Android :: BigFraction Class In The Apache-Commons-Math Library Return Incorrect Division Results?
May 14, 2010
In the spirit of using existing, tested and stable libraries of code, I started using the Apache-Commons-Math library and its BigFraction class to perform some rational calculations for an Android app I'm writing called RationalCalc.
It works great for every task that I have thrown at it, except for one nagging problem. When dividing certain BigFraction values, I am getting incorrect results.
If I create a BigFraction with the inverse of the divisor and multiply instead, I get the same incorrect answer but perhaps that is what the library is doing internally anyway.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
The division works correctly with a BigFraction of 2.5 but not 2.51, 2.49, etc...
[UPDATE]
This was indeed a bug in the apache-commons-math 2.0 libraries. The bug is fixed in v.2.1.
It is now listed in the Fixed Issues section of the bug tracker:
When multiplying two BigFraction objects with numerators larger than will fit in an java-primitive int the result of BigFraction.ZERO is incorrectly returned..attempting to reproduce the issue and setting me on the right track.

I'm trying to use the Amazon Web Services java sdk jar but it has references to org.apache.commons.httpclient. All I seem to have in my Android sdk is org.apache.commons.http.client, which is a different namespace and obviously causes the build to fail. I'm new to Java and Android dev... is there a way to "map" one to the other or create some sort of symbolic link? If not, does that mean I have to import a "standard" org.apache.commons library?

I am trying a simple send mail application using apache commons library.
Here is the code.
The email sending code is working fine in a standalone application. However when I try to run it as android application
It gave following error message. trouble processing "javax/naming/AuthenticationException.class": [2009-09-17 05:33:20 - Commons]
Attempt to include a core VM class in something other than a core library. It is likely that you have attempted to include the core library from a desktop virtual machine into an application, which will most assuredly not work. If you really intend to build a core library -- which is only appropriate as part of creating a full virtual machine binary, as opposed to compiling an application -- then use the "--core-library" option to suppress this error message. If you go ahead and use "--core-library" but are in fact building an application, then please be aware that your build will still fail at some point; you will simply be denied the pleasure of reading this helpful error message. I've removed my convoluted and badly malformed question so that it doesn't detract from the very neat and correct answer beneath. Given the (surprising) difficulty of finding an on-line example for doing this incredibly common task, I hope Yoni gets a few more up-ticks for his response.
So the question...How do I use Apache.Commons to upload a file to some destination. I'm using it in Android and uploading to a PHP script, but obviously it can work from any Java program and to any HTTP based listener.

I need maths for my game physics and lots of them, so I use the. Math library. And guess what? I never casted so much to floats in my entire life. And i know how costly it is to use doubles on an embedded device because I read the performance optimization page in the google android sdk docs. So I am wondering if we couldn't get a Math package with functions taking and returning floats instead of the default doubles. e.g. Math.sinf Math.cosf.

Within a public class that doesn't extend any other class I'm doing some evaluation stuff and I would like to return a Dialog if something needs to be communicated to the user.
I'm using an AsyncTask to run a method of an instance of this class from the main ui:
CODE:.........
Now, the public Dialog start() method of OnlineActivities.java creates a dialog using the Context that was assigned via it's parameter.
When the Dialog is returned to onPostExecute I receive the following exception
CODE:......................
I suppose I cannot use the context like this. But what would be the alternative? How can I outsource some basic stuff I always need to do, even some general Dialogs? Do I need to use custom intents instead?

I have successfully implemented the Media Player for my apps, but when I tried to use some of the callback methods I ran into a problem. What I'm trying to do is use Media Player in a reusable (library) class. This MediaPlayer is created by passing the Activity Context to it's constructor.I then use getApplicationContext to avoid any potential memory leaks. This works well and I'm quite happy with it.My problem is trying to use callbacks. When I implement MediaPlayer.OnPreparedListener in my class.I believe this is due to the class itself not being an Activity. When I implemented the callbacks in a separate test project, the mp.prepare () works fine. I cannot use a passed context to my library class, as that would require the Activity to implement the listener and not my library class. How can I create a library class that creates/uses MediaPlayer and it's callbacks without making it extend Activity? Is this not possible?

