Android :: Server Socket Programming In 1.5 / Most Power Efficient Way?

Dec 2, 2009

I am doing a project where I have too develop an application that listens for incoming events by a service. The device that has to listen too events is an Android phone with Android SDK 1.5 on it. Currently the services that call events only implement communication trough UDP or TCP sockets. I can solve my problem by setting up a ServerSocket, but i doubt that's the most power efficient way. This application will be running most of the time, with Wi-Fi on, and I'd like too reach an long battery duration. I've been looking for options on the internet for my question for a while but i couldn't get a real answer. What is the most efficient way too listen to incoming events? Should I make an ServerSocket? or what are my options? Are there any other implementations that are more power efficient?

Android :: Google Voice Call Quality -- How A Call Routed If Have GV Make The Call

Feb 11, 2010

I use Google Voice (love it) primarily because of it's visual voicemail on my Droid. I do have a Google Voice number, and I'm trying to decide whether to set the Droid app to "make calls using Google Voice" or not.

I have no problem with giving out a different number, and my placed calls seeing the GV number in caller ID.

My question is, does this affect how the call is actually connected, from a quality standpoint? I tired a call both ways, and the sound quality seemed a little bit different. But then, I am an obsessive compulsive weirdo.

Is there any difference in call quality or routing between making a native Verizon call and a Google Voice call on Droid? (Like, does Google voice actual use 3G to connect to Google server over the internetz, then place the phone call?)

Android :: Can I Get A Google Dev Phone To Make Droid Apps

May 31, 2010

I am thinking about converting my web apps into Android apps to reach the Android market. I do not have an Android phone. Can someone tell me how I can possibly get a Google developer phone (other than going to Google I/O, etc)?
I realize this is somewhat of a ridiculous request but I have read blogs of people being enticed by google and offered a free phone to convert their web apps into Android apps. So I figure there is no harm in asking.

I am also wondering what the cost of the developer phone is once you pay your $25 to enter the android market place as a developer through the developer account.

Also if in any way Android code is similar, then will it be hard to bring the iPhone (Xcode) files, or copy and paste my iPhone code into the Android code.

As the title says i'm new to the Android community, and i don't have much experience on the development side either. but i am very interested in getting started. I see that Android apps are based off of Java... So would it be better for me to learn Java before getting started with the SDK and eclipse? Or is it just the same to jump right in on App development and learn on the fly?

Where do I have to make a modification? In the kernel, in the Android platform, or is this hidden in some proprietary code of the manufacturer?

Android :: Microphone Audio Capture With Emulator Is Of Very Poor Quality / Make It High?

Jun 2, 2009

As a first step toward a speech recognition project, we wrote a simple voice recording application based on the information in this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...

It is working; however, the audio is extremely poor -- too staticy for our needs code...

As a comparison, here is a similar audio file captured with audacity on a PC: http://juzzam.org:9090/myAudioFile_onPC.mp3

Has anyone been able to record high quality audio with the emulator? If not, is it any better on the android dev phone?

According to the documentation of MediaRecorder, there is only one audio encoder "AMR (Narrowband) audio codec" and three output formats--3gpp, mpeg, and raw AMR: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/MediaRecorder.html

Here is the Activity source: http://juzzam.org:9090/RecordMicrophone.java.txt

We are testing on Windows XP, with a Logitec USB microphone, eclipse ganymede, and we are using all the defaults for an android 1.5 app (no emulator command-line options.. we defined the sdcard in the avd manager).

HTC EVO 4G :: Voicemail Sound Quality Absolutely Atrocious / Make It Better?

Am I the only one with this problem?

When I listen to my voicemails (using the stock voicemail app) the sound quality is absolutely atrocious. I have to turn the volume all the way up and it is still very hard to hear and the overall quality is extremely bad.

I just find this so odd since the call quality during normal calls is perfectly fine.

Using Android, is it possible to automatically make your phone initiate a screen gesture (like a swipe across the screen) whenever you hit the power button, then proceed to turn off the phone? I know it's a very weird question, but I have my reasons.

I imagine it's possible with some type of app like Tasker, but I don't know if Tasker can initiate screen movements that imitate a finger moving across the screen in a point and direction of your choice.

HTC Legend :: Quality Of Apps

May 24, 2010

I have had the legend now for quite a few weeks since it was launched and my initial excitement with the phone lead me to install a lot of interesting apps from the market, after a couple of weeks usage I was pleased with the Legend apart from battery life not getting much more than 12 hours usage which lead me to use the device along with a small nokia incase the battery died on the HTC. I was having trouble with facebook and exchange contact information not syncing so I did a complete factory reset which cured the syncing but I have also not reinstalled many apps because I haven't had the time. My point is I am now getting nearly 48 hrs from a charge without any battery apps like JuiceDefender or similar which leads me to think the terrible battery life was down to one or more apps using up the power while idle, I am now wary of installing any apps and would like some sort of rating on these apps that show how efficient or not theses apps are. If I do install an app I might wait at least two weeks before installing another to test its battery friendliness.

HTC Incredible :: Google Voice Quality Not So Good

Jun 11, 2010

Has anyone else noticed that calls placed using Google Voice don't sound as good as a regular cell call? I hung up from a friend and called right back using Google Voice, and it was more difficult to understand. I was using my bluetooth speakerphone, and their voice kept fading in and out. So I hung up again and called back via the handset, and experienced the same problem. I did this last week and also had this problem, but thought it may just be a temporary glitch. Apparently I also sounded fuzzy to them. Shouldn't be too much different from a normal call should it? It's just basically calling a Google number, and then Google is calling to the actual number you want to call.

Motorola :: Will Droid Ever Get Any High Quality Gaming Apps?

Dec 27, 2009

Emulators are fun and all but, I have just been playing Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. on my iPod Touch and nothing in the android market can touch it. The difference in graphics and game play between the Apple App Store and the Android market is huge. Is it a limitation of other android devices? From what Ive read the Droid has the same (or similar) processor as the iPhone 3GS. I am playing games on the 2nd Gen iPod Touch which has a slower processor and it performs flawlessly. I am not an apple fan boy and have never owned a iPhone. I love my Droid and want to be able to hand my touch to my wife and forget about it. Will the Droid ever get any high quality gaming apps?

That said, I'm still very happy with my Droid AND a little bit jealous of the N1 already, all at the same time. I may even buy it at some point in the coming months, but most of all, this is exciting news for the platform we all know rocks

Samsung Moment : Power On Phone And All Of My Apps Will Be Their In The List

Feb 19, 2010

Is it true that using a Task killer, actually opens your apps. I have noticed I will power on my phone and all of my apps will be their in the list. Also I have heard that that means they are ready to use but not neccesarily on. However, I kill all the tasks and still some will open a minute or two later, when I didnt open them. Its starting to bug me. I have Bettercut, with a few programs with different icons, and have beautiful widgets on one of the screen, with the silent, vibrate, and airplone widget. Swiping screens is really slow and laggy, I am not rooted or anything. I have the c14 update, is their any helpful way to fix this.

Also I will only have 30 Mbs open after 5 minutes of restarting the phone.
And don't say whats the big deal, if its working. Having more memory available makes apps runs smoother and faster.
