Mods. IMHO we have a lot of new users that are rooting their phone just for the sake of saying that they have rooted their phone. We have seen this before with other phones, not unlike the iphone, but the reasoning behind JBreaking an iphone, in hindsight, is crystal clear. We were trying to get more performance out of the platform vs the crap the apple and itunes were offering. Most of us have lived and learned through that process and want to put it into practical application here with the evo hyc 4g platform as well. That being said its obvious that this is the main driver behind rooting the evo as well. It may best serve the interest of our/your users, new and old, to detail out the pros and cons of rooting the evo. If this already articulated somewhere in the forum I would say, i stand corrected and pardon me. If not lets ask one of our senior posters/mods to offer that advice up and sticky the post appropriately.View 6 Replies View Related

Not that the above sticky is not useful and interesting. For those who have not read it, there is a debate raging about the effect of a specific OC setup on battery life.Regardless of that, has anybody else tried to overclock the processor for speed, or underclock it for battery? I am curious about a few things:
1. If you overclock the process for speed, which applications benefit? So far, there is very little lag anyway - without overclocking.
2. Is it not necessary to up the voltage going to the Evo processor when overclocking? For example, when I overclocked my home pc, I changed the voltage and the RAM timing.
3. When underclocking, if the same "stock" voltage is going to the processor anyway how does anybody expect to get battery savings? In my mind, the speed of the processor is not the issue, it is the energy that the processor consumes. (Or is this automatically handled by the widget behind the scenes?)
4. When underclocking the processor - have you experienced more lag? What is the "slowest" the processor can run before you notice anything?
5. What general experiences have you had with applications, the process, etc.
Im on 3 and as of yet there is no update to 2.1 so im on 1.5 ..now this maybe the most stupid question ever but in the sticky slug posted it says coustom ROM'S and all of them are 2.1 does that mean i have to have 2.1 update to be able to use one of these ROM'S, if not what are your recommendations for a custom ROM ie what one from the list is best and why . what will they do/ what do they do , will it improve this already good phone and in which ways , also if i am able to put one onto the phone how do i do it.View 10 Replies View Related

I have an app which performs some online functions to a web server farm we operate using URLConnection. I'm finding that the client IP address of the phone seems to change after a fairly brief period of inactivity.
For example, please see these timestamps and the corresponding client IP addresses:

This is sitting in a stationary location (on an AT&T EDGE network) in my office. Is there some reason for this behavior?
I have an app that performs an asynchronous login as part of its startup sequence. This eventually displays a list of items.
A separate thread performs integrity checks on a database on the sdcard during the startup sequence. If something is unexpected, I do a sendBroadcast() that triggers a showDialog() on my base activity class. This asks the user on how to react to the unexpected event.
My problem is: this dialog disappears as soon as the startup sequence finishes and displays the list of items. Is it possible to make my dialog stay on top no matter what?
My Galaxy S came with a little piece of sticky plastic, with a cut-out hole for the lens itself, that covered the camera bezel.I assume this was just to prevent the silver bit getting scratched in transit, and not for anything important like keeping dust out of the housing, etc?I only ask because I assumed it was intended to be removed, but it was quite tricky to get off. So when I finally did get it off, I suddenly wondered if I should have done.View 7 Replies View Related

My keyboard on my droid is like becoming less sticky. Like it seems like the adhesive underneath the buttons isn't working so the buttons make a noise every time I push them. I was wondering if this happened to anyone else or if my phone is just messed up because I wasn't sure if its even worth it to get a new one or if it'll just happen again.View 9 Replies View Related
Can you make a sticky thread please on this subject and include a step by step guide and maybe the link to SE's blog and video on how to... So many users are really struggling with this, and its all possible as long as you get the set up right. People don't seem to see your yellow asterisk and it also doesn't give a huge amount of info. Coming from dumb phones where you just pressed the button this whole new way of doing things is a bit perplexing when you start out.View 1 Replies View Related

Been talking to Lekky and we have all these great things grouped into one thread. One important thread is side mounting the captivate. Things it gives you are SDK which can be downloaded for PC or Mac. Drivers again PC or Mac.
Then Root access no biggie
Busy box no biggie.
Then it goes into the CMD language for PC on how to edit the database file using CMD prompts to enable the sideloading of APKs directly on the phone.......................

