General :: Why Doesn't Google Sync Remember Joined Contacts
Jun 25, 2012
Seriously..this is my biggest gripe with Google. No matter how much time and effort I put into going through all my contacts and joining them and linking them to Facebook, it's all for naught because if I ever I have restore them from Google sync, they will all be unjoined and unorganized. Why doesn't Google remember which contacts I join with each other and which ones get linked with which Facebook profile?
I also back my contacts to my SD via Go Backup. That method remembers which contacts are joined but doesn't backup anything related to Facebook. And if I restore my contacts via that method, Google will still sync and I'll have like 3 of each contact.
I've checked my phone's sync settings, synced several times, logged in and out of Gmail online to see if anything has been updated. No such luck. Icon by phone numbers saved on phone is a cell phone, rather than the letter "G" which typically represents contacts pulled from Gmail online. I've had this issue - I believe - with my previous Samsung. Although I've seen this question brought up before, the answers are typically not device specific or have not been useful and clear to follow.
As a new user, I had difficulty negotiating this site and finding the best place to post this. There is not an LG Optimus L9 Forum so, if there is a location where this post might encourage more visibility.
I'm using the latest version of Google Maps on JB 4.2.2 [Nexus 4]..I noticed that I cannot edit the names of my locations in "My Places" in the phone app. So I used Google Bookmarks (google.com/bookmarks) from my PC to edit/rename My Places. However, the names do not sync or carry through to the Google Maps app on the phone. The names in the app are still the generic names, coordinates or street names.
Is there any way to change the names of My Places and get them to sync with the phone app? Really baffling!
What exactly does joining contacts do?I have joined all my duplicates and contacts from different lists together so there's only one entry per person. If I go on them, they're all listed under my Google Account under my email address. however some of them I merged on my phone aren't merged on gmail contacts.
And I see all the names now of my list, but the numbers aren't saved.. just their name, sometimes their email address..I'm currently on an old T-Mobile G2 but getting N4 soon..
I have a Vivid. Google contacts are set to sync. I also my outlook contacts using HTC sync (or MyPhoneExplorer). I used to have ~1300 contacts in Google. I now have 16. Everytime I restore my contacts, they are soon gone. I made a google contact yesterday and it is now gone. The destruction seems to happen when I sync with outlook.
I have the phone running Android 2.3.4 (rooted).I have two Google accounts setup on my phone. I use both of them as there are apps purchased from both accounts.
I would like to sync contacts from my phone to BOTH the accounts. As of now, contacts are being synced to just one Google Account. In the "Accounts and Sync", I see both the Google Accounts listed, with the "Sync Contacts" option enabled for both accounts.
Is it possible to sync contacts to both GOOGLE accounts from the phone? If yes, how?
Everything works very well. I haven't noticed any hangups at all, with the exception of 1. my google latitude contacts don't sync. they appear on my desktop but dont appear on my phone with latitude installed.
Actually turned out simpler to do than i initially thought it would be.
Enables "Keep Locally" ( keep_local ) option for adding new contacts instead of forced google account.
Prevents google from deleting all you contacts when you remove your account
Disables google contact sync
The offending package comes with gapps if you got google that way.
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk you will find it in /system/app/ (need root file explorer to see it though)
You can make this fix in 3 ways, the first may not need root but i cant test as my phone is rooted. In Settings>App find it in the list of all installed apps, click it, click disable. (can do this without root)Use a root file explorer such as "Root Browser", navigate to /system/app/ backup the app .apk to your sdcard for example, then delete it.You can also try clicking the app .apk in "Root Browser" and choose uninstall, but i could get this to work.
Thats it ! , no need to reboot. (to test it worked, just navigate to Settings>Accounts>(your google account) and you will see there is no longer the option to sync contacts)
Is this just the nature of Android, that contacts have to be sync'ed back to some Internet server? Or even that you must have an email address to even use the damn thing?
I have a Motorola Backflip. Android seems cool because of the customization capabilities, but I don't know where my data is. Is there any Android phone that keeps contacts local & doesn't "phone home"?
