HTC Incredible :: Watching Movies / Shows From Sites Or Files In Dark

Jun 10, 2010

Has anyone found a way of watching Movies/Shows from sites or from files on the phone, in the dark without having the Home/Menu/Back/Search button lighting up? I was watching shows on cbs.com last night, and those little lights are brighter then the screen itself.

HTC Incredible :: Watching Formatted Movies On Phone?

Jul 22, 2010

So I tried googling and poking through a ton of different forums (this one, nexusone forums, etc.) regarding formatting video to be used on the DInc. The general consensus was to use Handbrake with the iPhone settings to convert video. But that was taking forever. What is weird is that I bought the Sandisk 32GB card, and I put a number of copies of the new season of Dr Who on it (all avi's, unsure what codecs were used for it though). They're all smaller than the native resolution of the phone (something like 366xsomething). But neither Meridian nor DoubleTwist can play them. I wasn't sure if it was card related, so I moved the files off the card onto the phone (which took forever, btw) and it still would freeze up opening the video. So I'm guessing I'm still going to have to convert the files, which is fine - but does anyone know of software better than Meridian to do so?

It's funny, I watched the entirety of Clerks on my LG Voyager (after converting it to 3gp or whatever that weird format was), and doing that seemed simpler than watching videos on my DInc. As an aside, we were watching the iPhone4 vs EVO video on my fiance's MotoDroid, standing outside a VzW store talking it up with an old co-worker of mine from when I used to work there, and the video froze. She shut it off, then turned it back on, and it started power cycling (M loop, whatever you want to call it). I spent 3 hours digging through forums looking for a way to recover her phone without factory reset, couldn't get anything to work, so we factory reset and it continued to power cycle. Totally bricked. Anyone know if this is normal?

We already ordered a replacement phone for her, as it was stock to begin with. Just find it rather weird, especially since it had happened shortly after we installed the latest version of LauncherPro on her phone. I guess the inner-troubleshooter in me is determined to figure out the cause-- especially if LauncherPro and/or YouTube interacted funny, I thought it'd be a really useful thing to give to the developers.

HTC Incredible :: Movies / TV Shows With ACC Protection

Jun 28, 2010

I would like to move my Family Guy episodes and perhaps Caddyshack or any other great movie to my DInc but alas iTunes has shut me down with AAC protection. Some of the other posts I saw suggested using Doubletwist which I downloaded on my Mac and seems like it would work, yet the files are still protected so that doesn't help. Another said to use FairGame to take the DRM protection off of the file so I can transfer them, but that didn't work either. Is there ANY easy answer that won't cost me anything or be difficult to do? Anybody out there already do this on their DInc?

Android :: Watching AVI Movies Stored Through 3G Network?

Sep 12, 2010

Well, I'm about to get my first Android phone but being able to watch avi. movies or convert them while watching them is a deal breaker for me. On the iPod touch/iPhone there is an app called Air Video that allows you to watch movies stored on your computer through the wireless network. You can either convert them or watch them live while they are being convert. The quality of the videos are very good.

I don't like converting avi. to mp4 on my computer because it takes a long time and it also reduces the quality of the movie and makes the movie very blurry on my phone/ipod touch. So anyways, I was wondering if there was an app that is similar to Air Video and another plus would be being able to do all this over the 3G network instead of on WiFi. The reason why I ask this is because the WiFi network in our house is shoddy and the 3G network seems to be so much faster compared to our WiFi.

General :: Using Wireless Mouse While Watching Movies?

Jun 7, 2012

I know that a tablet is best used via the touch screen, however I intend to connect my Android Tablet to the TV to watch movies and TV shows from the comfort of the sofa.I've just bought a wireless mouse which works with my Tablet, that is until I want to watch movies or TV shows.

While sat on the sofa, several meters from the TV and Tablet I can control the Tablet with my wireless mouse. No great shakes there but my problems start when I want to watch movies or TV shows. If I watch anything that I captured with my camera or Tablet I can control the aps by bringing up menus so that I can press pause, play fast forward or rewind.

However when I want to watch a movie or TV show I can not find a way to bring up a menu so that I can select pause, play forward or rewind. The only option I get is that when I right click I am kicked out of the movie/TV show and back to the general menu of all my available movies and TV shows.

why I can access playback menus for home produced video but I can't with movies or TV shows?

Motorola Droid X :: Watching Movies Copied Via USB Through HDMI

Jul 17, 2010

It's been widely reported that the X can only output video via HDMI that was recorded using it's internal camera. Many have speculated that this is due to the non-implementation of HDCP on the HDMI port. I have found that this is untrue. I took some video, compressed it to .3gp (which is Droid's native video codec) in Sorenson Squeeze to 854 x 480 (Droid's screen resolution), copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and played it out on a 37" HD monitor. It looked ok -- but it was only 480p.

