Is this even possible? Flight mode turns off everything including wifi....
Apparently the new iPhone will stay connected to wifi even while the screen is locked. This is nice because with my current iPhone,I use about 3-4 megs of data a day even if I never leave my house (which has wifi). It would be nice if the Captivate didn't do that since I have the 200-meg plan with AT&T and I'd like to use my data for web surfing, not checking for email in the background. Would anyone mind checking this for me?View 3 Replies View Related
I have recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (Android 2.1) on Rogers Wireless. I've been having an issue with the wifi on it, it only works intermittently when I'm at home. It will connect to my network without issues, but none of the data-enabled apps can access anything, they just time out. While this is happening my old iPhone (recent android convert) and my Nintendo Wii are able to connect flawlessly. This ONLY happens when I'm at home on my own network from what I've seen, when I'm on the wifi at my work everything works fine. Has anyone seen issues like this or have any suggestions as to what may be causing it? FYI I have tried different wifi channels, currently my router is setup to use TKIP on WPA2 for encryption.View 5 Replies View Related
I've had my Samsung Galaxy X for a whole of about 3 hours now, just tried out the internet on it. Awesome. loved it.Sorted my wi fi out etc Only problem is, I've turned Wi Fi off now but the 3g internet is still on and uploading and downloading when I am not even on a website. Can anyone please tell me how the heck I turn it off? I cant afford a massive billView 8 Replies View Related
I accidentally activated my wifi through the notification bar. As soon as it was activated, i simply tapped it again to shut it down, however, it failed to do so. All that happened was that the wifi had a blue color and off in the bottom. I tried turning it off through the power setting widget, it says that updating wifi. It was stuck like that until i restarted the phone.View 2 Replies View Related
travelling to Europe from the UK and need to turn off all data for the duration of my stay (would cost me $17 per day at my current usage)
This is easily done with one setting on my iPhone, but I am unsure how to get the same done easily with my Galaxy S.I really need to make sure that all data is off in order that I don't come home to a monster bill!
Stop at the screen showing android!!!
what should I do? this phone is driving me crazy, it is used for one day

Is it possible to turn on the 802.11 wireless, while keeping the phone radio turned off?
I was recently on an airplane that had WiFi wireless connectivity (Delta using GoGo). I had my Moment and wanted to try it out. The problem is that the only way I could find to turn off the cell radio, as required by the FAA, is by putting the phone into "Airplane Mode". But, in Airplane mode, I could not get the WiFi to turn on.
So, what I really wanted was not "Airplane mode" but WiFi on and Cell Radio turned off. But I could not figure out any way to do that. Is it possible?
stumbled across this great little app for root only needs super user perm.

i know there are problems with the GPS on this phone. I have read loads of posts and tried changing various settings but am pinning my hopes on Froyo fixing it or else i will seriously be looking at returning phone as not fit for purpose. I am sorry but i feel that having paid ?380 for something advertised as having GPS, maps, navigation etc that i should be able to have this in a usable fashion. I dont want to be told its a phone, sat nav is a bonus. It was advertised and sold as having sat nav and this should be workable. OK sorry rant over, just trying to head off some of the comments i am sure will be posted, anyway back to the problem.
when i start maps or navigation it shows a small radar looking icon in top left hand corner, indicating it is looking for satellites, yet at other times this does not appear and it shows "Searching for GPS" at bottom of screen. The manual states this icon means GPS activated. When it is not showing does this mean that the GPS has not turned on despite maps or Navigation being chosen. I can drive about for an hour with this message showing but navigation not starting. The strange thing is if i have map on the screen it will show my location moving yet still say searching for GPS, if thats the case then how can it update maps, how does it know where i am. I an really annoyed at the lack of this function (can you tell). Thanks for any insight into this.
what are the settings do you have to change in order to completely stop any data connection? I have an unlimited data plan so I don't care now that there is a lot of apps using my connection, but going overseas soon, the roaming charges are really expensive. I found some settings (like sync) that I can configure not to use data connection but I am not sure if these are all.View 8 Replies View Related

