HTC :: How Long It Will Take For Desire 2.1 For Shut Down?
Apr 22, 2010
With today's unofficial announcement of a new Android 2.2 (Froyo) and rumors about release date (19th of May on Google I/O conference) I just wonder how long it will take HTC to deliver new Android for Desire... or we will stuck for ages as a Hero?

My HTC Desire no longer shuts down, I sometimes need to shut down just to help keep the phone working at its best but when I power off the spinning circle just keeps spinning saying shutting down. I have left it for a couple of hours before and its still stuck there, never used to have this problem with my phone when I first got it.I am running an Orange branded phone with Android 2.1. I really don't like this Orange 2.1, its pants and alot slower than a stock 2.1 or the new 2.2.

My desire takes ages to shut down, I'm talking like a couple of hours or more!! the only other person I know with one is having the same problem. I was watching a couple of threads on this subject with various solutions but nothing definative. I'm on Orange, not many apps installed really. This is the only problem i have with my desire, the phone is awesmoe otherwise. I would love it even more if I could turn it off when i wanted to tho

This is my first post, so please be gentle. My Desire takes more than 5 minutes to shut down when I turn it off at night. Is this normal, or is it likely that a rogue app is preventing a speedy shut down?

IF i want to turn the phone off it will go to shutting down and continue to do this for hours the only way to sort this is to remove the battery, is there a fix or is anyone else having this problem ? this hard core shut down cannot be doing the phone any good.

What possible reason could there be for you to code your apps so that they switch on in the background when the phone is turned on and use up precious battery life?
Or, why would you code your apps to stay on after I, the user, have hit the back button because I no longer want your app to run?
I mean, REALLY! Yes, I own up to being a newbie Android user, and what I don't know could fill the Library of Congress. Still, this is common sense we're talking about here. I've done some industrial app development and Enter/Exit, On/Off are basic pieces of logic in the main loop of an program in any language.
The only reason that we phone users need task killer apps is because you developers insist on creating apps that don't know when the f**k to turn themselves off.
And, it seems to me like you, the app developers, are one of the main reason why these phones have such crappy battery life. I mean, my Samsung Instinct, as bad as it was, got 18 to 24 hours of life off of one charge. With the Hero, I'm lucky if I can get 10 hours, and that's even with configuring my email download to only three times per day!
This is not hard, people. You code the app to stay off until, I, the user, manually turn it on. AND, you also code it to turn off when I, the user, hit the back button.
Yes, I understand that there are certain apps that it is advantageous to keep running in the background. So, fine, make it so those keep running. BUT, there is no possible reason for apps like Flashlight, or BBC News, or Camera, or SprintTV to have to run all the time in the background!
I am so tempted to just trash the lot of you. If I did, maybe I might not have as much functionality, but my teenager would be able to reach me late in the day because my phone battery would still have juice.

So I just got my HTC Desire. And when I turn it on I have to wait for like 8 to 10 seconds before the HTC slogan pops up. Is that normal?

I just bought an HTC Desire a few hours ago after having been tempted to get it having seen a colleague's Legend. Anyway, the manual that comes with it doesn't really cover that much, and the only information about that battery I can find is on the beginning where it says that it takes about 3 hours to fully charge it. However, it doesn't mention how long you should charge it on your very first usage: until the LED-light turns green, or more (like when I had to charge my old Nokia for 8 hours the first time)? If anyone would lend a helping hand, I'd really appreciate it.

I received my Desire on Saturday, I'm not very happy with the battery performance at all so far. All automatic updates are off and 3G/Wifi disabled. Yesterday I unplugged it at 0630 (at 100% battery), and despite very little use it was totally drained by 4pm. Today I haven't used it at all (as a test) and it looks like it's only going to be fractionally better. When I check the Battery stats for today 'Cell Standby' is at 74% and 'Phone idle' is at 18%. My question is, 3 days into ownership is this poor performance normal or do you think there's a problem with the battery?

I am seriously considering getting this phone but one of the things that is worrying me is the fact that long text messages are automatically turned into mms. What constitutes a long text message?I often go over the 160 characters mark which isn't a problem as I have free sms but obviously will have to pay for mms.

After a (brief) look around here, I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to change tracks by long pressing the volume keys?
It seems this is possible on the nexus one. How would I (can I?) put this on my desire.
Would I have to root to get it to work or is it something that is/might come with 2.2?

While browsing, I often like to open a linked page in a new window, so do this via long pressing the link. However, it seems to me to be totally random whether long pressing a link brings up the context menu (which is what I usually want), or goes into text selection mode.
How do you control over which of these two actions occurs when long pressing a link?

Before I updated to android 2.2 and updated to latest Googlemaps the navigation was perfect. It calculated the route in seconds and was a joy to use. Since the updates, it is taking ages to calculate route, so long in fact that I exit the programme and start again, and then I just give up and dig out my atlas.

When you're in the browser long pressing on the back button takes you straight to the history page, very useful.

So I realized after getting a calendar reminder, the lock screen just stays on until you dismiss it. So then I checked by just turning the EVO without a reminder to see if the lock screen would shut down and the backlight just stays on that way as well.. Can others test this out and see if there screen shuts off or is there a separate setting for the lock screen?

For some reason whenever I now use the keyboard on my LG 4X HD the phone says aloud the key I'm pressing. I don't even know what it's called, perhaps "keypress vocals"? Can't find where to switch it off or even turn down the volume, which is really loud, very annoying as it does it even when the phone is on mute. Searched the settings, no luck. I'm going to be travelling a lot on planes and trains in the next few weeks and I really don't want people listening to what I type. I think on some forum somewhere mentioned that it could be a Driving Mode setting, but I can't find that anywhere either.

I've found that the stock clock/timer app alarm on my LG Eclipse running ICS 4.0.4 won't shut off if I leave the main app screen to go do something else on the phone while it ticks away in the background. The only way to get the alarm to stop seems to be to reboot the phone. If I leave the timer ticking in the foreground it shuts off normallyt when the acknowledge "ok" is pressed. I tried contacting LG about it, but haven't heard anything back.
