HTC Droid Eris :: Interesting Comparison - Layout Of Components

Mar 26, 2010

Interesting article comparing not-our-phone to an iPhone. That in itself is an interesting comparison. What I found most interesting was the layout of the components. Not sure if it's identical in our phones as it is in the Nexus One, but it was pretty cool to see.

HTC Droid Eris :: Interesting Photo/Video Comparison

Dec 4, 2009

Droid vs Eris Pics & Video

Found this topic on the Droid forum. I find it pretty interesting and pretty interesting that the Eris can keep up with the Droid and that no flash isn't as big of an issue as you would think.

Might change some minds if the flash feature is something you thing is big when deciding between Eris and Droid.

HTC Droid Eris :: Interesting Conversation With VZW Tech On Silent Bug

May 22, 2010

I talked with a VZW tech just a few minutes ago.I described her the silent bug problem on 2.1.She said she is a Droid user and her daughter has an Eris. She said she had frequent freezeup on her Droid and now she reccomends to do one reboot every day. She says she had not had a problem since she has been doing this. She made a mark on my file about my complain and recommended to try the once-a-day reboot for a week. If the problem persists, the store will issue a new phone.I will try this reboot thing each night, will see how it goes.I am a bit worried about the exchange they perhaps would give me a refurb, and what is the guarantie that I won't end up with the same problem.

HTC Droid Eris :: Interesting Exchange Security - Pattern Unlock Bug

May 21, 2010

I did the manual OTA update to 2.1 and once I re-setup my exchange account it enforced the security policy (no surprise there thank god for LockPicker!). The Pattern Unlock stayed as well. So I would have to pattern unlock THEN input the 4 digit alphanumeric (major PITA) So after installing lockpicker I only had to pattern unlock - no problem.

Well I've had the dreaded "no-audio" bug a couple times since upgrading so I decided to try a hard reset before pursuing a warranty replacement. This time I did the same thing, setup my Exchange account and installed LockPicker. Now I do NOT have the pattern unlock. Under Security -> Screen Unlock Pattern I only have "Change Unlock Password" and there doesn't appear to be any way to enable the Pattern unlock.

Here is where it gets interesting. My friend has an Eris as well, is on the same exchange server and got 2.1. He is in the same boat that I was PRE 2.1 upgrade where he has the pattern unlock AND the password (I hipped him to LockPicker) and is now where I was with only the Pattern Unlock. Under his Security -> Screen unlock it is the same as mine, with only "Change Unlock Password".

Now not have the pattern unlock is not the end of the world, I just liked having that small bit of security...just curious if anyone can find a way, short of another hard reset, to get Pattern Unlock back. I'm guessing that the issue is that I didn't enable pattern unlock before setting up Exchange and allowing it to enforce that security policy.

HTC Droid Eris :: Replacing Sense Components

Aug 25, 2010

I'm trying a run without sense to hopefully relieve a lot of the lag problems I've been having. I know I should root, but I don't want to while I'm still under warranty and I'd like to give it a try without to see if I would like it without sense. I have launcher pro installed with home switcher and that seems to have changed over fine(with one incident where my sense home came up). The problems I'm having are with the messaging and dialer apps. I've installed handcent and like it, but I still get the notifications for the sense messaging app, so now I get two every text messaged. Also I've installed Dialer one, but the green phone button still fires up the stock dialer. Is there any way to fully replace these parts without rooting? I also really want the calendar app back, is the launcher pro one similar enough? I like seeing the whole month and being able to scroll with just the widget.

All great website I have been reading for months. I have a Yahoo email question. When I use the program "mail" on my Eris and input my email and password it automatically uses an imap server. I notice that on the imap server I cannot use WiFi to check my email. When I use the Yahoo mail as a pop server it works perect on WiFi. I don't understand the difference. Which is better imap or pop?

Motorola Droid :: Interesting Info Screen

Feb 4, 2010

In a current thread, a forum member asked if there was a way to disable data. Putting my search skills to the test, I found the method ... and a whole lot more. This is really cool stuff. (I thought it was worthy of it's own thread.)

- Open dialer
- Dial *#*#4636#*#*
- Tap on 'Phone Information'
- Press Menu button
- Tap on More
- Tap Disable data connection (Or, Disable data on boot.)

Simply reverse the steps to re-enable your data connection either immediately, or after your next reboot. There's a whole lot more to checkout while you in there.Just be careful. You don't want to screw up anything.