Was updating my SGS when it got stuck on the screen where Android is digging in the dirt and says Downloading... do no turn off target.
Windows is also giving me an error "The Program can't start because RAPI.dll is missing from your compter. Try Reinstalling the program to fix this problem"
I tried reinstalling Kies but nothing happens.... Why oh why couldn't Samsung have just let us update OTA.....
when it was time for an upgrade i decided to go android with the galaxy s, and when i got it i loved it, but after 3 weeks its just stopped working, wont turn on, wont charg or anything. does anyone know why this might be the case and if theres anything i can do other than sending it back which i cant do at the moment as im out of the country.View 3 Replies View Related
I bought my new Samsung Galaxy S phone 3 weeks back. I am quite satisfied with it, but i have quite an irritating problem, my GPRS keeps on going back every now and then, like once every 2 minutes and then i have to turn the Flight mode on/off to bring it back. It might not be a problem in countries where 3G is available but here in India it's quite unsettling to see such a nuance in such a wonderful OS. I know it's not a problem with the carrier(Vodafone for me) as nokia phones work seamlessly in the same area.View 1 Replies View Related

From what I can tell, if you turn on WiFi the phone never sleeps even in standby mode. Is this a known issue or has anyone else noticed this. I noticed this using Spare Parts and turning off and on things until I saw it was wifi that keeps it awake.View 4 Replies View Related
I just bought a galaxy s (I9000) I connect to my home wireless gateway through the phone, enter the WPA key and it connects all fine. But then when I try to browse any webistes I get a 404 error and if I try syncing facebook or anything else I get an error saying the server could not be contacted. wireless works fine on my mum's laptop and the phone is showing up in the devices list of my router's interface.View 1 Replies View Related
I have a very basic question and I hope somebody can help me. I want to buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S phone and use it exclusive as a WiFi phone in the USA. Can I buy an unlocked phone and expected to work with WiFi without having to have an agreement with the phone companies? I don't mind paying $600+ for the phone, but it is the monthly fees from the phone companies that I would like to avoid. I am almost certain that this would work, but I just wanted to ask that question before I actually buy the phone. I want to make sure that the phone companies and/or Samsung have not done something that would prevent me from doing this without a contract.View 4 Replies View Related
I recently purchased a GTI-i9000. GPS on it is terrible and I have ready many forums with other users experiencing the same problems. I was thinking, and wanted to clear up a cloudy understanding. On my previous phone (iPhone 3G), when I was not connected to WiFi, I was still able to browse webpages etc, albeit slowly. Is that called GPRS? The form of data?
On my Galaxy, I cannot do this at all. If I am not connected to a WiFi connection, I have 0 internet. I'm just wondering if this is the cause of my dodgy GPS. Is there a setting i need to change or does the SGS not do internet if you're not connected to WiFi. I live in Australia if that helps at all.
My SGS (well its actually my wife's but I use it also) will not connect to WiFi networks, other than the one we have at home. If we are out, the phone will be able to see lots of WiFi networks, but it cannot connect to any of them as it says the signal is poor. Other people can be sat right next to other with other phones and have no problem connecting and they have strong signals. At home it will connect, but even then there is only one bar of signal, even though the router is in the same room. It appears that the phone just cannot get a strong enough signal to connect.View 1 Replies View Related