Of the 2GB dataplan that AT&T automatically added once I plugged my SIM card in, I've only racked up 50MB of data for the whole billing period (which ends in a couple days). I like Android but don't need 3G or Internet.
i am using HTC desire(Android) and i am pretty much happy with the performance. The issue i wanna discuss here is that my phone does not sync the birthdays from my phone contact details to the calender, as it was availabe in my previous phone HTC Touch diamond, i used to feed the birthday details along with the contact and it syncs those birthdays with the calender when i used to sync it manually with the help of computer. But no such option is availabe in Android. please don't reply with the 'synching birthday contact and events' from google calender. I've seen loads of forums on that , but that ain't related to my problem. i want synchronization of my phone contact's birthday details to the phone calender.
On my Droid there was a setting to only sync Facebook data for contacts who also were Google contacts. On the X, there doesn't seem to be that option anymore. I don't want all of my Facebook "friends" to show up in my contact list on my phone but I would like Facebook data to sync for my actual contacts in my Google contact list. Has anyone figured this out?
My calendar syncs in only one direction: in other words if I enter an event on my PC in google calendar, it shows up on my phone...but if I enter the event on the phone first, it doesn't sync to my google calendar online..is that normal?
It did, now it doesn't! Anyone else had this problem? I haven't changed any settings. When I check my Google Calender on a PC, it had various new entries. However, sync icon on the phone stays on the menu bar for ages, but phone Calender doesn't update.
I added the birthday to a contact the other day but it didn't appear in my calendar on the phone, even though I have the Google 'Contacts' birthdays and events' enabled and it has worked fine in the past.
To cut a long story short when I add a birthday a new entry is created in the Google calendar but it doesn't appear on the phone even after multiple syncs. The only way to get it to appear (or to get the test ones I tried, to disappear) was to remove the calendar from the phone and then add it again (Calendars>Menu>Remove----Menu>Add).
I set up my Google account on my phone but my contacts do not appear in the "People" app. One solution I read was to check if the contacts were stored on the phone itself and not the Google account, however I checked and they are in fact stored under the "Google" option (People > View) When I click on the sub-option under Google ("Show auto Gmail contacts") then it shows *every* contact I've ever emailed in the "All" list, but it still doesn't show my groups that I've set up in the "My Contacts" list. So, how do I do this? All I want is for "My Contacts" to sync with my phone, not everything else.
Anyway I want to upgrade to a different ROM, and I hate entering my contacts every time. How can I sync them to google? I am upgrading from Cyanogen 4.0.4 to Hero ROM *Edit* Figured it out. Go to settings -> Data Synchronization, and select contacts. I have seen many topics like this so maybe we should sticky this?
I get a sync error when I try to sync my google contacts. Everyone google sync works (ie. picassa, calender, email). I've searched pretty extensively without any real solution or even explanation of the problem. anyone experience this, and know how they solved it?
On a stock Android system, it is possible to disable sync for Google Contacts, Calendar, etc. Under Sense UI on the Incredible, there is no way to uncheck "contacts" under "Accounts & Sync" that I find. I have disabled the entire Background Sync, but of course that disables the Market. Is there a way to disable Google contacts sync that anyone has found?
In our company we are using Google Apps and I have a none branded Magic (delivered by 3 in Denmark) with Android 1.5 and a ROM with build number 2.16.401.5.In the phone's Calendar app I can create entries that will sync perfectly with any of my online Google Calendars but I can't create a new contact that will sync to my Gmail Contacts. On the phone there is only one Contact source (Phone) available.
For some reason, only half of my 200 and something contacts would sync to google contacts, despite them all being Google contacts. I tried forcing sync and everything, no go.I am looking for a program that will only backup my contacts , dont need anything else. This is because im thinking of a factory wipe & installing custom roms, so a android backup wont do any good for me.Is there anything free available?
For the last couple of days my Eris hasn't been syncing with Google Contacts. No settings have been changed. It just keeps trying to sync. The other day it drained my battery while at work. I have had to stop it manually or it will just keep trying to sync. When I try to manually sync it through Setting it still says it's 'currently experiencing problems'.
I have a nokia 5800 now, and my htc Incredible is on order. I am trying to get my calendar and contacts synced to google (thats a whole other deal). My question is that I have 400+ contacts in my cell now, I have a separate 180 in my gmail account. Can I pic and choose who gets synced to my phone? I don't need every person I ever e-mailed in my cell contacts.
I see it does it automatically for some people. I think if their name matches exactly or possible their email in Google Contacts is the same as Facebook. But how do I sync them if I changed their display name or have no email for them?