My wife has a Captivate and I have a Vibrant. She does all the bills and uses mooLa! to keep a running tab on our acct balances since our bank's site is REALLY unreliable. We are looking for an app that is exactly like moola, but syncs between or phones so if I spend money, it will show up in her app and if she spends money, it will show up in mine. Any type of solution would work if we had a way to sync moola, that would be awesome if there's another app like it that syncs, that would work too get creative!View 2 Replies View Related

I have been a Windows mobile user for over 10 years, and am slowly converting over to Android.I say slowly because what I'm doing right now is running a version of Android on my HTC Touch Pro2, off the storage card.I intend on switching over to a full-blown device soon, but right now, this method is allowing me to explore the OS and learn about Android before switching over. One of my biggest concerns is the transition from apps that I have used for years, and rely on every day.For example, I've seen several wallet apps in the Android Market, but I've not found one yet that appears to have a version for the device as well as the PC Desktop.I use Spb Wallet daily, and have hundreds of things stored in there. Half of the time, I'm using it via my device, and the other half of the time, I am using it while sitting at my PC at home. Are there some apps available that offer Desktop-to-device synchronization?View 2 Replies View Related

I'm looking for a note-app that has a widget, and syncs with something that includes me beeing able to read (and add) on my computer(s). I've tried evernote, but that doesn't seem to have a widget so I have to enter the app every time (cumbersome). What about any google wave apps? Those (well, one) I see on the marked (I only has access to the free part) is low ranked with crash warnings. or Google Notebook (or docs for that matter)? - just trust google more than your everyday website I don't know if exists tomorrow or sell my content for highest bidder (not that I'll store something of value anyway, still)View 9 Replies View Related

I'm considering getting a new mobile device, and this will definitely influence my decision about whether to go Android or Windows 7 (mobile).
I really like onenote because I can handwrite my notes- and so i remember them better than when I type them. I can also select my text with the lasso (or even individual strokes with a click!) and move it around, in case I don't leave enough room or something.
Anyway, I'm looking for an app for android that lets me take advantage of a stylus and take notes in multiple colors, and be able to select and move/resize my text. I'd LIKE (but could do without) to be able to sync to my desktop and add pictures or text or whatever- basically what i can do with onenote. However, I haven't found a comprehensive application for android, and I may go with the windows device, just so that I can use onenote (but the performance scares me a bit- android is really snappy!). I wouldn't mind paying for the app. <$100-150
I already checked out the web apps version of onenote, but it doesn't do handwriting.
Anyone know if an app like this exists, or is in development?
Heres a real easy way to jot down your notes while on the go. Create a new note and set yourself a reminder or search through your current notes.
New notes can be added at the top of the main screen or use your phones menu to Add a new note, Search previous notes, add a labels and establish your settings.
In Settings you can change things like the color of the notepad, font, font size, set up reminders, export and import notes to/from your SD card and more.
AK Notepad makes it easy to jot down quick thoughts, write a blog post, set-up grocery list and anything else you need to to remember.
Do you have this app? Prefer using another Android app for note taking? Let other know by leaving a comment below.

You can download this app direct to your android phone. Just scan the QR code below with Barcode Scanner application from Android Market: GigaDroid.com

I have this triplication problem;
1. I have a Google Apps account with my contacts/calendar etc
2. I have my work exchange account
3. I have Outlook 2007 standalone on my home laptop to access gmail etc
I have always used WM devices in the past and kept the work exchange and home outlook in sync using the device.
So when I got this, I synced outlook and exchange, got a copy of the PST and uploaded it into my google account.
Set up google and exchange, and installed htc sync on the laptop and synced phone, now I have 3 sets of addresses and 2 sets of calenders with the same thing. How best to sort this!
If I am at work I would add things etc to my exchange, and at home to outlook stand alone, is there an app that syncs the 3 together!
I run a network of about 30 users and we have about 12 different android phones and one of our Droid Incredible users is having the problem that when he adds a calendar appointment on his phone. It will sync to outlook but it won't sync to his phone if he adds the appointment inside of outlook.View 1 Replies View Related
Simple question - any android app that syncs with outlook tasks?
this is important for me, as much as gmail, calender and contact sync exists - tasks are ALSO VERY IMPORTANT?
I am interested in finding a contacts app replacement that syncs with Google Contacts. I like the stock contacts app that comes with the EVO except in one regard. I MUST have larger fonts for my old eyes. I really need an app that has an option for text size customization.View 4 Replies View Related