I'm attempting to make a simple homebrew game engine/framework in android. I have the "engine" as a library project that handles all of the graphics rendering, game activity, and whatnot. Essentially, the library project has a class GameMain which has a background image, an array of drawables, and a few functions (the most important is a run() function). The projects that use this library extend this class with their own unique run() function. The idea is that games that use the engine start with their own activity, launch the GameActivity from the library, and pass their unique GameMain child object into the library, which should run the unique run() method thanks to polymorphism.
Getting this to work, however, has been a struggle. I originally attempted to make the GameMain Serializable, which didn't appear to work. I'm now attempting to make it a Parcelable, but it does not appear to run the child objects run() function when called from the library. I'm wondering, are Parcelable objects actually capable of sending Object methods across activities? Am I going about this the wrong way, or am I just having some other weird bug I have not uncovered?

I am trying to add an 'Android Library project' I have created to another regular Android project. The Library Project had a jar dependency and was also dependent on another java project in my workspace. I had to add both of these to the my 'regular Android project' because otherwise Eclipse could not find them (Not sure if this was the right thing to do because it would mean that I will have to manually update all projects when the library gets another jar dependency). Anyway, the errors went away and now the Regular Android Project can't find the R class, I have tried a clean but it did not work. I checked in the /gen folder and both the R classes are there - from the library and the regular project. They have the correct strings inside them.

After getting comfy with the Android 2.0 environment and emulator (for the most part), I took the next step to bind <myapp> against the latest Android 2.0 jars: android.jar and maps.jar. The existing code (working in Android 1.6) did not need any changes to compile, but the app doesn't build due to a weird error message that prevents the build. See snippet below, drawn from the Eclipse Console. I have no aspirations to run up against any core library classes, and I am not aware I do. In other words, I am not implementing SealedObject (or any other core class that I am aware of) that would run up against Dalvik. Not in the javax, java or any other namespace. Anybody got any pointers what's going on here?......

I have a thread on StackOverflow (titled: NoClassDefFoundError for Jersey 2.4.1 client in Android) but I thought I would reach out here in hope of getting a more specific/targeted audience group.I have followed instructions from other posts about the libs Android dependency fix but I still get the issue.
I am using Eclipse Juno, with an Android App targeting API 17. Basically I am getting a NoClassDefFoundError at runtime for the org. glassfish. jersey. model.internal.CommonConfig$1 class located in jersey-client-2.4.1.jar. This is when I just do a Run As... deploy from within Eclipse and it fails when I instantiate the CommonConfig class or one that depends on it internally. The start up log is given below:
[HIGH]12-10 12:25:20.657: I/dalvikvm(10170): Failed resolving Lorg/glassfish/jersey/model/internal/CommonConfig$1; interface 920 'Lcom/google/common/base/Function;'
12-10 12:25:20.657: W/dalvikvm(10170): Link of class 'Lorg/glassfish/jersey/model/internal/CommonConfig$1;' failed
12-10 12:25:20.657: E/dalvikvm(10170): Could not find class 'org.glassfish.jersey.model.internal.CommonConfig$ 1', referenced from method
[code]....
It doesn't seem to find a static inner class of CommonConfig. In the SO forum I tinkered with some options in ProGuard but I've come to learn that this isn't even used in the standard debug mode, only when you do a release build (Export from Eclipse). It would appear that something is happening with the class but I can't figure out why it would not be included if its parent is. Is there some kind of 'light' ProGuard process that goes on when a debug deploy is done? how to resolve this particular case of NoClassDefFoundError?

