Samsung Galaxy S :: I.Tech Virtual Keyboard / KeyPro

Jul 22, 2010

I've got an old i.Tech Virtual Keyboard I'd like to use with my Galaxy S.I downloaded KeyPro from the Market and jumped through the hoops.However, after selecting my VKB as input method for a memo KeyPro crashed when I punched the first key. It subsequently crashed whenever I tried to use the keyboard, change any settings, and even when I tried to uninstall it (which eventually worked, thank God).Does anyone else have any experience with this?Have I been unlucky or is this just a spectacularly shoddy piece of programming?

Samsung I7500 :: Virtual Keyboard (K4 Firmware)

Dec 9, 2009

The Samsung Galaxy K4 firmware update includes a new virtual keyboard alternative, named "Samsung keyboard", in addition to the stardard "Android keyboard". (Sorry, I have yet to succeed in taking screen shots; I will post some if I find any.) What are your thoughts on this? There are a bunch of different layouts ("Qwerty", "12 keypad", "20 keypad"), all accessible from a popup menu. All layouts seem to be missing a shift key (relying instead of a popup selection for "abc"/"Abc"/"ABC"/"Numeric and symbols"/"Emoticons"), and there seems to be no press-for-variants feature to access characters with umlauts. You can set the keyboard language. Available languages are: Automatic (based on carrier?), English, German, Dutch, Polish, French, Czech, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

All layouts use T9 prediction, and the dictionary adapts to the selected language. Also, it appears that the dictionary is not shared with the Andoid user dictionary (accessible within Settings->Locale). I like that they've done it. It shows that Samsung have not completely given up support for this device, that they do have developers assigned to it. The keys are nice and large, and they've made good use of the landscape format. I don't know if they are using a context-sensitive key-enlarging-function like HTC have, but my typo rate seems to have decreased. I find the lack of a shift key very inconvenient, especially when entering passwords. Having to open a popup to enter a capital is two, three, maybe four additional taps -- they could have made much better use of long-press and off-key swipes. The lack of the press-for-variants feature means that, if you require umlauts, you must either switch to the appropriate language or, if it doesn't exist, use another keyboard. Since none of the Scandinavian languages are supported, I cannot use this keyboard.

I love the solid build and the ability to customize the phone.

I love the physical keyboard but also having the option of a virtual keyboard.

I love the thousands of available apps.

I love having a video recorder and camera in one.

I love the AMOLED screen.

Android :: Virtual Keyboard - Full Slide-out Keyboard

Nov 9, 2008

I'm getting the G1 next weekend and am wondering how long until a virtual keyboard will be available. I really like the idea of having a full slide-out keyboard but I would also like a virtual one so if I'm not wanting to say much I can just use the virtual keyboard or if I'm in an area where it needs to be quiet I don't need to have the sound of the keyboard sliding open.

HTC EVO 4G :: Virtual Keyboard

Jun 15, 2010

First virtual kb, came from 11 years of Blackberry use. I really like the EVO, it is a lot more powerful than the BB. However, I can not seem to master this kb. I have gone from being able to click out about 35 wpm on a bb, to struggling to get through a 100 character text with this. I have installed "better keyboard" from the market, it did help slightly. I still have the same issues of getting a . when I thought I hit space, an a when I thought I hit s, etc. I know the words fill in on a bar above but that is very hard to watch as you type and makes it even slower.

Is there a good keyboard out that anyone uses? I have no interest in swype, so I am not going to go that route. The problem seems to be the size and shape of the EVO, holding in portrait, the kb is too small and the phone has to be constantly adjusted to keep it from slipping, then of course, if you barely even touch the screen or a button, it acts on that. In landscape, its almost too wide and you have to reach for certain keys and always hit another on your way over. It would help maybe, if there was anyway at all to adjust sensitivity.

Android :: Hide The Virtual Keyboard

Apr 28, 2009

Using the 1.5 SDK. I have an application with a TabActivity and when I change from one tab with edit fields to another that does not need any user input I would like the virtual keyboard to be hidden. I've tried setting android:windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysHidden" on the manifest for the activity that doesn't need user input but it didn't work (maybe because the activity is triggered by a TabActivity).

I've found the method hideSoftInputMethod(IBinder, int) in the InputMethodManager class but I don't know how to get the IBinder object that this method needs.

How do I get that IBinder object? Are there other ways to hide the soft keyboard?

It would be even better if I could make the soft keyboard automatically hide when an EditText loses focus.

Android :: EditText And Virtual Keyboard

Jun 22, 2009

I was fillding with EditText and handling of events, and I was wondering on a strange thing:

If you press some of the keys (for example forward slash '/') on the emulated physical keyboard, the keyevents are called as usual (onKeydown, the KeyListeners etc). If I click on the corresponding virtual key on the onscreen virtual keyboard, all these callbacks do not get called at all! This is strange, given that If I press other keys like alhpanumerical, the events are called.
