I have a T-mobile UK Desire which arrived on 30th July. I'd like to root it and load froyo but I'm baffled as to which process to use: I have 0.80. Turned on the phone while holding back button which gave these details:
I don't have access to the packaging but I'm fairly sure it said 3.7 Touch Senstive Screen (no mention of AMOLED). I've tried having a look at the black hue the screen displays but this just confused me since I don't really know what i am looking for / got nothing to compare it to. This post has confused me further: "SLCD will NOT work on HBOOT 0.80" lollylost100 Senior Member [FAQ] HBOOT 0.83 / 0.92 / SLCD - rooting and recovery - xda-developers. Was 'lollylost100' correct and I DEFINETLY have AMOLED just because of the HBOOT version? Or is it possible to have 0.80 + SLCD?
I searched many forums but there seems to be no clear way to identify the screen type other than by eye. Clue #1: The box has no mention of AMOLED. Clue #2: P/N is 99HKZ009-00 Clue #3: Made in China Clue #4: Unbranded, unlocked phone bought from a US retailer. My plan is to root. According to what I've read so far, the method depends on the type of screen, SLCD or AMOLED. I need to know for sure, so as not to brick the phone.
If I get a Desire with SLCD instead of AMOLED- does this mean the screen has a true 800x400 resolution instead of what has happened with the Pentile screens? I know, I know, its not really noticeable- but wouldn't hurt to ask right.
MY SITUATION: My phone was rooted with unrevoked3. I tried to install one of the modaco ROMS and did not realize that it was incompatible with my phone because my Desire has a newer type of screen (not amoled) but SLCD. This caused the phone screen to go black on start up and be unresponsive. It was frightening because at first the HTC bootscreen (green HTC on white) had black streaks through it , then goes black. But don't worry it is easily redeemed in below instructions. You need the latest ROM in zip form, put onto your phone and run recovery. Sweet as suzi, you will be debranded (if you were in the process of doing this , remember to make your gold card).
ISSUE: 1. Desire screen not switching on at all even though phone switches on. 2. Phone boots but doesn't go beyond bootloader/recovery/fastboot 3. Can get into recovery even though nothing comes on screen (test: press volume down and power. Wait for 10 seconds. Press volume down. Press power. Phone should vibrate. Wait 20 seconds. Phone should now be in recovery mode.) 4. Can get into fastboot (back+power) 5. No goldcard
CAUSE of ORIGINAL AUTHOR'S ISSUE: I had Aura Sense7.9+AlphaRev S-Off. Cause::Ran a very old RUU just because I wanted to bring things back to stock. The RUU overwrote my HBOOT from 0.93 to god knows what. Turned out, the RUU was for amoled screens and not for SLCD screen. So even though the phone turned on, the screen never did......
I am currently trying to track one down from t-mobile as there has been many shortages lately but, anyway i was told this was because of the screens being changed to SLCD ones from sony. I know that sony do quality products and that but, will there be much difference e.g battery life wise, representing color etc. compared to the AMOLED screens.
My dad has a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant with the Super Amoled screen and I could barley tell the difference between my Htc Desire with Slcd and his phone. The only difference I could see is his blacks were a tiny bit darker.
I got my desire about 3 weeks ago and with a week i dropped it, shattered the digitiser and damaged the SLCD. I decided to "try" and do a self-repair - i bought a new digitixer and LCD (AMOLED). I know for sure that i had an SLCD as it wasn't branded samsung on the rear of the screen unlike its replacement which did. My problem is that the AMOLED won't work. my SLCD works fine (except the damaged pixels) so i know the handset itself is fine.
I just received a branded o2 desire with an slcd screen and have been reading various forum threads saying that making it unbranded may not work because it has an slcd - people have been getting black screens because drivers were not there? Is there a way to unbrand my desire without causing problems and also would i use the unrevoked method or goldcard? Also would i be able to receive OTA updates (official htc ones not o2 ones) after doing this.
This is from my original thread from XDA. It has had numerous hits and questions, which made me realize how so many people have had similar problems. There are solutions on XDA too, but the problem is that there is no one solution to the issue. There are a lot of solutions, but this is a aggregate of all the solutions. I will add FAQs as and when questions are asked, and will keep it as updated as possible. Criticisms, comments and questions are welcomed. HOW TO UN-BRICK AN SLCD BRICKED DESIRE Elementary Frequently asked questions have been included at the latter part of this post. Guide level: Beginner-Advanced (Beginners should read the FAQ at the end, before reading the instructions. Also be well versed with the Requirements I've listed, by reading from the articles listed, before you attempt the methods listed in the post). Caution. CREATING A GOLD CARD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND PRIMARY STEP TO DO BEFORE YOU ROOT YOUR DEVICE, WHETHER IT IS BRANDED OR UNBRANDED. IF YOU EVER WANT TO RETURN YOUR PHONE FOR WARRANTY, THIS IS ESSENTIAL, AND CAN GET YOU OUT OF MOST CASES OF SLCD BRICKS. What was my problem (a.k.a What is an SLCD bricked Desire? a.k.a Why is there nothing on my Desire screen after running an RUU/flashing an incompatible ROM)?......
Flashing kernals is new to me although general rooting is not. Apparently with my new Inc I have the slcd which will only work with a few kernals. What I had to do to get some new ROMs working was flash the ROM, then flash a specific kernal before booting up. That worked and I was able to flash some ROMs that I was not previously able to use. It has come to my attention that there are some kernals out there that are better for battery life so my questions are:
1) If I want to flash a new kernal over my existing ROM can I just do that? Boot into recovery and flash the new kernal? (After a nandroid of course.) Or do I have to flash the ROM again, then flash the new kernal and then boot up? Do I need to wipe anything before flashing a new kernal?
