Coming from a Blackberry Storm, I had Slacker Radio and it was one of the first apps I downloaded on my new Eris yesterday. However, I am finding that the ability to cache radio stations to your media card is missing from the features of the Android app. The cache was extremely useful as it wouldn't force the data connection and thus helped to conserve battery life.
Is there an alternative app for radio that will cache stations or do I need to hit up the Slacker team to get an update to the Android App?
I just got my Droid but I frequently use Pandora and Last.FM on my computer at work. Last.FM - Seems like the service has a better list of artists than Pandora so i switched to it on my PC recently. On Android the service is the same but as an app it tends to be open in the background all the time and suffers from not being able to pause (like the PC version). The scrobbling could be nice for some users and it links to the android player. Sound Quality seems excellent, best of the three so far. Pandora - Haven't gotten to use it too much because it takes so long to load my station. Sound Quality seemed fine with my limited use.
Slacker Radio - Has the most music options of the three and seems likes the best application. It has plenty of options like keeping the screen from freezing while plugged in and on wifi without having to change your phone settings. Had to stop listening from poor sound quality though! Sound Quality started ok but a bassy boom and click started appearing after a few songs, forced to switch to Last.FM.
I've been using Slacker Radio (version 2.0.84) quite happily for the past couple months on the Moto Droid (OS version 2.1).
Over the last month, I've had at least 4 times when the radio starts blasting while the phone is in the charger in the middle of the night. The last two times, it seems to have happened at 3:25 or 3:26 am. The other times it went crazy it may have been the same time.
Has anyone else experienced this and perhaps has a fix?
I just downloaded Slacker 1.0.375 (I think) and have found a huge sound quality issue...
I'm currently using Shure SE310 earbuds on multiple devices and have noticed no issues with their quality... I also use Pandora (on my droid) with no quality issues... So I know it is neither the earbuds or the 3.5mm headphone jack on my droid...
What I notice with Slacker is that the bass, probably 50%-75% of the time, comes through with a lot of distortion / crackling... It is apparent at all volume levels that the music is actually audible and varies across all music genres...
I know other Hero users are having the same problem, and so far Slacker support has not fixed. One the screen sleeps it will finish the current song but not play a next song until you unlock the screen. I even have an app that keeps the screen from locking but allows it to go black and that causes the same issue. Anyone have a suggestion? This makes it where I can only use Slacker with the screen on which make the app almost worthless.
In the short time that I've used Slacker radio, my phone has rebooted itself twice. At the time I was on Wifi and was skipping a lot of songs. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this a software or hardware issue?
Pandora on my phone sucks. It skips and clicks and jams up all the time. I've even force closed, then un-installed, then re-installed it, and I still have the same problems. My brother has a Droid and he says he uses Slacker all the time on his phone so I decided to try it.. It works PERFECTLY! No more skips and horrible noises while I try to listen to the radio on my phone and it works in the same concept as Pandora.
I just wanted to share this with anyone that has the same issues that I have with Pandora and really would like to be able to listen to the radio on their Moment. BTW, i thought that it would use a lot of battery, but it really doesn't seem to. I also got a little cable on ebay that has two male ends like a headphone jack. I plug one end into the headphone hole on my phone and the other end into the "aux" hole in my truck, and it works GREAT through my truck's stereo system.
In cm roms, dalvik cache of system apps are generated in /cache but those data/apps are generated in /data. Is there any way to disable this behaviour? Cache partition in our phones is too small. In AOSP and AOKP and stock roms, dalvik cache is always generated in /data no matter whether its a system app. any way to achieve this in cm roms?
I love slacker on my wife's blackberry but it keeps freezing up on my moment. does anyone else have that problem? if so and no fix I hope 2.0 will fix it. Also has anyone heard when 2.0 will come out for android?
I'm implementing an image cache system for caching downloaded image.
My strategy is based upon two-level cache: Memory-level and disk-level.
My class is very similar to the class used in the droidfu project
My downloaded images are put into an hashmap and the Bitmap objet is wrapped inside a SoftRererence object.
Also every image is saved permanently to the disk. If a requested image is not found into the Hashmap<String,SoftReference<Bitmap>> it will be searched on the disk, readed, and then pushed back into the hashmap. Otherwise the image will be downloaded from the network.
Since I store the images into the phisical device momery, I have added a check for preserve the device space and stay under a 1M of occupied space:
This method is called sometime afte a disk writing:
What I'd like to add is the same check on the HashMap size to prevent it will grow too much. Something like this:
My question is: What could be a right MAX_MEMORY_SIZE value? Also, Is it a good approach? A good answer also could be: "Don't do it! SoftReference is already enough"
ok so I do know that due to the amazing OTA from sprint and HTC, that our streaming services such as pandora and slacker pretty much sucks when it comes to listening to it. I have however noticed that when using both slacker and pandora it seems to take quite a bit longer. Usually it loads the whole song in a matter of seconds but now it pretty much streams it live and if you loose sig within a whole second or two it stops. Thus resulting in using more battery. Is this because of the format change or something like that?
So I used to be able to have google navigation running, pandora or slacker in the background playing music, and even take a call or two all at the same time.