Motorola Droid :: Interesting Discovery About Soft Keyboard

Nov 10, 2009

There has been a lot of discussion on Engadget about whether the soft keyboard has multi-touch. Engadget insists no, and Rob here insists yes.I think I discovered where the problem lies. Josh at Engadget was saying that you had to release one key before pressing another or they would not both register. Rob said in his review that you COULD press them at the same time and both would register. I think I found out that both are right.I did some experimenting and would love to see whether others come to the same conclusion. It seems that when the keys are far enough apart (more than a couple of keys away), then you can, indeed, press the second before the first is released and they both register.BUT, if the keys are close to each other, it will not do this. You have to release one key before pressing the other.I think this must be to avoid accidentally hitting two keys with one finger. So, whether you think this is a good feature or too much babysitting of our typing abilities, it does seem intentional.

Motorola Droid :: Will We Be Able To Retrofit 2.01 Components Into 2.1?

Jan 6, 2010

So the buzzy-buzz around here & elsewhere is that the 2.1 update for the Droid is coming very soon. Some of us have already tasted a few goodies, like the home screen, docking screen and gallery. The gallery I like, but the home screen and docking screen I don't. There's always work arounds in the way of apps; I use Home++ for example. But what if I don't like some of the things that 2.1 brings but I want all of the capability it brings? Will folks be pulling components from the ("old") 2.01 to use in place of them on 2.1? So as an example, could I run 2.1 with the old 2.01 home screen or docking station, etc? Also, will all the apps designed for 2.01 work with 2.1, or could there be problems?

HTC Droid Eris :: UI Layout Being Nuked - All My Shortcuts Go Away

May 10, 2010

My carefully laid out UI pages are being nuked almost instantly by my daughter. All my shortcuts go away, and the HTC widgets (Twitter, photo, weather etc.) are in their place.

I can't figure out what she's doing to achieve this in such a short space of time (is there a 'return to factory defaults' setting?) or how to stop it, while still letting her use apps on the phone.

HTC Droid Eris :: Layout For UI - Use A Different Icon For Actual App Launcher

Sep 18, 2010

I am working on a new layout for my UI and I am running into an icon issue. I am using LauncherPro and I want to use a different icon for actual app launcher. The icon I want to use is actually a bookmark icon for ING Direct (it is a small, orange circle). The only way I can get it to work is if I modify the settings to "swype up" for application launch. Unfortunately, if I press the icon I am taken to the ING direct website. Is there a way to pull the icon out of my phone somehow in order to use it as a 'custom icon'?

HTC Desire :: Interesting Conversation With Three

Aug 24, 2010

Rang the Three call centre today to try and find out when those of us unfortunate enough to have a desire tied to a network would get 2.2, I had some quite comical conversations!

1. First gentleman (with a very English name!) stated that it was down to HTC to relase the update and when they were ready they would issue it out, told me to phone HTC no matter how much I told him he was wrong

2. Called HTC who were excellent and suggested I call Three again and reiterate to them that its down to the network provider to issue an update.

3. Second gentleman again with a very English name said I could simply download 2.2 from Android developers website and load it onto my phone, this would mean I bypass the official Three update.

I was under the understanding that my phone with Three branding was locked to a network? Is this man right that I can download a SDK file (what is a SDK file?) and simply load the new software onto the phone basically rendering it unbranded?

As for the original point of when the official Three upgrades will be issued.... Nothing, had no idea apart from to say not to long!

Motorola Droid X :: Droid X Vs IPhone 4 Video Recording Comparison

Jun 25, 2010

BGR has a video comparison up. The Droid X has much better contrast both indoor and outdoor. The iphone has horrible bloom in highlights outdoors Which crushes all detail. I would even go as far to say that the iPhone video is really bad. Not surpisingly, he declares iPhone the winner because it is 30fps and not 24fps. Personally I couldn't see the difference between the two speeds.

Motorola Droid X : Comparison Benchmark Tests Between 2.2 Dinc And DX?

Sep 6, 2010

Does anyone care to see the comparison benchmark tests between the 2.2 Dinc and DX? I switched back to my Dinc and installed 2.2 and curious if anyone wanted to see them cause i'll post them or video the results. Here are just the graphics.

Graphics:

Total Graphics Score:
DX: 23.985842
Dinc: 26.40585

Draw Opacity Bitmap:
DX: 7.3142858
Dinc: 9.507893

Draw Transparent Bitmap:
DX: 7.356322
Dinc: 6.6428804

Can anyone explain to my why the Dinc gets better graphics than the DX? I thought the DX had a separate GPU which makes the picture quality that much better for the DX and should be smoother. Am i wrong?

