Android :: Timeout On Wakelock Causes WakeLock Under-locked Error

Jul 7, 2010

I have a service that acts a download manager, downloading files in the background. I have aquired a partial wake lock while the downloads are going. When the downloads finish, I manually release the wakelock. Because I am paranoid, I acquired the wakelock also with a timeout. The problem I am seeing is that if I have already manually released my wakelock, when the timeout period expires an error is presented to the user (and adb logcat shows an under-locked wakelock exception).

Is there any way to use a timeout (as backup wakelock release in case the app force closes for some reason) without getting this error?

Android :: How To Launch External Activity In Current Activity's Process?

Aug 27, 2010

My app is comprised of a set of reusable Activities that other apps can reuse. For various reasons, I would like my Activities to be launched in context of the invoking Activity's process, instead of always being launched in my Activity's process (default behavior on Android). How can I achieve this?

Android :: Activity Timeout On WebView Load

Aug 3, 2009

In my app I have to load external page into WebView-based activity. Some of my users with slower connections are reporting screen timeout while waiting for the page to load. What would be a good way of loading the page on backgorund thread and then refreshing the screen? Use HttpClient to fetch it and then use WebView#loadData? My fear is - the page I'm loading is pretty complicated there's some JS that happens on load - wouldn't I just mess it up? Is there an alternative way of doing what I need?

Android :: Pausing A Thread - Activity Pause Timeout For HistoryRecord

Jun 30, 2010

I'm trying to write a game engine in Android, but I don't have much familiarity with threads.

My thread has an attribute, mSurfaceHolder, which holds the surface that I'll be drawing to. The run() method for my thread looks like this:

CODE:.............

STATE_RUNNING represents the state when the activity is in the foreground and the game should be running.
STATE_PAUSED represents the state when another activity has come into the foreground. I'm not completely sure why I need to still draw while it's paused, but that's what I seem to have gathered from the LunarLander example.

What I'm hoping is that while I'm looking at the activity, the game will update and draw (which I test by using LogCat). And then when I go back to the home screen or another activity appears over the top, it will just draw.

Well it does draw and update while I'm watching the activity, so the game loop itself works. But when I leave the activity, it has no effect. Here is the thread's pause() method that is called from the activity's onPause():

CODE:.............

As you can see, to test this method I have logged some messages. Now what I find when I leave the activity is that "Here" is logged, but "There" is not. Now with my limited knowledge of threads (I hardly know what synchronized actually does), I believe this will happen because my thread can't get synchronized with the surface holder. But I don't know WHY it doesn't synchronize. A few seconds after I've left the activity, I see the following warning in LogCat:

Activity pause timeout for HistoryRecord

Any idea why this would happen? There are no problems if I try to start the activity again, the thread just keeps running as it was.

Just discovered something else. The thread pauses just fine if I leave the activity within about a second of having started it. And then it will resume and pause again with no problems at all while the same task is still running. I have no idea why for a short period of time it will work, but if I leave it too long, it won't.

Okay... I fixed it. But I don't think I'm supposed to do what I've done. I've basically removed any synchronization with mSurfaceHolder from both the pause() and the setState() methods (which is used by pause()). No it works as it's supposed to, but I'm thinking the synchronization is there for a reason.

Perhaps the best question for me to ask is this: WHEN should you synchronize a thread with an object by use of a synchronized block? And in this case, what is the purpose of synchronizing with the SurfaceHolder?

Android :: Launch Activity Without UI?

Apr 24, 2010

Is it in any way possible to launch an activity from the main function without having a UI? i.e. is there a way to create a sort of "wrapper" around another activity, i.e. by launching the main activity, it takes you to another activity automatically. If that is not possible, is there a way to remove the main activity from the stack so that clicking the back button does not take you to a blank UI?
Here's an example of what I'm trying to do:

public class WrapperActivity extends Activity {

/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
final Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_DIAL, Uri.parse("tel:555-1212"));
startActivity(intent);
}
}

Android :: Launch Activity At Certain Time

Dec 28, 2009

I'm new to Android development, so I might be missing something obvious. I want to launch an activity when the user's phone clock hits a specified time (similar to an alarm). However, I'm not sure how I would go about doing this as constant polling of the clock seems inefficient and a waste of resources. Do I need to capture broadcast events from the lclock, or use PendingIntents?

Android :: Launch An Activity In A New Process

Jul 29, 2010

In order to keep some native code happy, I need to launch an activity in a new process. Does anyone know how to do this?

I can set the activity's process attribute in the manifest, but this will cause *all* instances of the activity to appear in the *same* process, which I can't have.

I'm willing to use internal APIs for this, and I've found Process.start(), but it's not at all clear how this is supposed to be used.

Android :: How To Update App's Icon Launch Activity?

Jul 14, 2010

I'm currently running into an issue that makes sense but I'm not too sure how to resolve it... Here is the scenario: App v1 icon LAUNCH is set to Activity Main from the manifest file. App v2 icon LAUNCH is set to Activity All from the manifest file and Activity Main no longer exists. After updating to App v2 the app icon fails to launch the application saying it doesn't exist! After a restart of the phone things work. So how can I refresh the applications package or better the launch icon and shortcut icons so that my users don't experience this after an upgrade of my newest app version?

Android :: RatingBar OnClick To Launch New Activity

I have a ListView that uses different XML files to create Views and make items out of. One of these XML files contains a RatingBar. Everything displays and looks excellent. I'm trying to attach an onClick handler to the RatingBar to launch a new Activity. My RatingBar is of style ?android:attr/ratingBarStyleSmall; so it's just an indicator (I want the small RatingBar click to take the user to an Activity where they can do various ratings).

My problem is the onClick handler for the RatingBar never gets executed. What makes it more interesting is that I've used the same code to make a LinearLayout clickable and it works fine. My Adapter's getView looks as such:...............

Android : Can App's Main Activity Be Bypassed On Launch?

May 9, 2010

Are there any scenarios on Android where a process can be instantiated (classes loaded, etc.) and a non-main activity launched without going through the main activity? Background: my app has a single main activity (android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" and android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"), some secondary activities, and a preferences class providing static methods meant to be called from anywhere. These static methods' implementations require a Context, and so the class has a static Context member s_context; the static methods assert that s_context is non-null before using it. The very first thing I do in my main activity's onCreate() method is pass getApplicationContext() into the preferences class so it can set s_context.

Android : How To Launch Droid Activity From An AlertDialog?

Nov 22, 2009

I am trying to create a small pop-up in my Android application to let the user choose from one of many items, ala a ListView. I am hoping to make it show up as a translucent box that overlays on the screen, as opposed to completely occupying it like Activities usually do. One technique for doing this that I've heard is possible is to launch an Activity in an AlertDialog box. This would be perfect - it's the ideal size and has a lot of the mechanical properties I'm looking for, but I'm totally unable to find any more specifics of this technique. Is this possible? And if not, what is the preferred way of accomplishing something like this?