When navigation spoke some directions, the music would halt just for the time being then play right away once directions were done.
NOW, however, I'm guessing due to the froyo update - if I have pandora playing and navigation running, directions comign up halts the music as before, but instead of resumign automatically, I have to manually go back into pandora and hit play again. Even worse, in slacker, it will pause the music, but when it "resumes" it does so by skipping to the next song!
Has anyone experienced this change or does anyone know what I can do to get things back to normal (except remove froyo if even possible). I like the other changes froyo brought other than this one.
This doesn't always happen but when it does, Slacker stops playing after every 2 or so songs. I get a message box that reads "Warning! Unable to find active data or WiFi connection. Would you like to quit the application?" and gives me Yes or No options. Clicking No returns me to the Stations list where selecting any station returns me to the one previously playing and starts the next song when I hit Play.
I currently have code that creates rows in a table that hold a string in column 1 with a RadioButton in column 2. There can be a variable number of these rows. That all works just great, but I want to add them to a RadioGroup so only one button can be toggled at a time. When I tried to add the dynamic RadioButton to the RadioGroup AFTER I added it to the table row, I got an error saying that the child (the RadioButton) already had a parent. I agree, it does have one, the TableRow.
can you have radio buttons tied to a radio group inside of a row or, should I just code my own toggle mechanism and avoid RadioGroup all together? I mean, I could code the onClick to unclick all other radio buttons, but I would rather not do this if I can use the build in RadioGroup.
But unfortunately the radio buttons inside the table seem to ignore the fact that they're inside of the RadioGroup tags and because of this you can select more than one radio button at the time. I noticed that by removing the table and just having the radio buttons it works just fine. How can I overcome this? Would it be as simple as declaring the radio group inside of the table instead of outside?
I turned on my Droid this morning to listen to MSNBC and I heard the last 5 minutes of Keith Obermann (5:55 am est) and then all of my news and talk channels disappeared! Channels like CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC and NPR are all gone from my favorites and the channel line-up. There is nothing in the "News and Public Radio" category. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm thinking this must be a temporary glitch but I would hate to lose all of these channels. If you have the Sirius/ XM radio app, would you please check this on your Droid?
I just installed the 2.2 update on my Incredible. Don't know if it's me but it seems a tad bit slower than the last OS. I'm also noticing on my Advance Task Killer that I have Skype, Amazon MP3, Slacker, Kik, and other applications open most of the time without even touching the apps. Also pressing KILL all applications does not do the job! I gotta hold the application and press force stop myself.
Also earlier today I noticed I got incoming and missed calls from people in my phonebook, but when checking my call logs, it doesnt show their name it just the number and thats it.
So if anyone else is experiencing this please or has a solution to this please reply back.
I currently have code that creates rows in a table that hold a string in column 1 with a RadioButton in column 2. There can be a variable number of these rows so I cannot just create it in the layout xml as radio1, radio2, etc. My code displays the table with the string and RadioButton pairs just great, but I want to add them to a RadioGroup so only one button can be toggled at a time.

Android supports recording from the mic to amr format in the 3gp container. On the upcoming HTC Desire or even current HTC Desire, suppose I'm listening to the lovely built in FM radio and I want to make a recording of a breakfast show; would that be possible? Is there a possiblity for an app to be created that could record the built in radio in this manner? What about recording in a better quality like mp3? Does Android need to provide API access to the output speakers or... I am not reffering to internet/streaming radio, this is about the built in FM radio found in the latest HTC smartphones.
Depends on the size and gauge of the wire of your headphones. Also depends on the position of the wires. FM radio is a little picky, but works fine- depending on the points mentioned. Old & wrong: The FM radio on the Inc must be the weakest radio in a phone, evah! Just tried it today and picks up half the channels my Ngage and N900 pick up well. A lot of channels barely come in, or are static filled. I thought Steely Dan said "FM has no static at all"? Makes the CDMA radio seem not that bad, in comparison I know- at LEAST it has a radio. Must be set to suppa powwa savva mode
Last night I noticed that there is an update to Slacker, so I downloaded it to my Incredible. Opened it to see if there were any visible differences, went to a station and played a song for 2 seconds, selected quit via the menu, and then "shutdown slacker" at the end. This morning I open up Spare Parts, check the battery history/partial wake usage, and Slacker is at the top, bar all the way to the right.
I am wanting to allow the user of my android application the ability to set some parameters. The radio button is ideal for this situation. However, I don't like the radio buttons are rendered. Is it possible to change the radio button icon? For example, is it possible to create a custom layout for each row and in that layout reference my own icon and change the font et al.
From the JavaDoc, it said it returns 'a bitmap representing this view or null if cache is disabled'. My question is what if the View is longer than the phone screen (you need to scroll vertically), what does the bitmap return? * only the visible portion of the view * everything the view has (both visible + invisible part)
My app is downloading a file that does not need to be kept. So I was trying to put it in the directory returned by Environment.getDownloadCacheDirectory() (that returns "/cache"). But apparently it is not accessible, (a FileNotFoundException is thrown).