i know this has been asked but so far i haven't found any satisfactory answer or solution. i have been having a battery drain simply because my wifi would just turn on by itself for no apparent reason. There is definitely something causing this but it seems nobody has any good explanation.View 5 Replies View Related
Has anyone else noticed that on the Galaxy S, the Wifi will stop to respond after a few disconnects? I usually have wifi off to save battery, but now and then some application will turn it on and after I stop it (either using the message bar or settings) the wifi stops working. Under settings it will be greyed out and say something like "Shutting down..." but you cannot click it again, turn it on or anything else. A reboot works but thats kind of annoying.View 2 Replies View Related
I have a Macbook Pro, its connected to Ethernet & I want to share the internet connection with my Samsung Galaxy S. I enabled Internet Sharing on my Mac, selected Airport under ports & provided a WEP password. On my Galaxy S, I select my macbook on the list of WiFi n/w, provide the password, but it never gets connected & there is no error msg either. Has anyone else tried this? Any ideas on why this is happening? BTW, I'm able to connect my Galaxy S to my wireless router at home.View 2 Replies View Related
Last week I was in the US and had gotten the AT&T pay-as-you-go sim. It charges 1c/kb and I thought that's not too bad since I *only* get outlook and yahoo email. Well, *before* I knew it, it sucked up $14.40 for internet access....Frantically called AT&T customer service and after a long wait, they told me that my device had access the service and downloaded 1.5Mb! I asked them if there was a way to turn off the GPRS(since I was mostly interested in their $2/day unlimited calling service) and they said they don't have a way to turn it off Tried a bunch of things like turning off auto-sync (in settings) etc...but STILL I ended up paying $40 by the end of the day!!
Is their a way to turn off GPRS completely and also monitor what applications are accessing the service? All I have to go by is what AT&T says at the website!
I am on Galaxo 1.6.3 , its an amazing o.s btw , currently I am facing a little problem , my phone does not auto connect to my home wifi , I have to manually go into settings >> wifi settings >> and then select my wifi from there , since it requires time and effort I end up using my 3G network which is burning an hole in my pocket.View 5 Replies View Related
Does Froyo Fix the DHCP Netmask issue on the Galaxy S? Does it actually take the DHCP info from DNS and populate netmask as 255.255.255.0 instead of 255.0.0.0 on some networks? THIS IS ALL I WANT OUT OF FROYO! I want to finally be able to connect to my workplace's damn Wi-Fi. I take a lot of crap from my Motorola Droid and iPhone coworkers because of this enormous issue with the Galaxy S.

I'm having the dreaded "Unable to Scan for Networks" in the WIFI. Can I fix without doing a reset? I'm on vodafone UK. All the info I have been reading points to me having to do a master reset. Or deleting a file if my phone is rooted. Can I root my phone to do this? or is this not possibly on a voda contact mobile. After I accidentally removed my WiFi from my phone. Then added it again. Does anyone have any idea as to whether Froyo will address the wifi issues on the SGS?My wife's phone will not connect to any wifi hotspot unless she is virtually sitting on the router. At home it is ok as the router is in the same room, but she has tried to connect to many wifi hotspots in public places and she can never connect as the signal is so weak.Other people with iPhones, HTC etc connect with no problem, but hers will not do anything. Is this something that Froyo will address, or is it more a hardware issue with the SGS?View 5 Replies View Related

I have a lot of issues with my device. It hangs frequently and the WiFi signal is weak and drops after a few minutes no matter what. I have the latest firmware so that isn't the problem. Many apps seem to run in the background even though I didn't start them and when I exit them the right way with the back button they're still running. What to do? I like the phone but it doesn't seem very stable so far.View 5 Replies View Related
My school has an open wifi network. When you first use a device on the network, it presents an authentication page so that you can get full access. I authenticated, and my Vibrant connects fine and is assigned an IP. I checked with the network admin, and my MAC address is registered correctly in their system.
But I can't get any data. Sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect I can load one or two pages, but then data stops.
Other Android users (Nexus One, Droid X) don't seem to have this problem. I'm trying to get the network pro to come and help me out with this, but it seems to be a problem with my phone. Yet my wifi connection at home works fine.
A few days ago I was using my schools wifi with no issue (its unsecured)
Now I can connect to the wifi but pages will simply not open (try again later or whatever the generic error message is)
I reset everything I could find still nothing.
Very happy with the i9000 in the last few days of ownership, using launcher pro in place of stock but otherwise mostly unchanged. One issue we have is that after being at home overnight on WiFi, the phone doesn't automatically re enable 3g. To restore the mobile data you have to go into the network operator selection and re select Optus (our carrier here in Aus). Leaving it on auto doesn't help, and you have to manually choose it each time (ie: it "forgets" what I selected or something). Using apndroid to mangle the apn on/off doesn't help. Restarting the phone fixes it but obviously not ideal.
Have tried entering the code to change it to gsm only instead of the default wcdma/gsm auto with no benefit. When the mobile data is working, it happily switches between 2g and 3g, but will sometimes simply stop working as per the wifi overnight problem and I have to manually select the operator again. This happens very randomly and can go several days without drama, our only a few minutes. While this data won't connect, the phone capabilities aren't affected and you can make and receive calls fine. In fact if you dial a number it sometimes causes the data to re connect.
I noticed something is wrong with my phone. when i enter the browser after switching from 3G to wifi, the screen will flicker... anyone know any fix for this? or the reason the screen flickers?View 4 Replies View Related