Then I took the same video, compressed it to .3gp in Sorenson Squeeze to 1280 x 720 (Droid's HDMI output resolution limit), copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and played it out on the same 37" HD monitor. And it looked very good -- as it was 720p. Finally, just for the hell of it, I took the same video, compressed it to .3gp in Sorenson Squeeze to 1920 x 1080, copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and it would not play out at all. Not a surprise -- as the decoder in the X is known to not handle 1080p.

The key to success seems to consist of 3 parts:
1. Do not let the Droid convert the video upon import when prompted only select "No, Just Copy".
2. Also, if you are encoding to 1280 x 720 (720p) you must convert to .3gp at a combined bitrate (audio + video) of no higher than 1.5 Mb/s. In my tests, the X could not playback bitrates that were higher that 1.5Mb/s.
3. Finally, remember that the Droid's SD card file format is FAT32 so files cannot not exceed 2GB.

It is worth noting that Sorenson Squeeze is an expensive compression tool that does multipass encoding. I'm sure there's open source encoding software in the wild that will convert video to .3gp but I kinda doubt it will be multipass. Regarding runtime, it's worth repeating that I tested 1.5 Mb/s to find out what the upper limit was for external HD viewing. To be honest, the video quality would probably be perceived as quite "watchable" to a number of people 1 Mb/s.

If I were traveling and wanted to have some movies on hand and I WAS NOT sure if I'd ever be jacking-into an external monitor. I'd go for a MUCH, MUCH lower bitrate and resolution -- especially for display on a 854 x 480 4.3" screen. However, if I knew I was going to be largely watching on an external HD monitor. I'd go for the 1.5Mb/s maximum. So, you're probably wondering about the effect of that FAT32 2GB file limit: 2GB = 17,179,869,184 bits
At 1.5Mb/s: 1.5Mb/s = 1,500,000 bits/s
17,179,869,184 bits divided by 1,500,000 bits = 11,453 Seconds
11,453 seconds = 190 Minutes
190 Minutes = 3 Hours 10 Minutes

And at 1Mb/s:
1Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits/s
17,179,869,184 bits divided by 1,000,000 bits = 17,179 Seconds
17,179 seconds = 286 Minutes
286 Minutes = 4 Hours 46 Minutes
So, you can see that from a Feature Film point of view the FAT32 2GB limit is not an issue due to Droid's apparent maximum bitrate cap of 1.5Mb/s. From a storage volume point of view, I purchased a 32GB Micro SD Card for $99 with the phone. And that 32GB card should be able to store 50 Hours 40 Minutes of video at the highest bitrate of 1.5Mb/s. Which, at an average of 2 hours per Feature Movie, equates to 26 movies.

Before this, I had the movie The Book of Eli on my computer, MPEG4. I put that on my phone- sound, but not video. Converted to H.263, got both, but video was terrible quality. Near unwatchable. HTC Desire :: Watching Movies Kills My Battery - Type Of Video File That Consumes Less Power?

Aug 25, 2010

Watching a 30 min episode of a tv show, uses 25% of my Desire's battery life. Watching a 90 min movie uses 75% (funnily enough!)

Obviously, powering the lovely screen uses up a lot of juice. Just wondering whether there is any particular type of file that is more CPU intensive to decode and run, than others?

I currently use Mpeg 4 format. The program I use to convert my avi's to mpeg4, gives me different quality level options.

Would it make a difference to power consumption if I was to convert the avi's to a lower quality mpeg4 file?

General :: Downloading Files From Hosting Sites

Jul 3, 2012

I have a problem with downloading files from hosting sites such as rapidgator, hellshare etc. On default browser and on Google Chrome files aren't downloading at all or there is downloaded a file which has for example 26kb or so, while I am trying to download files about 400-700mb. On Opera Mobile the files are downloading, but if I will minimize the browser and start any other app, the downloading process is stopped. I am really surprised with that because a few months ago I also had HTC Desire Z and I could've download any file with the stock browser and. while downloading, check any app I wanted.

I have Asus Transformer Pad 300 with Android ICS (newest update). When I download files about 10mb everything is ok, so I assume it's the size problem or maybe file extension, but I tried the app called All files download (or something like that) which has been recommended in a similar post (but that user had SGS3) and it didn't worked either.

HTC EVO 4G :: Movies - Conversion Of Own Personal Video Files

Apr 30, 2010

I was hoping to get some feedback from those of you that are in the advanced category for smart phones and media. I'm gearing up and converting many of MY videos to MP4 in anticipation of watching them on my hotly anticipated new 4.3" screen.

In regards to the conversion of MY OWN PERSONAL video files, I had some questions about settings and the process for making the videos look and work best on the EVO. I realize this question may be premature given the actual phone isn't out yet, but any info would be appreciated.