HTC Incredible :: Interesting Battery Comment

Nov 3, 2010

I got my Incredible the week it came out. Last week I started having all sorts of problems and had to reformat the phone several times. Anytime I installed or tried to use an app the phone would crash. They sent me a new one. I put my extended battery in, let it go until it died, then turned the phone off and charged over night. I used the battery, if I remember right, around 60 hours. It definitely got me through 2 full days. This was with my normal use. I don't use it as a phone a whole lot. A call every day or two. Mostly texts, brief internet and some apps. My last phone, the same battery would get me through the day but need recharged over night or I'd be needing to throw it on the following afternoon. So I try my standard battery. Let it drain out, charge it over night, typical use again. It's currently at up time of 33.5 hours and awake time of 1:40:00 with 30% battery left. Again, first phone, that battery would need bumped up a couple of times a day on the charger.Granted when I first got the phone I was obsessed with playing with it, but getting almost 24 hours more between two phones (original and the replacement) using the same battery is odd. It's a hardware 2, just like my last phone. Everything seems to match up spec/number wise in About Phone.I know there are a ton of battery threads, but I didn't know where to put this.

Motorola Droid 2 :: Useful Comparison B/w Droid 1 / Droid2

Aug 18, 2010

Seems like I got NO actual feedback from the useless reviews of the droid 2 so far so I'm listing the differences that I have noticed on mine so far.
1: it loads up all your old apps and updates them automatically upon activation, all my droid replacement refurbs didn't do this
2: its faster (can't tell how much until I've used it for a few weeks) but transitions through screens are smoother
3: it comes with motoblur supposedly, I don't even know what this is, so I can't tell any difference, thus anyone who wants a droid 2 but to have it operate like a droid 1...mine does...so uhhh I don't get it.
4: the graphics are different, icons are different, I like both the droid 1 on 2.2 and the droid 2, they are similar but the colors are often reversed in a lot of menus
5: ergonomically it feels better, camera button and volume button are much better feeling.
6: battery door cover looks almost identical but the foam is thicker and it is on their tighter than any of my 4 droid 1's
7: keyboard is much more tactile with the raised buttons and I like the arrows much better than the dpad, however I'll use the pre-installed swype for most my typing since that's what I'm used to.
8: calendar still doesn't scroll in month mode LAME only scrolls in week mode
9: camera mode is faster on droid 2..I think....I initially started it and droid 1 took 10 seconds to load, but after a battery pull they are closer in speed, so hard to say if there's an actual difference.
10: the unlock swipe takes longer on the droid 2...dunno why
11: on droid 1...gmail would always get confused on conversations that were of the same subject line for example if the subject was blank, it would combine emails from different senders....and it wouldn't show the correct email unless you got in the emial out and back in, droid 2 doesn't have this problem, it just shows EVERY email in the list, and you can scroll from oldest to newest...big improvement
12: start up time from power on is about 2 seconds faster on droid 2...not really a marked difference
13: all the icons are different...I actually perfer all the icons on the droid 1 versus the droid 2...but i'm not that 14: forgot to mention they changed the order and icon for the menu / back / home / search buttons on the screen...this is just annoying..why did you have to change the order...lol..I'm used to my back being all the way on the left, now it's 2nd from the right.
15: the alarm is much improved, it used to switch between portrait and landscape as you try to snooze thus cancelling the alarm, it now functions where the entire screen is the snooze and in order to cancel you have to slide to unlock...so to speak
15: Gallery is improved, it allows scrolling up and down with the slider that's found in contacts and it references the dates the pics were taken so you know how old of pics you're searching through
16: Camera has integrated gps function to show where photo was taken
17: separate camcorder app
18: power, volume, and camera buttons feel much better, fit and finish is much tighter
19: usb fits much tighter then before
20: speed while loading memory heavy application is greatly improved such as raging thunder 2, the load time is about 5 seconds faster.
21: has DNLA so you can share photos / audio / video with tv's or computers of the same DNLA technology
22: the market is different: shows comments in their own window AND allows for automatic updating, you can select this per app, I don't remember this being on my 2.2 droid 1???

Android :: Using Customized UI Components In XML

Oct 9, 2009

When I use customized components in XML, could I use a short name of component instead of a fully qualified class name? I wonder if some configuration file exists to do that work.

For example, my customized components is ex.object.RoundRect,

I should use it in xml file like this: <ex.object.RoundRect android:id="@+id/mainRoundRect01" ... />

But

I want to use it like this: <RoundRect android:id="@+id/mainRoundRect01" ... />

Is it possible? Is there a configuration file that can map the fully qualified class name to a short name?
