I can't add a shortcut to a Phone app (it's the app where you enter dial numbers, call someone). Need it on my home screen, but there wasn't it when flashed the rom, in drawer too. And no options which can add it. I'm using CM 10.
This is going to sound odd, but I am trying to make a shortcut on my homescreen to email myself. This seems simple, but it looks like whenever I put a contact in my address book with ANY of my email addresses, it isn't available to be used for a shortcut. Try this and tell me that I'm not going crazy. ...but please TRY it before you post the instructions. I say this because I got my boss to try it and he thought I was being a smartass until he tried to do it. A shortcut to email to myself is really helpful for tracking things and is like a to do list for me.
This question might be specific to HTC phones, but I'm not sure. I have various bookmarks for sites with decent webapps that I'd like to have as icons on my homescreen. What I would like is for their icons to be specific to the site (like iOS or BlackBerry), but instead what happens is I get the ugly red HTC Sense bookmark icon for each of them. Any way to get the site-specific icons to appear (or if it's even possible)?
Issue with a custom ROM I've been playing around with in an attempt at customizing it to meet my personal needs.
Basically, the custom ROM installation removes old, unwanted .apk's from the stock image it is replacing. This is done by a script/command in the META-INF->com->google->android->updater-script file. Here's an excerpt as an example:
However, while the script works perfectly to remove the actual apk's/apps from the device, once the custom ROM is loaded, the old shortcuts (to some of the apps that were uninstalled) remain on the homescreen (these shortcuts are placed there by default by the stock ROM). If you try to tap the shortcut, it simply states something to the effect of "this application is not installed on your device". While these "dead" shortcuts can be moved to the trash bin and deleted from the homescreen, it'd be nice if I could make it so the custom ROM installation automatically does this.
I've tried modifying the Launcher2.apk to reflect the changes I am looking for; but to no avail. In the Launcher2 /res/xml/default_workspace.xml file, I am easily able to specify which apps I do want shortcuts placed on the homescreen for during the installation. But - there doesn't seem to be a way for me to issue a command to remove the old, unwanted shortcuts and these "dead" shortcuts are present nonetheless, despite whatever changes I make to the default_workspace.xml (it does add my "new" shortcuts, though).
Any way that this could be done during the actual custom ROM installation process? And where would I add it to (default_workspace.xml, Android Manifest.xml, framework-res.apk, boot.img...
I've found some other threads discussing the fact that the default shortcut for Facebook is actually just a shortcut to a browser bookmark for Facebook. If you delete this shortcut, you can re-create it, but it has a boring red flag icon. With a custom bookmark app, you could restore this original icon... but only if you know where to find it. Where is that icon stored? It has to be somewhere on the root of the phone. Using root explorer, I can't find it. I'm guessing it's stored inside of an archive somewhere. Any ways to search more thoroughly?
Related: can I somehow use my PC (Windows explorer) to browse the root of the phone?
Or, can I find it somewhere in the original .tar file containing the flash update for the phone?
This was originally going to be a post about missing icons. I'll return to that.
I recently installed a (paid) homescreen app called GDE from a guy at XDA developers. It's wonderful, and gives me a choice of the number of homescreens, transition type, and whether the sequence of screens loops or not (appears endless) It works well and is very smooth. I use the box transitions and it's very impressive.
Back to the icons, which will be of interest to anyone who replaces their homescreen app. When I installed GDE, I was basically given 5 blank homescreens. All my shortcuts were gone and had to be re-installed.
Not so bad, because it gave me a chance to re-organize my device. But, I couldn't find my CNN, ESPN, Facebook icons. That's when I started this post, because I thought they were apps, they are not, they are browser favorite shortcuts on the homescreen.
So, if any of you replace your home app and want to restore these, just open your browser, go to favorites, and long hold on the shortcuts you want to install on home.
I had FB on my phone and when I moved the shortcut from my main screen it disappeared.. Its no where in my APPS, I tried searching for and APP to download but none of them are the same as the one I had on there and I LIKED IT ALOT...
when pressing the home button it takes you to the middle one of the seven homescreens (3 to the left and 3 to the right) is it possible to change this so upon pressing the home button you are taken to the far right homescreen?
Im trying to change the icons on my homescreen but I cant seem to get them to change, ive got the icons i want ([ICON_PACK] The DROID Collection_v1.0 - xda-developers) saved to the root of my SD card, Ive tried to use FolderOrganiser and BetterCut but i cant seem to get them to change on the homescreen, maybe im doing it wrong?
Just moved from an old WM device and separate mobile phone 'combination' to a single HTC Desire to 'do it all'. Pretty pleased so far but still searching (and finding) my way around things. One thing I was wondering about but didn't find an answer to is if you can't set anything so that your mobile operator name shows up in the home screen (just like with a phone). I'm traveling quite often for work and know from experience that one operator is often better in coverage or options than another one - so it would help if I can see the operator that is selected. I know that I can dig into the menus or status bar to see the operator but didn't find a way to show it 'always on' on the home screen.
I'm using Jorte as my organizer and wondered if I can place my Tasks etc. on to a spare home-screen? I'm also using the App. Folderorganizer; Do I need to use this to do it or can I do it through Jorte? What other possibilities are there please? ( without me having to re-write my planner if I install another Calendar app. )
Does anyone know how, if it's even possible, to create a shortcut on your home screen to send a pre-defined SMS message? For instance an SMS to say your on your way home or something my pressing only one icon? I've managed to make it start a new blank message but not open a pre-defined one and send it automatically.
I was just wandering if there is a shortcut to find the exact battery level on my Desire? I know you can go the 4636 route but thats slightly long winded, and most battery widgets/notification bar icons actually seem to use battery (i have properly tested this!). I know you can go into 'about phone' and do it that way but that just shows it as a series of bars, not as an actual figure.
For some reason on the main screen on my new htc desire hd the shortcut images of my contacts seem to be very blurry and hard to make out. Is there a setting to make it more clear, also my contacts list the pics down the side are blurry to. I am sure it was clearer on my other htc I had. Also when I scroll up and down on the main screen the icons seem to very slightly flicker is this normal?
I have pdf document saved on my sd card. I want to create a shortcut to this document on one of my screens. I have created a shortcut using astro manager to this document on my homescreen, however when clicking the shortcut all it does is open the pdf viewer and list all the pdf documents.
I've been having fun customizing the look of my phone and getting more and more out of it. Recently I've been making custom shortcuts as I like having different icons. What I don't like is that there's a label on the Icon. The icon pack I am currently using is Manups Simple Word. What happens is when I create a Shortcut to the market for example the Icon shows in text Market Stock and then beneath it the Label Market. I don't like that if read together it becomes Market Stock Market
Is there a way I can remove the labels from shortcuts? I am currently running Froyo with LauncherPro using folder organizer and I also have anycut. The solution must not involve rooting or using any paid apps as well I can't get paid apps here. I read here Is it possible to strip HTC Sense UI from the HTC Desire? that Helix has the option to remove labels from shortcuts. I'll rather not move to Helix and stay with launcherpro.