I am looking for an "Outlook like" note and task manager that syncs between my Eris and my PC. This seems like a much needed app and apparently it exists just not for the Droid, because I used it with my Blackberry.I just want something easy and simple that I can make my grocery list either on my Eris itself or on my desktop and have it sync up. I hate having to enter everything directly on the phone and would like to see the same notes/tasks on my PC and this also enables me to print them as well. Outlook synced up with my Blackberry and it was just a simple effort to see all my notes right there on Outlook and also on my BB. It seems like everyone is looking for this, so why hasn't it been done? Why does Eris sync up with my Outlook calendar and contacts but not my notes and tasks? Google docs seems just like the name says - docs. I just want notes to be synced to my pc. I currently using Color Notes and Easy Notes to keep stuff on my phone but, again, want it to sync with PC.View 3 Replies View Related
There are many note taking apps but I am looking for one that e-mails me the note to my own gmail account as soon as the note is created.
Some note taking apps have this feature. For example, AK Notepad has a "share" button that allows you to open up gmail and e-mail the contents of the note to anyone. This is pretty much what I want but the problem with AK Notepad is that to send myself the note I need to do the following:
1. Create the note
2. Select menu
3. Select "Share"
4. Scroll to "gmail"
5. Gmail pops open - enter in contact information (in my case it would be firstname.lastname@example.org)
6. Send e-mail.
I want an app that essentially skips steps 2-6. I want it so that AS SOON as a note is written it is automatically sent to my gmail as an email.
This is not meant to be specifically about particular apps for Android, but the state of note-taking & Android in general (though I suppose I do hope to get some guidance in finding just the right app), so if a Mod feels this should be in the Apps forum instead, I understand.
There are lots of note-taking apps in the Market, and I imagine we are all familiar with the most popular (NoteEverything, Ak Notepad, Springpad, Evernote, 3banana/Catch) and a search for "note" on AppBrain finds almost 3000 results.
I myself have been looking for the "holy grail" of note taking & syncing between Android and my PC, and unless I've missed something we seem to not yet have one best note "ecosystem" for Android.
To be clear, this is what I personally consider the perfect note ecosystem. Others may disagree.
1. Create and Edit text notes on the Android device. (capturing photo notes, QR codes, and voice notes are not necessary, but certainly awesome-sauce on top).
2. Arrange notes in separate "notebooks" (or folders) within the app.
3. Easily sync the notes to my PC so that they remain in their separate notebooks (folders), and so that I can edit them easily on my PC either in a different program, or a program specific to the Android app. This syncing does not need to have a step in the "cloud" (I prefer keeping things on my PC anyway) but it wouldn't hurt.
So far on my phone I've been using NoteEverything and Catch (formerly 3Banana).
NoteEverything (NE) lets me organize my notes in folders and sub-folders (notebooks) but does not sync to the cloud or a PC. NE does let you import and export, but when you export it does not export the notes in their folders, but rather one entire batch of .txt files. Then you have to copy those files to your PC (I have been using my USB cable, and MS SyncToy). I have considered using the DropBox app to keep NE notes synced to my PC, but it still requires me to export and import manually. Not the same as syncing. (For the record, I am using the FREE version of NE).
Catch/3Banana lets me sync my notes, but only to the web/cloud. There is no desktop client from Catch to sync to my PC. I want to be able to access those notes when offline (with my laptop). Also, Catch does not use folders/notebooks, but # hash tags instead (which i don't care for. Not the way my brain organizes).
The official Evernote app in the Market does NOT allow offline access to notes, and there is a whole snafu where notes created using Rich text (or other formatting) elsewhere and then synced to EN can only be appended not edited. EN does have notebooks however, and i can sync it to my desktop EN client. EN does have a new Beta that was just released through their web site that allows offline notes, but I haven't tried it yet, and it has its own problems so far (as it's still in Beta).
Springpad is more like Catch, you can sync it online, but has no desktop PC client for offline use.
GDocs is an app that will let you open and edit your Google Docs files, but when I used it it seemed kind of buggy and hard to use well.
Docs 2 Go is great if you want to pay for it (i have) but again the problem is syncing with the desktop. I suppose this could be done with DropBox. Not sure how well this satisfies my requirement of notebooks/folders, nor how "slick" an implementation this would be.
Those are the only note apps I've tried so far, so it's entirely likely I've missed one that will do what I want, but the trick seems to be getting it on to the PC.
Evernote would be the best option so far if it had offline notes on the phone. Perhaps when the new version is out of Beta that will be the best bet, however when it comes to a desktop client, while I do use EN at work (and a portable version on my USB stick) on my PC I use (and swear by, not at) MS OneNote.
MS OneNote is amazing. I wish the Evernote desktop client had the options and tools of OneNote, but it doesn't. OneNote, can sync (or import/export) with the new online version of OneNote, but there is currently no Android app for OneNote.
So there's the whole thing, and now I'd like to know what others think of the Android/PC Note-taking ecosystem. Is a unified system with all the bells and whistles possible? Does it already exist and I've missed it?
What are your methods for keeping notes synced not just with the cloud, but to your PC?
I just factory reset due to all the problems i was having on 2.2. When it started up, I got a welcome to droid screen, about how to use my droid and set it up. When I got my phone the first time I never got any of this?View 11 Replies View Related