Im the developer of a fairly new app the Math Alarm Clock. A month ago I looked for alarm clock which was a challenge to turn off and didnt find any on the market so I developed this. Basically you tell it how hard you want the math (4 levels of difficulty) from (5*8) to [(17*19)- 16*12)]. It is smart enough to never give you stupid easy questions such as (73-73) or (1*10). Then choose how many in a row you must answer correctly from 1 to 6 to turn off the alarm. Specify a few math-free snoozes if you like to snooze a few times before entering math. Or turn the math off completely and use it as a regular alarm.
The other unique feature is the music alarm. Of the other alarm clocks I found one required you to change music into a ringtone and the other only allowed you to pick one song. This alarm clock allows you to choose an individual song or choose a random song from a specific artist or a random song from a specific album.
And for any Canadian Rogers Dream or Magic users you may have noticed other alarm clocks will completely crash your phone and require a factory reset. This has been fixed in the Math Alarm Clock and it should work with no problem on HTC based phones.
Lastly as the comments point out, I respond to feedback very fast and for the most part have requested features implemented within 24 hours.
The last few comments:
"This developer rocks! I requested a feature and it was added within hours. This is the best alarm clock for the G1 hands down!" 5/5
"Great app, developer is quick to update. Highly recommend!" 5/5
"Awesome app!" 5/5
"Amazing! The only alarm that actually wakes me up" 5/5

Using arc tangents for interpreting accelerometers seems to be a pretty easy way to go to get a desired result. I just benchmarked (float)Math.atan2(x,y) and it's a very slow function. I checked FloatMath for Android 1.0 SDK and it has sin and cos but no tan or atan. Is there a faster way to do this?

I know this is more of a general programming question, but my Android friends here have always been helpful. I am trying to make an image move from one part of the screen to a position the user touches, as a constant speed. I don't know the best way to go about doing this and the way I have been trying to get to work is taxing my brain too much.
I have been using geometry to calculate slope, then using Sin * movement speed to calculate the difference in X,Y coordinates.
This is the codecode...
The problem that I'm having is the image is veering way of course when traveling in Y heavy paths. When traveling horizontally it works almost perfect.
I know there is probably an easier way though I don't know how to use a lot of things (like OpenGLES) so if your advice is to use a different method please link a tutorial for that method if you know of one.

According to this SDK guide, unit-testing a Library project can be achieved by creating a standard application project, reference the Library project and then instrument the application for unit testing. However, when I do this and launch the test application I get the message. No tests found with test runner 'JUnit 3".I'm using Eclipse and the Android ADT plugin, all latest versions.the projects compile just fine. The test project also installs fine to the emulator. But in the console I can see that it looks for <library>.apk, which of course doesn't exist since I'm compiling this as a library into the test project.

As I understand, the three ways of distributing my application are via Jar, Android Library and Android Library Project.Jar - cannot contain resources or XML layouts (so this is out for me)Android Library - I don't really know how this works but the Google API uses it..Android Library Project - includes resources but allows the client free rein on the code as it is distributed as source. If I am to create a closed source application that requires drawables and XML files that I want to distribute to other Android programmers, what should I use? And can someone direct me to a tutorial on creating an Android Library?

I have a pretty big library I developed specifically for use in my Android Application. However business logic itself has no dependency on Android. To preserve that, I used Commons Logging throughout this library and it's respective JUnit tests (which I run in Eclipse).
However now that I am starting to integrate it into an Activity which I launch on Android, I am unable to get my logging to work. In Eclipse/JUnit, I had simply pulled in log4j's jar file as well as a log4j.properties file. This doesn't seem to work when deploying to a device. After struggling with attempting to get that to work for several hours, I gave up and tried replacing all my commons logging stuff with android.util.Log. Now I can log on the device.. but all JUnit tests are broken. When any JUnit tries to log using android.util.Log, it throws a RuntimeException 'Stub!'.
I would prefer to revert to my commons logging approach.. if anyone can help with that.. otherwise.. what can I do to get my JUnit test cases running using 'android.util.Log'?
