HTC Magic :: Unlocking And Rooting From Rogers
Jun 10, 2009I got my HTC Magic from Rogers almost a week ago and so far am loving it. Here are some of the issues or unknowns I found so far:
1. Found out you cant store and run apps from the SD card. That makes the SD card only half useful since it can only be used for music, vids, photos, etc. I hear the new version of Android might fix this.
2. I couldn't find anywhere information about the applications and whether they continue to run in the background after they are closed. Is there a way to close or kill applications? Should I even care if they're closed or not?..................

Oct 16, 2010just updated my Htc hero (GSM) firmware 1.5 to 2.1 through the system settings>update without Rooting it ;( Now it wont go ahead of boot screen, just hangs on the hero screen
1) Tried removing battery/sdcard didn work
2) Recovery mode - It is showing me a Hero with a triangle having " ! " mark
3) In System recovery utiltity (home+power)
- tried wipe data, it works
- but when i try apply sdcard:update.zip -> E:cant open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file/directory).Installation Failed
it also shows me this error : E:can't open/cache/recovery/command

I'm at the beginning of my journey here and still gathering and hunting for information. I've looked around and there are lots of tutorials but none of them answer my noob questions.
Do you need to have your phone unlocked or debranded in order to root?
Will rooting the phone also unlock it?
I've found a place where they guarantee unlocking of this phone but they charge 20$US. If I can root the phone and not having to pay for that it would be great.

Nov 21, 2010I upgraded to my Htc Evo so my Hero is sitting here collecting dust. I want to give this phone to my son so he can text and play games without activating to sprint again.
But heres the Question: Is there a way to root this hero to unlock the sprint mobile network so that he can text anytime and anywhere the phone is on? Right now he can only do it through wifi.

Apr 15, 2010I live and use my HTC Magic in Australia on Vodafone. I'm considering rooting it so I can get Android 2.0 or 2.1. I've read though that doing this stops me from being able to use the GPS and a couple other things. Is this true? If so, what other downsides are there to rooting the Magic? And is there a way to get the best of both worlds? Maybe I can get an app that gives me GPS back?

HTC Hero :: Firmware 2.1 Update Not Working / Phone Turned Off
Oct 24, 2010I have the HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2 Touch and I still do not have the latest firmware 2.1 update on it. I've got as far as changing the year to 2013 and it brings up the request to update the phone. I select to update it and it turns off my phone to install.
It then loads but stops half-way and it just shows a white triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle with an image of a phone underneath. The update does not continue from there. I've tried it at least 4 times and it's done the same every time.

I have a Rogers non-google branded phone with 288mb ram(version 32a)
In a cmd prompt when I typed adb devices it said
"list of devices attached
HT95MNK00979 device"
so anyway.. my first question is, if I screw up, what happens? How likely is it that I will be able to fix it? I have a 2 year warranty so can I sent it in to rogers and have them reflash the original rom?

it says, "grab fastboot.exe from here (HTC - Support - Flashing your Android Dev Phone with a Factory System Image) and place it in the tools directory of the sdk." There is already a fastbook.exe in the tools directory of my sdk. Should I replace it? I may have put it in there a while ago when I first installed the sdk but I don't think I did..
it says, " [optional]. make a backup with nandroid". How exactly do I do this? I've screen shots of the device where it says something about a nandroid backup. will the option to make a backup just show up on my screen? can I just move it from my sd card to my computer after that?
do I do all of this with the device in fastboot? It doesn't really say in the walkthrough. at what point can I not return?

Feb 18, 2009This is my first post and I am new to Android so excuse my ignorance if this is well documented and common knowledge. I have a stock ADP, firmware 1.0, no updates no mods and of course I want to get the latest features such as voice control, latitude etc, and so begins the fun. Why is there nothing official that can be easily found which states what is going on for people that own the ADP? I must have read dozens of articles showing update procedures and claiming to have leaked OFFICIAL developer updates and only recently did i find 2 thread that eventually end with something stating there is NO official update for developer phones yet.
I have 2 gripes about this:
1. Why no official and clear statement from the development team to clarify this before people start scrambling desperately to install leaked versions that are false? (I know I almost did) 2. Why as a developer do I have to wait for features that are already available to end users?

Are these official Samsung versions? If so, why does Kies not offer to upgrade my phone if there are later versions? If not and I upgrade to a later firmware version:Which version should I upgrade to? Do I need to root the phone? What happens if Samsung release later versions - will there be a conflict etc? Will it affect any of the apps I currently have? Will there be a problem upgrading to v2.2 Froyo?

The reason i would like to upgrade the firmware is the lag - I can live with it, but if there is a solution I would rather not. If I could remove the lag it woulld be the perfect phone.
One thing I am not too keen on, is ending up in a similar situation to my jailbroken iphone - became a pain in the arse everytime a new version of the OS was released.
