaque/android1.jpg,http://www.oddree.com/rayhaque/android2.jpg,http://www.oddree.com/rayhaque/android3.jpg,http://www.oddree.com/rayhaque/android4.jpg,http://www.oddree.com/rayhaque/android5.jpg
I am trying to import that text file into a String, convert that String to an array, and then load that array into a list adapter. If I try to split up readString or a trimmed result of readString, I get a forced close every time. If I copy the contents of the file into a String and then use that ... everything works as expected. So what is the difference between loading this stuff from a text file, and loading it from an included string? Is it a byte conversion issue? Code...

All of the android examples for XmlPullParser pull from a local resource file, and all of the SAX examples pull the XML from a URL. I've been told SAX is faster, so I'm trying to use that to pull data from a local resource file (res/xml/thefile.xml)
The example code I'm working off of is here. So in that example, the code I want to change is:
URL url = new URL("http://example.com/example.xml");
...
xr.parse(new InputSource(url.openStream()));
Instead of using URL, I want to use getXml(R.xml.thefile)
Is that possible, or does SAX need to get data from a URL?

I must be missing something simple here.I've searched around but don't think my search query is touching on the right topics to yield results. Anyhow, what I'm after is running through the array of data I bind to a ListView after a "Submit" button has been clicked.

I'm interested in instantiating a LinearLayout object from an xml file that has a LinearLayout file configuration. I want to do this within a method of my Activity. I tried findViewById() but that returned null. I've made sure that the LinearLayout id is the one I'm passing. Note that this layout isn't part of my screen, it's stand-alone, so I want to build a LinearLayout object from the xml.

I have a problem setting a ringtone from a resource in my app:
Uri uri = Uri.parse("android.resource://com.package.app/" + R.raw.sound1); RingtoneManager.setActualDefaultRingtoneUri(this, RingtoneManager.TYPE_RINGTONE, uri);
I've noticed also some people had the same problem but got no answers. Do any of you guys have any idea of how making this work? (without having to copy the file to the sdcard)

I am trying to read a file "words.txt" from a resource. It is a very simple, but large (2 MB), text file that I want to read line by line. I have put the file into /res/raw/words.txt, and try to open it with the following code:
CODE:...................
However, I get a java.io.IOException. This is not a "resource not found" exception, so the resource is opened correctly, but the readLine() produces the error.
I tried using the InputStream itself, with the result that read() produces -1, which stands for EOF, as if the file was empty.