2) What are the best kernals for battery life that work with the slcd screen?
Im having some problems with my desire.. my phone is presently in a htc white logo > reset > htc white screen logo > reset loop of doom... I can load up my hboot menu but that is about it.. If i try and select recovery in hboot it just resets the phone back into the htc white logo > reset > htc white screen logo loop.. somebody has suggested that unrevoked scewed up somewhere along the line and to install the RUU but windows isnt even recognising it as a USB drive in hboot...
I am tryibng to downgrade my Hboot from 0.93 to 0.8 and am following this guide:[HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT) - xda-developers The reason I amn doing this is because with Unrevoked I get a Validation Error Backup CID Is Missing or words to that effect.I understand that downgrading to an earflier Hboot version would make Unrevoked work and I can then root my htc desire. This is where I have a problem: Checking misc partition /data/local/mtd0.image: ok CID retrieved: H3__001 Modifying misc parition image Flashing misc partition... mtd: not writing bad block at 0x00000000 error writing misc: no space left on device Flash complete If any error ocurred here, press ctrl-c and run this utility again this I assume is talking about the little space i have ont he phone itself and not the sdcard as I have tried 2 sd cards. I did a factory reset, created the gold card and went throguh the process several times. If I let it go and carry on it goes through a few more things before it finally finishes. Then it reboots my htc desire and a white screen with skateboarding androids shows up, from there in the instructions it tells me to push up for flashing if i do that it goes to the nerxt option which is sim lock and I dont think that is what it is meant to be.If I boot into reocvery the phone freezes at a screen pic of the phone with a gtriangle and exclamation mark and so I take the battery out and reboot that way. Please can someone explain where am I going wrong here? Windows 7 x64 Android 2.1 Hboot 0.93
OMG my desire wont boot up right!it shows the white screen and htc but it just stays there and i cant get into the HBOOT to reboot i always have to remove the battery to kill it. any help?? plus the phones hot should i just fully let it charged while it is off?
Just about to root my girls branded Desire. When I did it before I had to debrand. From what I've just been reading is it just a case of using Unrevoked 3.21 now? No need to create goldcard etc? Been so long since I did mine it looks like its changed a bit.
So, I flashed .92 hboot from adrynalynes website and it is stuck in some kind of weird hboot boot loop. When I try to reboot it just goes black and comes back to this screen. I can get to clockwork and do and nandroid backup, but I just wanted to know what potentially caused this so I can avoid this in the future.
My phone got a fair bit of water in it and after drying out, it powers up to the HBOOT screen but vol up/down do not work nor does any other button. Curiously enough the phone seems to recognize if I insert the usb plug but my computer says failed to recognize device/load drivers.
This is what the screen says: INCREDIBLEC XC SHIP S-ON HBOOT-0.92.0000 MI CROP-0417 TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab RADIO-2.15.10.07.07 Jul 23 2010, 18:06:51

If you've upgraded to official froyo you probably know that downgrading can be difficult, especially if you have an SLCD screen. If you did a branded upgrade (e.g. Vodafone) then the old methods won't work at all.Since current rooting methods won't work on froyo this can be a big problem.I've created a tool that will downgrade Froyo to stock 2.1. It requires a goldcard if your phone is branded. The download details as well as instructions can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
I already had my Incredible replaced a few months ago, but now I am having trouble with the replacement, and I'm thinking about getting this one replaced with another certified replacement. However, I'd much rather have the SLCD screen because the text is much sharper since the screens use the typical RGB pixel layout as opposed to the RGBG PenTile layout of the AMOLED screens. This is the one reason I can't stand the AMOLED screen, you can read more about it here...
I just got a new Incredible with the sLCD display. Pretty nice phone, got it all rooted and flashed with unrevoked and noticed the clockwork recovery didn't give a display. So I whent ahead and flashed amonRA instead. Everythings working OK, but whenever I try and flash cyanogen or any roms similar I get stuck at the 1st boot screen (HTC Incredible) I have gotten a few roms to install but none of the ones I wanted to try unforunatly. Is this perhaps being due to the lack of support for the slcd screen? Does anyone have cyanogen installed on their SLCD Droid Incred?
I had a rom i loaded fine on my AMOLED Inc, but since i got a SLCD Inc (the amoled's screen cracked) i cant load this rom for the life of me...but sense ROMs work fine. And i rooted using unrevoked 3.21 , so i a SOFF, rooted, and using Adryn's cracked out clockwork.
Is there anyone that can give me step by step instructions on how to use hboot to install files from the root directory on my sd card. Ex.
This is what I did: I downloaded Clockworkmod 126.96.36.199, renamed the Clockworkmod zip to PB31IMG.zip, and placed it on the root of my SD card. Power-off, and boot into HBOOT (pressing the down vol+power button).
Then I downloaded Superuser 188.8.131.52 and place it on the SD card, use Clockworkmod Recovery and choose "Install .zip from SD" option.
Restarted my phone, and there's Superuser."
I have tried going through hboot and never see these files once I have installed them on the SD card.
I have read conflicting things, so I come to the experts. My phone is on hboot 0.77 - is this OK to install the OTA 2.2? I have read that 0.77 may send the phone into an endless boot loop if you install Froyo.
In my attempt to install the MUIU Rom I am having trouble upgrading my Hboot to .92. Ive downloaded it from various links provided, put it in the root of my sd, rebooted into hboot, waited, saw it check the PB31IMG.zip.....then nothing. It doesn't prompt me to do anything....
I got my eris 2 weeks ago so 2.1, and it has hboot 1.49 (can someone tell me wht that is/means?) was already on it. I've found out that the hboot is why I can't root. Has anyone came up w/ a workaround yet?
I only want to root to be able to use the Eris as a hot spot for my itouch, so if there is another way to do that.
