Android :: Api To External Usb Devices For Robotic Applications

Nov 18, 2010

Android devices become incredible cheap (especially those with android v1.6). I'm considering to use one as a brain of autonomous robot. Unfortunately I didn't find any info on that.

I would like to connect two external USB-webcams and some DIY-selfmade USB ADC & output-ports converter to steer the wheels and read analog distance sensors. If I choose some cheap netbook than they usually already have 3 usb ports. But if I will be forced to use a tablet, then it requires also an usb hub.

Do android devices support usb-hubs?
Is there any API to grab still frames from external usb webcams (e.g. "vfa://0" & "vfa://1")
Is there any API to read from USB custom device? Let assume that it will simulate serial port for simplicity.
Do I get all of this in android 1.6 or any newer version?

As an update for your information: Based on answers I assume that android device will be too expensive in comparison to effort. I will go for cheap atom netbook with standard linux & arduinio USB device for controls & sensors. At cost of half kg (one pound) heavier device I will save months on learning & development.

Android :: Linking To Applications From External Browser

Aug 24, 2010

I'm quite new to Android so please excuse if this is the wrong forum, but I have searched up and down and also this list, but is there no way to externally link from my website into the market to show my app within a desktop browser and not on the device? I mean similar to the iTunes links where you can view the application details right in any browser.

Android :: Checking Speed Of Applications Without Physical Devices?

Feb 23, 2010

I'm writing a game for Android. I'd like to target as many devices as possible. I'm aware that Droid owners buy about 50% of the apps and the rest are a mixture of G1 and HTC devices. So far, I've been testing my app in the emulator set to model the Droid phone (where I get about 40 fps) as well as on an actual Droid phone (where I get about 60 fps).

I'd like to know how fast my app runs on slower devices such as the G1. Is there any way I can do this besides getting a G1 myself or asking people with G1s to test it for me? For example, is there any way I can use the emulator to get a rough idea how well it will run on the G1?

Android :: Launching External Application From App

Dec 29, 2009

I would like to launch an app the user selects from within my application. However, I'm not sure how I'd go about doing this. I've tried this:

Intent intent = new Intent();
intent.setAction(Contacts.Intents.SHOW_OR_CREATE_CONTACT);
startActivity(intent);

But this seems to throw an error and force close my application. I also tried adding:

<action android:name="Contacts.Intents.SHOW_OR_CREATE_CONTACT"/>

in the AndroidManifest file, but to no avail.

A look at Logcat shows that it's an "IOexception - no such file or directory". A couple of questions arise from this. I read through the Android docs and noticed that the Contact.Intents class is deprecated. However, it's successor, ContactContracts is aimed at API level 5 whereas I'm targeting API level 3. Could this be the problem? Also, I've hardcoded this application into the code. Is there a way to retrieve the intents of any application the user selects so that they can be launched?

Android :: External Bluetooth Polling

Nov 9, 2010

I'm trying to pulse my bluetooth dongle, to see if it is range. Every second my Android sends a char to the dongle, which then responds with a char. If there is no response, or the char is wrong, then it should conclude that there is no connection. I'm able to send from Android to dongle (attached to MCU), and the dongle is able to respond. All I need is a simple way to read each char (when received) to compare it. I'm trying to do it in a seperate thread to make it run in its own loop.

Here is my code so far, but I think I might be off, so if you could give me a pointer!

void readFromInputStream()
{
Thread readFromInputStream = new Thread()
{
public void run()...............................

Android :: How Can I Use External Jar In Project In NetBeans?

Jan 13, 2010

I need to create an Android library which I can include as a jar in any Android application. I use NetBeans 6.8, the nbandroid plugin, and the Android SDK.The steps I took so far are:

1) Create the library project, with android.jar included to have access to Android classes (the library uses android.util.Log and other Android classes).

2) Compile the library as a jar.

3) Add the library's jar to the Android application (right-click on Libraries under the project node and add the jar).

4) Add <uses-library> to the Android manifest. (erroneous and unnecessary)

Step 3 at least allows me to reference the library's classes in the application's source code, but the classes don't seem to actually be included at compile time.Do I have to add the library to the build path somewhere else? Am I missing something?