My main questions are:

What settings people would recommend for using Handbrake to convert the files?

What settings will use the least amount of resources and memory, but will still give the best playback/image possible on the EVO?

I have waded through what information I could find on the forum in the EVO and Incredible (closest match to EVO) threads and this is what I have found in case anybody wants to use it for reference. THANK YOU to those posters who have supplied the following information, it got me moving in the right direction.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Programs available to convert files to MP4: (These were the most often mentioned, but there are several others available to use as well)

XDA Video Encoder - [APP][REF]Video encoding GUI - xda-developers - Appears to be free, instructions listed on web link for operation. "Probably the best movie converter. It was designed for converting movies for older, less powerful HTC devices, but it'll still work great for this. Extremely easy to use, and produces small file sizes with great quality. Works pretty fast too. I highly, highly recommend it for converting movies to use on Android phones."

ANYDVD - SlySoft AnyDVD | any dvd, region free, dvd copy, copy dvd movies, dvd decoder, dvd ripper, macrovision, dvd copying software - Free for 30 days, $$$$ after that. Updates often and seems to be regarded as best for decrypting files.

DVDFAB - DVD Copy Software from DVDFab | Copy DVD to PSP, DVDR or iPod - Free for 30 days, then $$$ after that. Full package looks like you are able to convert files for all kinds of uses and to all types of players including mobile phones.

Handbrake - HandBrake - Free. Seems to be the most popular here on the android forums. Easy to use and so far has done a good job converting for me.

DVD Converter Pro - InterTech DVD Converter - Free trial, then $$$. 1 comment from poster "I'm impressed by dvd converter pro. It worked well and seems to be much easier than dvd fab. I will probably purchase it. The incredible photo viewer is not well suited for displaying videos though."
-------------------------------------------------------------

Tutorials and help: (comments taken from different threads here on Android forum)

- Well, to get the ball rolling, here are quite a few guides on how to convert DVD to an Android-compatible standard h.264 video format.

Guide, How To, Tutorial and Article list - VideoHelp.com

- Jerry Hildenbrand (Gbhill) @ Android Central wrote a great how to on video conversion using Handbrake as well as Double Twist on the Android Central Blog. It can be found HERE

- Here is another, more general, video guide which discusses Handbrake in more detail for those who are interested. I personally like the step by step guides with lots of pictures... I consider myself an advanced technical user, but sometime I just want to get it done quick.

Here are the links...
The Power User's Guide to Video Encoding with Handbrake | Maximum PC
The Last DVD and Blu-Ray Ripping Guide You'll Ever Need | Maximum PC

- If you use Handbrake uncheck the CABAC entropy coding under the Advanced tab. You can use it but it will limit you to yxflash (a pay for app) for the player. I can say that if you rip correctly it looks amazing on the AMOLED screen of the N1. Even Spongebob has amazing color resolution. But thats 90mb per 12 minute episode.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution and Settings Comments:

- I am using DVDfab. I have read that they should be set to 480 X 272 and use the preset setting for apple tv. I have encoded some to mp4 and they play really nice on my computer.

- I would recommend keeping either the horizontal or vertical resolution the highest the device supports which is either 800 vertical or 480 horizontal.

- Isn't the display resolution 800x480? So how did someone come up with 480x272? To get the best picture, I would set it to 800x? or ?x480.

- If it's a dvd, you want to keep it at the same resolution of 720x480 (or whatever the 4:3 res is, but why you would use 4:3 on this phone is beyond me).

- 480x272 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, the ratio that is used for movies as that is the ratio that most widescreen TVs are (e.g., 720p = 1280x720 and 1080p = 1920x1080).

I think 800x450 would be the best resolution as it's the closest to the native resolution of the display while still maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio -- important if you want the proportions to look how they're supposed to look. Use this resolution only if the source video is HD, though. DVD videos are 720x480 (I think 720x400 is viewable since it's letterboxed), so encoding to any resolution above that would just be a waste of space by creating a larger video file.

- Yeah, I just encoded a movie using 480x272 and it looks great. Even on my 15" laptop screen. I think when you encode a movie from 5 gig to 800 meg it probably doesnt make a huge difference if you use 800 x 480 or 480 x 272.

- Folks, this is a classic debate, but recording the vids at full Inc resolution has drawbacks with no gains (unless you also plan on playing them back on a bigger display- laptop is example).

1. Drains more battery
2. Takes up over twice the space

Please download a video for PSP or iPod, iPhone (or format one this) and you will see that you will not notice a difference between the vids on a 3.7" display.

Output from the composite video of the Inc will also not use the higher resolution either. Composite video out is the constraint there. Not 720p output like the EVO (that puppy will run hot outputting that res to a display).

- So i put a movie on my Incredible that was set to the 480 x 272. It plays perfect and looks perfect.
